Britta slumps down on the bench she’s sitting on, crossing her arms over her chest with a dramatic pout, when suddenly a voice appears next to her.
“Is this seat taken?” Annie inquires, giving Britta a quizzical grin. Instead of responding verbally, Britta simply scoots over; it takes Annie a moment, but she takes the hint eventually.
“What do you want?” Britta’s tone is harsher than she intends, so she tacks on a quiet apology.
Annie sways with her hands clasp behind her back. Britta assumes she’s supposed to guess, though she’s worried she’s going to accidentally make a fool of herself by raising her voice at Annie again, and Annie doesn’t deserve Britta at her worst—no, scratch that, Britta isn’t good enough for Annie at her best either.
“I have a surprise,” Annie confesses following a few awkward moments of silence, shimmying her shoulders while Britta straightens her back the slightest bit and relaxes her unknowingly tense upper body.
From behind herself, Annie pulls out two teddy bears. The stuffed animals (or stuffies, as Annie calls them) are both 14 inches tall, one in bubblegum pink and the other in cyan.
Britta smiles widely, lightly tapping her fists together in excitement, “Which one do you want?” Annie asks. Britta plucks the cyan plush out of Annie’s hands and holds it up to her chest.
“Thank you, Annie,” Britta clears her throat, “You always know exactly what I need.” Annie smiles this time, twirling a strand of hair flirtatiously.
