Summary
James never made it as far as Stuyvesant Heights when he reached the twin villages of Bedford & Stuyvesant that harsh and hurried night on horseback in the driving snow all the way up from London. Clint’s mother, Edith, Lady Barton rode out in her fur-lined cloak to greet him as the moon rose and snow continued to blanket the countryside without ceasing. James would lose the road soon, he feared.
Damn and blast, he despised this whole shitty season.
“I’m just on my way into the village to see the wise woman,” the lady confided to James by way of greeting. “I’m glad you’ve finally come, James Barnes, before my lord Earl foolishly recovers and restarts this whole disagreement over again.” She sighed, sounding a hundred plus her years.
“What’s happened? Do you need help, Lady Edith? If it is in my power to give it, I offer any help you need,” James swore.
“Marry my younger son, Lord Barnes,” she demanded bluntly. “Offer for him with all possible haste before his father or brother are given charge somehow over the Bronx estates.”
