Work Text:
It was a relaxing day for us. We had just finished a hangout at Toriel’s with mostly everyone present. Alphys, Undyne and Frisk were playing a card game but swapped the cards for anime collector cards and each tried to provide a reason why their character would definitely beat the others in a certain contest. Mettaton was excitedly telling Papyrus about his latest shows and all the press that came with it, with Papy listening intently to every word as well as encouraging Mettaton when he deemed necessary to. Toriel was in the kitchen preparing dessert for everyone with her and Sans punning like no tomorrow, while I decided to relax on the couch with Napstablook, listening to his newest music and just enjoying having everyone nearby. It was so nice and something we hadn’t been able to do in a while, mostly to everyone’s schedule not lining up properly. But it was fun! I was thankful though when Sans, Papyrus and I were heading home though, looking forward to just relaxing with my favorite skele-bae on the couch and enjoy the rest of a great day. Paps already headed upstairs to his room, with an exclamation of needing to redo his action figure collection and that left Sans and I in the living room. I flopped down on the couch face first, letting out an exhausted groan that turned into a small shriek as Sans decided to lay on top of me without warning.
“Hey, even if you are just bones, you’re still kinda heavy”, came my muffled complained which seemed to amuse him.
“hmm nah, i think i will stay right where i am. ‘sides it’s comfy” He made a point to lightly wiggle on top of me, which caused me to let out a mix between a groan and a giggle. The nice moment was broken when I heard my cellphone ring. Sans noticed as well and mercifully allowed me to get up to go get it, sprawling out on the couch now that it was empty. I stuck out my tongue out at him as I answered my phone.
“Hello?”
“Sweetie, it’s me dad.” I blinked in surprise, not having heard from my parents in a while but not annoyed by the call at all. I smiled as I subconsciously started to pace away from the couch towards the kitchen.
“Oh hey dad. What’s up? Is everything alright?”
“It’s your mom sweetie. She had to be brought to the hospital.” I felt my body freeze, my soul letting out an uncomfortable thump in my chest. I felt Sans’ eyes looking curiously over at me but I couldn’t bring it in myself to look back over to him.
“W-what happened? Is she okay?!”
“They don’t know for sure yet. She is still doing some tests but…I don’t know. She was complaining about having troubles with her heart while sleeping and always feeling her heartbeat wildly in her chest. If you want to come over, you can see her. Her room is 23 in the west wing of Ebott Hospital.” I gulped and shakily nodded before murmuring quietly that I would be there soon.
I was snapped out of my daze at feeling a boney finger gently brush some tears away that I wasn’t aware were running down my cheeks. I looked into the concerned eye lights of my boyfriend and let out a small sob before he pulled me into a hug. I felt his fingers gently run through my hair as he let me cry for a bit before gently making me face him.
“what’s wrong angel?”
“It’s my mom. She had to go to the hospital, she was having heart problems. D-do you think we c-could…” I hiccupped and looked at him with big teary eyes. His eye lights lightly shrunk with my explanation before nodding. “yeah, sure thing. just let me tell paps real quick that we’ll be out and we can pop right over, that okay with you?” I nodded and let go of him to see him shortcut into Paps room. I took a shaky breath while waiting for him as I tried to see if I need to bring anything with me. I couldn’t think of anything directly, so I just sat down for a moment to wait for my boyfriend, trying to gather my thoughts.
He appeared a few minutes later, looking pained to see me so broken. He gently gathered me in his arms and shortcut us over to the hospital near my mother’s room when I told him where she was staying. We immediately spot my dad, going over to him so he could give us the full update as well as anything that the doctors told him. Sans held me close the entire time as I lightly shook and tried to not have a breakdown, I felt his comforting warmth as he gently rubbed my back and my muscles seemed to slowly loosen. It took a few hours, my best boyfriend in the entire world having made sure that I was comforted, had something to eat and also coming up with terrible hospital puns to make me smile again to forget the anxiety of having to wait.
“you know it really takes some guts to be an organ donor.”
“two surgeons were laughing so much, they had each other in stitches.”
“what do you call a fish with a medical degree? a sturgeon”
“good thing i’m a skeleton, otherwise these medical puns would make me sick.”
“i don’t need to be a doctor to know that we be-lung together”
He said the last one with a soft smile, his eye lights softened at seeing me relaxed and slightly winded from having a small giggle fit from all the puns. I leaned my head against his shoulder with a happy sigh. “Thank you, I really needed that.”
“no skin of my back. you know i’m always there for you” I chuckled and looked at him.
“Yeah you are. That’s why I love you a skele-ton, bad puns and all” I snickered as he lightly started to blush and his eyes shifted to small hearts, gently nudging my side. I was about to tease him further when a doctor came up to us to inform us of the status of my mother. She was thankfully doing okay and it was nothing too serious, though they were gonna keep her for a few more days just to be careful. As we were all in her room, talking to her and having lighthearted conversation, I leaned against my boyfriend and felt him pull me closer, knowing that he would always be there for me no matter what, and for that I was really grateful.
