Enji Todoroki slammed his fists on his desk in anger, making Toya flinch. Even after all these years his dad still resorted to the physical when it came to letting out his anger. In this case, though, Toya could relate. They were both fuming at the computer screen, on which his father had pulled up a front page article on a gossip magazine. The problem was, Toyas father was angry for a totally different reason than he was.
“...irresponsible and completely arrogant!” Endeavor yelled. Toya winced, knowing how thin the walls of his fathers office were. He had no doubt that everyone at the agency could hear him even if they weren’t loitering outside the door and eavesdropping. “I thought you were better than this, Toya. I expected more from you.”
That wasn’t new. At the age of 22 Toya was used to having “more” expected of him. His placement in the sports festival wasn't good enough even though he got second. His performance in training needed to be better even though he had pushed himself until he was throwing up. Even his fucking hero rank needed to be hire despite being placed in 4th. To make it within the top five heroes before the age of 25 was a huge deal. Not that Toya cared most of the time. Even when his father lectured him about his “slacking off” he could never find it in himself to care about his rank over the safety of civilians.
But now Toya wished they were discussing any one of the above topics instead of the magazine article on his father’s computer screen.
Pro Hero Dabi's Heated Night With His Rival
In hindsight, it was Toyas fault. He should have expected to be followed by some kind of crazed fan or a desperate paparazzi photographer looking for any sliver of a story. He’d been dealing with this kind of thing since his first sports festival at UA. And now that he was in the top five, fans had only gotten more and more stalkerish. Finding creative ways to pry into Toyas life and exposing every little thing they came across (conveniently never anything about his fathers abusive tendencies). And especially when the two youngest top ten heroes were seen working with each other for the first time since this years hero rankings (in which "Pro Hero Hawks brutally overtook Dabis scoring in a landslide of points, swiftly stealing his third place spot", or so the article said). So no, it was not a surprise a photographer had followed them that night, especially when he and Hawks had been seen leaving the scene of their villain fight together.
But the only thing that had been on his mind at the time was the blond winged beauty, who Toya may or may not have had a crush on since his debut two years before, that had been flirting with him the entire night.
It was almost impressive how the magazine was able to identify him from such a grainy picture. The photo at the top of the magazine article was, fortunately, blurry. There wasn't much to be seen from the figures making out but the clothes on the floor were clear enough that people got the gist. Taken through the balcony window of Toyas penthouse apartment, the two young men could be seen laying on the living room couch in a very compromising position.
It had only been just a few days ago, but Toya could still feel the ghost of Keigos fingertips on his skin, and his lips on Toyas throat. It was the first time someone had touched him without the intention of hurting him.
Toya hadn’t once thought to close the curtains.
His dad was still shouting despite Toyas small daydream. The flames on his face growing brighter in his anger, heating up the room. A small whirring sound came from the computer at the back of Toyas compression shirt, telling him it had gotten hot enough for the coolant to be released within the fabric of his hero costume “...many great women for you to choose from! But instead you go behind my back to sleep with this...this... man ?!”
Now it was Toyas turn to get angry, but he shoved it down. If he argued back his father would just go off more. The last thing he wanted was to make this meeting longer than it already was. His father never thought rationally when angry (or really at all) and interrupting with his own opinion would only drag this meeting out.
“Disgraceful!” If Endeavor had seen Toyas reactions to his insults, he didn’t show it. “A gay man?! How disgusting! And the one that took your rank, too! I thought I raised you better than that-“
Toya has to bite his tongue to keep from lashing out at his father. What was disgusting was the older generation still believing the world lived in the dark ages. This was the 22nd century where people were actually allowed to love who they wanted instead of being forced into arranged marriages.
Unfortunately all his father saw was a queer enemy with a powerful quirk and a higher score in the hero rankings that Toya needed to crush. This was one of the many times Toya wished he was stronger. Maybe he could have actually stood up to his father. Instead he was once again sitting here and taking this shit.
He couldn’t imagine Hawk’s punishment would be any better. The Commission had a tendency to discriminate against heroes in the lgbtq community. Never outright of course. They wanted the civilians to think they were truly on the side of human rights. But they were able to hide way more stuff than a few homophobic agents, so lying to the public was easy for them. Once the commission saw this, Keigo would be in a world of trouble.
Something in his gut churned at the thought. Why was Toya sitting here listening to another lecture about his father’s disappointment when he should be handling this with his boyfriend?
Deciding not to analyze the fact that he had just thought of Keigo as his boyfriend , Toya got to his feet. His father probably called his name a few times but Toya wasn’t listening. His only focus was on getting to Keigo's apartment and holding the birdbrain in his arms.
A hand grabbed his bicep just as he was walking out the door of the office. It was only a testament to how angry Toya was that he didn’t flinch at the sudden strong, heated grip around his bicep.
“Don’t you dare walk away from me!” His father was fuming, but Toya had had enough. He had endured years of Endeavors horrible parenting. The man knew better to hit him in the middle of his agency where many sidekicks and secretaries were working. “You will stay here while I fix the mess you made-“
“Shut up.” The words were dangerous and cold, backed up by a growl of anger and warning. It took Toya a few seconds to realize the words had come from him. But judging from the shock in his father’s eyes, it was definitely his mouth that had spoken.
While his father was still surprised, Toya yanked his arm out of the larger man's grasp and turned to march out of the building.
“Toya!” Endeavor yelled as he walked away. All eyes in the building turned to the scene but Toya kept his gaze on the large doors in the front of the building. “Don’t you dare! If you walk out that door you are fired! You will never have the backup of the Endeavor agency again!!”
The only response Toya gave was a not so nice hand gesture over his shoulder as he opened the doors and walked out of the building.
