Work Text:
It was Lisa's birthday soon. It had been years since the last time they celebrated one of their birthdays together. Only after forming Roselia and realising how important Lisa was to her, it would be impossible for Yukina to do nothing for her.
Shopping was not one of her strong points, but she was willing to stick with it to find something worthy of Lisa. She had already gone through several shops that felt like the same kind Lisa would like but none of them were satisfactory in her search. She was ready to head out the shopping mall to try and find something in shopping streets instead but something caught her eye. That’s it. That’s exactly what she needed.
A week later, the bright smile on Lisa’s face when she looked at the rhodonite pendant was proof that she was right. Yukina was happy to help her put it on. The bright red reminded her of Lisa.
-
For their first anniversary, Yukina almost forgot to buy Lisa a gift. Everyday is enough to remind Yukina of how lucky she is to be by Lisa's side. She still managed to buy a small red wristband on the way back home. Lisa was with her though, so it wasn't much of a surprise when she even guided her choice. It was only fair since Yukina actually chose what new pastry Lisa could try to make for them. They didn’t do much more than being together that day. This was more than enough.
-
Yukina immediately noticed the red nail polish she bought a few months before Future World Fes on Lisa's hands. It took long for her to finally be able to wear it without worrying about how it would chip away with their daily practice. Yukina made sure to cherish the view and grabbed Lisa’s hand.
-
Yukina thought it would be harder for her to find the perfect ring for Lisa. She even had Roselia’s members go with her to go from jewelry shops to jewelry shops. Obviously, it indirectly brought Hazawa-san to her hunting group. It meant more Afterglow members by extension as well. They also ran into a few other former classmates while walking through the city. They sure made a loud group now that each shop had to put up with but it didn’t bother Yukina. When she’d see the right ring she would know.
When walking for their next destination, after an eventful lunch, that’s when she saw it. A silver ring with uneven pieces of red stones spread around it. Just imagining it on Lisa's hand made her smile. Ako was cheering so much when Yukina was paying for the ring that Sayo took her out of the shop herself, Rinko looking at them with a small smile. Everyone was now sitting in a park and looking at Yukina, full of excitement.
“So, when are you going to propose ?” Kasumi's body was shaking in anticipation.
“Tonight.”
Numerous stares turned her way.
“SO SOON ?”
“WHAT ?”
And other exclamations came from everyone. Some of genuine delight, others seemed more apprehensive.
“That’s when I'll see her next.” It seemed logical enough for Yukina. There was no point in waiting now that she knew what she wanted.
“You have nothing planned.” Sayo said. Her eyes could almost look dejected but it’s as if she had expected this outcome.
“Should I have?”
More exclamations but Yukina heard how Sayo sighed into her hands and Hazawa-san was patting her back in a comforting manner.
Sayo shook her head and looked up at Yukina, “Imai-san will love it anyway, I’m sure.”
“Oh, Yukina ? And… everyone ?”
Lisa stood in front of them. That’s right, this park wasn’t far away from a station that could bring them to Yukina and Lisa’s place easily. Seeing the grocery bags that Lisa had, this seemed to be her plan at the moment. Yukina also had a plan, no matter what Sayo had said.
“Lisa.” Yukina said, a bit louder than she would have usually. She walked up to a still very confused Lisa and got down on one knee.
“Yu-Yukina ?!”
“Lisa. You’ve always been by my side, even when I thought I wouldn’t need you. I realised how important you are to me, too late I think, but now I am certain. I want to continue on this path with you by my side and hopefully not only as my best friend, girlfriend and partner, but also as my wife.“ Lisa was looking at her in startled silence, tears clear in her eyes. Yukina’s stomach growled. Ah yes, it was starting to be quite late. “And I’m hungry, what are we having for dinner tonight ?”
Lisa fell to her knees, her bags completely forgotten, and crushed Yukina in a hug, “Omelette and miso soup.” Her voice was teary but Yukina knew for a long time now when her tears were happy tears.
