Chapter 7: On A Beach At Dusk

Chapter Text

The first thing you hear when you awaken is the sound of the sea. When was the last time you heard the sea? You couldn’t remember that.

You couldn’t remember anything.

“I--I can’t--”

You weakly open your eyes, forcing yourself to look at what’s below you. Paws, blue paws.

Those have always been there, right?

A labored breath passes through your muzzle, your chest heaving up and down. It hurt to breathe, hurt to think.

You close your eyes for a minute, you have to think. How did you get here? What happened? Why can’t you remember anything? It was hard to think, but you had to. It’s the only thing you can do right now.

What was your name? Could you even remember that much?

Think. Think! What’s in a name?

A labored breath passes through your muzzle again. At least it hurts less this time.

Slowly, you open one eye, the blush pinks of the sunset clouds visible, if not blurry and bleary. Sunset on the beach, how lovely. You would probably think that some other time, but this time, this time you don’t know what to think.

“Where… am I?”

You barely manage to get the words out, but you get them out all the same. It’s a small victory, you suppose. You push your body up underneath you, the heaviness you recognize as wetness and tiredness. Did you tumble into the ocean? How had you gotten there in the first place?

You push yourself to sit properly, staring at the waves. Something about it scares you, each one dragging sand out to sea. So strong and deadly, yet peaceful looking. They consume with no end, an ever-continuing cycle caused by the moon, consuming without remorse.

You drag your body back from the edge of the water, noting the coolness reaching your feet. It would be cold before too long, but you were too tired to move more than this. You would get sick, most likely, frostbite if it got too cold, especially since you had no way to dry yourself.

Your eyes flicker up, catching the sun beyond the horizon now. Bubbles floating through the air, maybe someone was playing nearby or it was a strange phenomenon found only on this beach. It added to the peaceful air, a distraction from the now rising tide lapping again at your feet.

Away from the water, away.

You force your body to push away from the water again, dragging your tail underneath you. A tail? Had it always been there? Well, it was uncomfortable to sit on under your damp and heavy body, but you don’t want to move again.

You huff air, deciding to just give up and fall on your back. You stare at the pink and orange sky, knowing the darkness come soon.

Sunset on the beach, that’s nice.
