Their free hands dangled between them, and Benji thought about how easy it would be to close the distance between them, threading his fingers through Ethan’s.
Ethan looked at him just as he thought it, and Benji had an irrational momentary fear that he’d read his mind, because he brushed his hand against Benji in a way that could totally be coincidence, but didn’t feel like one. And Benji looked back, trying to tell Ethan something with his eyes, only he didn’t know what. And then Ethan actually fucking grabbed his hand in his, and Benji was so startled that he stopped walking. Ethan quickly pulled his hand back. “Sorry,” he said. “I obviously read that completely wrong.”
“No! You didn’t, it’s just—” Benji didn’t know what to say. He’d hoped for this to happen for so long, but had never thought it actually would. “I don’t understand.”
“No, I suppose I should explain,” Ethan said. “I—I thought you might— You’re my best friend, Benji. The best I’ve ever had. And we work so well together. But I have these other feelings for you as well. I honestly wasn’t sure I’d feel this deeply about a person again.”