“And of course. Of course I will.”
Loud cheers erupted from their friends, maybe from some bystanders too, Yukina wasn't sure anymore as she held onto Lisa.
“Oh my god, she forgot the ring.” Sayo’s voice cut through the cheers. Yukina would concede to her that she truthfully didn’t have a plan. After going through her numerous pockets she finally got the box out. The ring shone as brightly as Lisa’s smile when she put it on her finger.
-
They both knew that Yukina could, at best, survive with how she could use her hands. She got better at helping a bit in the kitchen from living several years with Lisa now, at least. However, nothing more extraordinary than that. So it surprised them both when Yukina voiced out loud wanting to try out knitting after watching Lisa. She got to pick a dark red and soft yarn. Yukina heard a soft sigh from Lisa but when turning to her wife, she was smiling and was ready to guide her.
A week later, Lisa was happily strolling through the city covered in snow, a deep red scarf a bit too short and several weird knots across it around her neck.
-
“Sorry it’s taking so long, but this collection is way too cute !”
“It’s okay.” Yukina reassured Lisa. It still hasn’t beat their record of how long Lisa spent in one single shop and Yukina still had fun getting to witness Lisa creating so many outfits in so little time. As long as it wasn’t Yukina in the fitting room, it was fine.
“So ! Which one looks better, you think ?” Lisa asked as she got out of the fitting room. She had tried several flannels to tie around her waist to go with her shorts and this one was a dark blue. Yukina liked the way it flowed when Lisa moved but she had settled on her favorite already.
“I liked the red one.”
Lisa stopped in her tracks and Yukina saw a quick frown come and go as quickly as it came.
“No take backs ?” Lisa asked. Yukina shook her head. She was happy to see her choice tied around Lisa’s waist a few days later.
-
Never had Yukina been in so much of a moral conflict. This limited edition hoodie with the most intricate design of a pile of kittens sleeping on top of each other would be the only time in her life she could get her hands on it. Alas, the product had been a victim of its success and none of the darker colors were available anymore. Not even something coming close to purple, which was the only bright color that Yukina would allow in her closet. She couldn’t let it get away so easily. A particular color caught her eye however.
A single bright red hoodie was left. The image of a brightly smiling Lisa came to her mind. That’s it. Lisa could wear it when going outside, her wife had no problems wearing the brightest colors no matter when. Yukina could wear it at home, like the many other sweaters she either stole from or that Lisa forced upon her. She grabbed the piece of clothing, determined.
Lisa opened the package, curious, as there were no special occasions that she remembered worthy of being gifted something. The bright red color was the first thing Lisa got a glimpse of and paused for a moment. Yukina could swear she almost heard a sigh before she resumed her unpacking. The cat design was finally revealed.
“Right. A gift just for me.” Lisa chuckled and shot a knowing look back at Yukina before getting up and putting it on. The hoodie easily went past her knees. It really had been the last model available and hadn’t paid attention to sizing. Yukina didn’t regret her choice.
“It’s perfect.” Yukina said, her eyes shining brightly as she had a full display of the kittens. Before being engulfed right under the large hoodie.
“What am I going to do with you.” Lisa tried to sound exasperated but Yukina could hear her smile.
-
Roselia finally got a few months of hiatus after another successful tour. They loved all their friends dearly of course, but all of them wanted some time off with their spouses, understandably. Last time Lisa and Yukina had the chance to leave on vacation, Yukina chose a forest retreat that they had greatly enjoyed, so it was only fair that it would be Lisa’s turn to choose. That’s how they ended up in a calm beach town to enjoy the end of the summer. The weather was perfect for a dip in the water, which was the couple’s plan for the day.
“Oh no.”
“Lisa ?”
After a few more looks around their luggage, Lisa brought her hands to her face, “I forgot to bring my sunhat.”
“Oh no.”
