Work Text:

Steve was beyond excited for today.

He couldn't help but read over his to-do list for the day once again, the feeling of giddiness rising up and almost overflowing.

Today was Tony's birthday; his first one since they started dating, and Steve was determined to make it the best birthday ever.

Everything was all set up perfectly. Pepper was distracting Tony with a bunch of meetings, and once they're over Tony was to come to the penthouse where they'll meet up and head over to their dinner reservations together.

Steve even managed to recruit Natasha into the party planning festivities and while they were having dinner she was to decorate the penthouse and get everything ready for when they came home.

Then they were going to have an easy-going surprise party with all of the Avengers and some cake.

Nothing too big or extravagant, just something sweet and intimate with all of their friends. Something that Steve desperately felt Tony needed. Something just for him and not a big show all for others.

He seriously couldn't wait.

Which was why when Steve's phone began to ring, and he saw that it was Tony who was calling, Steve didn't even feel ashamed to pick up right after the first ring.

"Hey, Baby, how did the meeting go?" Steve asked, his smile growing more and more just thinking about Tony coming home soon.

"I want to stab everyone." Was all Tony responded with, making Steve snort.

"That bad, huh?"

"Yes! All the board members are acting like imbeciles and like they've never ran a company before. It looks like our meeting is going to go on longer than expected." Tony sighs. Steve could practically hear how stressed Tony was.

"Well, that's alright. We'll just meet at the restaurant, then instead. Just make sure you don't get blood on your suit, and remember the reservations are at seven, okay?" Steve asks, trying to keep his disappointment out of his voice. It's not completely ruining their plans, they can still make their reservations and have a great night together.

"I love you for enabling me," Tony says, sounding a bit lighter when he did so.

"I love you too," Steve responds before ending the call.

It was all going to be alright, Steve tells himself, their plans could still happen. Their night isn't ruined yet.

Okay, so their night may be ruined now.

It was currently nine and there still was no sign of Tony.

Steve really didn't know how much longer he could wait in the restaurant before they kicked him out. They were already beginning to close.

Sparing his phone once last glance, Steve saw that his texts and calls were still left unanswered and accepted his fate. Their night was officially ruined.

While Steve made his way out to the car, he began to get into contact with JARVIS, figuring he should have the AI let everyone know that the party was no longer happening; and also to quell a bit of his worry and see if Tony had just forgotten about their reservations and went straight home.

"Hey, JARVIS, did Tony come home?"

'My scans show that Sir is still in his office at Stark Industries.'

At least that got rid of the anxiety of whether or not Tony got kidnapped.

"Alright, let everyone know that we're probably going to have to postpone the part until tomorrow. Don't go into full details, just let them know that something came up." Steve instructs, rubbing his face frustratedly before pulling out of the parking lot and beginning his drive to the tower.

The whole drive there, Steve couldn't help but frown. He was so excited to be able to spend his boyfriend's birthday with him, he couldn't understand why Tony didn't even bother showing up to their reservations.

It was obvious that Steve had stuff planned for his birthday, did he not want to celebrate it with him? If so, Tony should have said something sooner, Steve would have kept it a lot more low-key and kept it to just the both of them.

Hopefully, all my questions will be answered, Steve thought as he gently knocked on Tony's office door.

"Hey, Tones, it's just me," Steve calls out as he walks into the office.

"Hey, Steve, just let finish looking over this last page here, and then we can head out to dinner," Tony mumbles, not even bothering to look up from the stack of papers in front of him.

"Tony, our dinner reservations were two hours ago," Steve informs, effectively getting Tony to look up and look over at the clock he had sitting on his desk.

"Oh shit," Tony breathed out when he saw that Steve was telling the truth. "I'm sorry, Honey, I got so wound up with these contracts - which are a complete mess by the way - that I completely lost track of time. Can we do a rain check on date night? I promise I'll make it up to you." Which... was not a response Steve was expecting. Date night?

"Tony, do you even know what today it is?" That question made Tony stiffen up.

"Uhh," Tony so very eloquently said, whipping around and glancing out the window really quick before facing Steve once again. "I know it's not our anniversary because there's no snow outside, and I know it's not your birthday because there are no fireworks, so... nothing too important that can't be forgiven?" Tony replies, forming the last bit of the answer into a sheepish question; hoping to get extra brownie points for cuteness.

Steve just stood there for a bit in complete awe.

Was Tony being serious right now? Did he seriously not know what today was? Steve knew the scientist was horrible with dates, but he couldn't be this bad, right? Right?

"You're right, it's not my birthday today because it's your birthday today," Steve tells Tony, making him scoff.

"It's not my birthday today, Steve, don't be ridiculous."

"Tony. It is your birthday today." Steve insists.

"It's not my birthday."

"It definitely is your birthday."

"Give me a calendar then," Tony continues to argue, making Steve roll his eyes and pull out the calendar on his phone. "It's not my birthday and I will prove it to- oh. Never mind. Happy birthday to me."

Steve couldn't help but laugh at the ridiculousness of it all, his disappointment and sadness quickly being replaced by amusement.

"Tony!" Steve incredulously shouted once he caught his breath.

"What?"

"I knew you were horrible at remembering things, but come on! You're own birthday?" Steve scoffs in disbelief.

"You didn't have a whole day planned, did you?" Tony remorsefully asks, the guilt clear in his eyes.

"Just a bit, yeah."

"Oh, Babe, I'm so sorry."

"It's fine! It's nothing that we can't postpone until tomorrow. You just have to pretend to be surprised when I take you to your party." Steve says, finally walking around the desk and pulling Tony into his arms.

"Besides, your birthday isn't over yet. I can think of a few things we can still do to celebrate." Steve smirks.

"Does it involve having a whole cake to ourselves?" Tony hopefully asks.

"Something like that," Steve replies, his giddiness once again returning when he saw Tony's excitement.

"Already the best birthday ever," Tony says, planting a kiss on Steve's cheek and practically running out of his office.

"Yeah. Best birthday ever."

Notes:

IMPORTANT:
Also, you may notice that comments are now turned off for guests. That's because, on my last couple of fics, I have been getting nothing but hate comments about how awful my writing is, and I even got one comment telling me to stop writing altogether, all of them coming from guests and anons. It got seriously discouraging and I honestly considered quitting completely. Instead, I had some great friends talk me through it and I've just decided to continue doing what I love and as a screw it to the people who are hiding behind a computer screen to be mean. I love writing and I love hearing everyone's feedback but it just got to be too draining having all of these guests tell me I suck.
