Work Text:
Rex shivered, awful memories replying in his mind or repeat, like a broken record jumping on the same ten seconds of music. Only this music was anything but calming. It sounded like all the worst sounds one could find, recorded and combined, screaming and echoing in Rex's skull.
A soft sob came from his clenched teeth, the pressure in his skull unbearable as Rex sank further into the dark corners that the closet covered him in, like a warm embrace of a non-judgmental person offering comfort. Rex wanted that, he wanted someone to hold him, ground him into reality. But no one is there.
Another sob escaped, lingering in his mouth for a bit, like the awful aftertaste of cheep booze. The ringing and screeching became louder, and even though Rex knew it is all in his head, he didn't have the will in himself to stop his hands from pressing hard against his skull in an effort to keep the screeching from filling his mind. The only thing it did however, is create more pressure, in turn causing Rex to start getting a headache.
Rex shook as a tear slipped down, falling into the darkness, unseen. It felt nice being alone like this, crying away his problems. Though his problems most consistent around him being terribly alone, so alone in fact that he hugs the jackets in the closet to pretend it's a person's touch.
More tears fell, accompanied by a sob. He's alone, no one cares about him. He should just fade away and join the dust that's already gathered in the old closet from the many years of disuse. At least there he would feel at home.
Somewhere between the sobs, tears and headache, he curled up into a ball, hugging his legs to his chest. He grit his teeth in an effort to choke back the sounds, and somewhat succeeded.
The closet door creaked as it opened, and a tall skeleton loomed in the door. Rex flinched, his body freezing up. Memories of his brother finding him like this, and abusing him even more had him cowering in fear, scurrying to the furthest corner.
He waited, for shouting, Screaming, complaining, anything- instead, the skeleton crawled into the closet with him, sitting down against the back off the wall. They kept their distance however, somehow managing to make their body look small as they curled in on themselves.
“Rex...? Are You Alright...?„ their soft voice, like the gentle breaking of waves on shore, is what bout Rex back to more of his senses. He shook, trying to dry his tears and hide from their view.
“'s f-fine- I'm f-fine-„ maybe if he could make it convincing enough, he could believe it himself.
“Rex, We Both Know That's Not The Truth...„ they stayed there, not wanting to do something that could trigger a worse attack from Rex.
Rex on the other hand, needed their touch, their voice to keep them away from the noise in his skull, to keep him from the urge of killing himself. So he did the only thing that he could think off, crawling over to them and clung to them as he sobbed.
They didn't hit him, or yell at him, or even tell him how weak, pathetic and useless he is. Their arms wrapped around his small frame, humming a soft tune as one hand traced circles on Rex's back. They cradled him gently, as if he were made of porcelain. Porcelain that had fallen and broke many times, but got picked up and stickied together again, leaving many ugly crack marks. Rex isn't even sure if he could be properly fixed anymore.
“Penny For Your Thoughts...?„ Their voice sang like soft chimes in the wind, calming Rex to a degree.
“I-I j-just... feel like I-I'm a b-burden to ya 'n- t-tha' n-nothin' will e-ever get better 'n-„ Rex got cut off by a finger gently being held to his mouth, a soft shushing sound coming from the other.
“Do Not Ever Think You Are A Burden To Me. And I Promise You, Things Will Get Better. If They Don't Get Better, Then I Will Put A Band-Aid On Then So They Can Get Better!„ they smiled brightly, followed with a "Neh Heh!" at their own joke.
Rex smiled, then snorted, even through the tears. He hugged them close, smiling more as the screaming in his head subsided.
“thanks, Pyrus.”
“Anytime, Rex.„ with a soft kiss to his forehead, he drifted off into sleep in their arms. He doesn't care that they're still in the closet, hell, they could be anywhere in the world or multiverse, but so long as he has them by his side, he's never felt more at home, at peace with himself.
“I Love You, Rex.”
Rex fell asleep with the gentle words echoing in his mind.