“Yukina, can you be a loving and kind wife and go buy one for me while I finish packing our bag ?”
“Where ?”
“I saw a cute little shop just a few meters down the street. I don’t need anything fancy, I just want to cover my head, you know.”
Yukina nodded and prepared quickly for it. Lisa blew her a kiss and shouted a “Love you !” before she left. As soon as Yukina stepped out of their inn she saw the shop in question and headed for it. The old lady keeping the shop greeted her happily.
“Need anything in particular, young lady ?”
“Just a sunhat for my wife, please.”
The old lady nodded and led her to her sunhat collection. She much preferred buying things here already instead of a shopping mall where everywhere she stepped in they tried desperately to make her buy something.
True to Lisa's word, the hats were cute. Nothing too extravagant, but they would all perfectly suit her, like most things if she were honest. But one hat in particular caught her eye. The ribbon around it was a gentle red and a bunch of red hibiscus was adorning it. The old lady smiled in approval and Yukina happily returned to their room.
“Oh hey Yukina ! I’m ready to-” Lisa's greeting was cut short when she settled her eyes on the hat in Yukina’s hand. A frown clearly formed on her face.
“Lisa, what’s wrong ?”
Lisa looked up and waved her hand, “Nothing ! Nothing important anyway. Thank you ! Now we can-”
Yukina put out the hat out of her reach, with a bit of difficulty, and shook her head. “Nothing important still means there’s something.”
She saw Lisa’s face quickly going through a lot of expressions before she sat down on the bed with a sigh. She patted the space next to her and Yukina accepted the invitation to join her.
“It’s silly. But also not really. It is, mostly.”
Lisa let out a breath and looked right into her eyes.
“Yukina, look at me.”
“I am.”
“Look more closely. Can’t you see something ?”
Yukina looked. Lisa’s bright green eyes that could tend towards light brown, her silky hair, her long and rough hands that she loved to hold…
“You’re gorgeous.”
“Yukina. Stop being gay just for two seconds here, you wanted to talk about it.”
“Right.”
Yukina's eyes landed on her wedding ring. The red stones still shone as brightly as when she bought it. She noticed that Lisa also got the chance to put on the red nail polish she got her for their anniversary. She also wore the numerous red wristbands she bought her throughout the years, oh also her new red earrings, and these red shorts that Yukina helped her pick out in a shop and-
“You’re red.”
“Exactly.” Lisa sighed and managed to grab her new sunhat, the red hibiscus, barely standing out in the sea of red that was Lisa.
“I just… You know I like colors other than red, right ?”
Yukina stayed silent.
“Yukina.”
“I know. I was just remembering all the times I bought you something red.”
Lisa finally smiled, “Of course you were.” She grabbed her hand and led her to the door. Their bag was ready for their beach day and Lisa wanted to get to it now, it seemed.
“Just think about it now, please ? I love it all, I’m still wearing it. I just need a bit of something new sometimes.”
“But it fits you well.”
Lisa’s stare and the door closing a bit more forcefully than needed was enough for Yukina to get the message.
-
Lisa looked at the package, clear apprehension on her face. She eventually had to open it, it was the only gift left to be open. All the other ones were piled next to her, a few new novels and new cooking appliances to replace the old broken ones. She knew that the last one left had to be fashion related, Yukina always tried to balance it out that way.
The first layer was down and she found a simple white box. The brand spoke to her. It was a watch. That was new and Lisa’s heart was filled with warmth and she couldn’t help but smile, her worry forgotten. However, she shouldn’t have let her guard down as all came back to her when she opened the box.
“Yukina.”
“Yes ?”
“I love you, but orange is just an almost red.”
“...It wouldn’t be called orange if it was.”
Yukina didn’t escape her hug- or was she crushing her ?- Yukina didn’t seem to complain either way. She still tried to argue for how the orange watch strap was actually fine. Lisa smiled. She really wouldn’t have it any other way.
