“Just give me a sec,” Husk promised gently, nudging Angel towards the room’s center and then left to some far corner. Only the swish of his massive wings and the vague glowing amber of his cat’s eyes in the purple-black darkness betrayed his location.
Angel rubbed his arms and crossed the lower ones, feeling nervous but forcing himself to take a breath. This was Husk, he reminded himself. Husk who would never hurt him or lure him into a false sense of security only to spring a trap. But Angel had been burned too many times before, and such instincts were hard to shake. Anxiety swirled like bile in his gut: his shoulders started to tremble and he could hear his heart pounding but not in a pleasant way. His long fingers spread and curled into his fists and just as he was about to turn on his heels and run, a swish of air and a warm cloak of feathers settled over his shoulders, warming him instantly.
“Hey,” Husk’s rich, rasp, low and comforting, grounded him and he looked down and found amber eyes smiling reassuringly. “I’m right here.”
Mollified, Angel allowed himself to relax and nodded, his smile small but trusting. “So what did ya want to show me?” He lowered his eyes seductively, the tone coquettish.
Taking that as a sign the spider was feeling better, Husk smirked, revealing a cheshire cat’s smile of glowing golden teeth. With a magician's flare, he pulled away his opposite wing and revealed the object with a curl of his wrist, claws and fist unfurled.
At first glance, Angel mistook the revealed item for a snowglobe: spherical in shape as it was with a flat rounded base and some lovely image inside. But illuminating this one was a beautiful oceanic glow and inside the glass prism was not a stagnant image surrounded by falling glitter but a full underwater scene: countless colorful fish swimming about a coral reef before venturing into deeper water among sharks and sea turtles and even an octopus! The best comparison Angel could make was like watching some kind of live camera of a topside ocean on a three-dimensional sphere-shaped TV. In the darkness of the room, the pretty blue glow illuminated them both.
