Friend Don’t

Chapter 15: Reflection

Chapter Text

Kelly was sitting in the waiting room of Chicago med waiting for news on how Alexandra was doing. When him and Jay arrived they rushed her in and Will Halstead and Connor Rhodes took over. They were then pushed out of the room.

Jay was standing by the window looking out at the rain that began to pour when they arrived. All he kept thinking was how didn't he notice before? The signs were all there when he thought back.

Him yelling at her the other day probably didn't help matters. She was already slipping and that may of push her over the edge. Jay rammed his fist into the glass window, pissed at himself.

The sound got everyone else's attention and they all looked over at Jay. A man who is usually strong and never cracks had a few tears falling from his eyes.

Kelly sigh but got up and walked over to Jay. "Hey Man."

"hey." Jay didn't even bother to look at Kelly.

"She'll be alright. Alex is a fighter." Kelly didn't know if he was saying this to comfort Jay or himself.

Jay's head snapped towards Kelly. "You don't know that Severide." The words rolled off his tongue with venom.

Kelly was a little taken aback by Jay's tone. "You're right. But if I don't try and have some hope I will crumble. Alex has been my best friend since we were kids. I've been her protector since her father passed away."

Jay scuffled. "Some protector you."

"Excuse me?" Kelly had rolled his hands up into a fist.

"You heard me. She told me everything. How she confused her love for you before she left. How you brushed her off as just a friend. And then you have the nerve to confess you screwed up after all this time. After she endured abuse at the hands of man he claimed to love her. And now we are here and she may be dead! This is on you Severide!"

Kelly snapped. He swamy back and knocked Jay right across his jaw. Jay stumbled back into the window but then came back swinging.

When 51 saw the two exchanging punches they jumped up to pull the two apart. Casey and Cruz grabbed Kelly while Capp and Tony grabbed Jay.

Hermann stood between the two of them. "Enough!!" both men stopped struggling against being help back. "This is no one's fault!" Hermann turned to face Jay. "And how dare you have the balls to try and blame Severide, Jay?"

Jay stood there silent and frozen.

"And Severide." Hermann turned towards him. "Don't think this is your fault. Yeah you did something stupid but you apologized! Alexandra is clearly hurting and all any of us can do for her now is to be there for her."

Jay sighed. "If she makes it."

Hermann snapped back around to Jay with a pointed finger. "Do not think like that! Not till we know for sure she is gone. She is my niece and she is all I have left of my brother. Keep the faith till we know."

The sliding doors to the outside came open and in walked Cindy and the kids. Hermann went over to his crying wife and hugged her.

After sitting in the waiting room for 45 minutes Dr. Halstead and Dr. Rhodes came out of the ED. "Jay. Kelly."

The two men walked over to the two doctors both of them bracing themselves. "Tell me she is okay, please Will." Kelly begged as his heart was breaking.

"We managed to get her stable. But she lost a lot of blood so she is still unconscious. We honestly do not know how she is alive."

"What are her chances of pulling through?"

"I wish I could give you an answer Jay but we are surprised her heart is still beating. She is receiving blood transfusions and we have stitched up her wrists."

"Can we see her?" Kelly managed to choke out.

"Yes but please only a couple people at a time."  Dr. Halstead and Dr. Rhodes headed back into the ED.

"Severide go. You should have a moment to yourself with her."

"Thanks Hermann." Kelly headed back to where Alex was. When he pulled the door open he saw her body laying there completely still. Her skin was same color as the pure white hospital sheets.

Kelly closed the door and took a seat next to Alex's bed. He then proceeded to take one of her cold hands. When he looked down he could see the stitches on her wrist and he just crumbled.

"I'm so sorry Lex." Kelly cried and laid his head down on her bed. "I should of went after you when you left. I should of told you how much I loved you that night you came into my room."

"Please Lex wake up. Please be okay. I already lost Shay and that almost destroyed me. I don't know what will happen if I lose you too."

Kelly had been with Alex for a little while when Sharon Goodwin walked out into the waiting room. She strolled over to Jay and Hermann.

"Christopher?"

"Hey Sharon. Is everything okay?"

she shifted uncomfortably. "Can we talk?"

"Yeah sure." Hermann handed their daughter over to his wife and went to follow Ms. Goodwin.

She had only taken a couple steps before stopping to turn around again. "Jay it maybe a good idea for you to join as well."

Jay nodded his head and followed Hermann and Goodwin into the ED. She led them into one of side conference rooms and closed the door.

"What's going on Sharon?"

“We have a slight problem.” The two men looked at her waiting for her to continue. “Alex never changed her emergency contact.”

Jay knew immediately where this was going but Hermann was still clueless. “Who is it?”

“Mason.”
