to be (or not to be)

Summary:

Play

Ethan gets stuck spending his Friday night in a stuffy auditorium.

Notes:

*Just something short and sweet.

Work Text:

Ethan wasn’t one to be into theater, it was just never one of his things.

Sure in high school he had attended a few plays, mostly because he thought it would earn him brownie points with the girl he was trying to impress.

But he never actually went because he cared much about the show.

And he had seen a few shows on Broadway, but like his brother liked to remind him, that was different.

There was singing and dancing on Broadway.

And generally the people sitting in the audience with you were just as into it as you were.

But here, sitting in a stuffy high school auditorium with Leanne on one side of him and his son on the other, he was not nearly as invested in being here.

“Why are we here again mom?” He knew that he should say something to him about being respectful, but he wholeheartedly agreed with his line of questioning.

“Because your sister has been preparing for this play for months and we are going to sit here and support her because we love her.” Ethan heard Jesse chuckle from the other side of his wife and he couldn’t help but smirk. “You two, stop it.”

He and Jesse both held their hands up in defense, knowing damn good and well better than to argue with her.

“But moooom, it’s a Friday night.” Yeah, the first Friday night they had had off together in a month, and instead of that fancy date night he had been promising her, he was stuck here, surrounded by equally bored teeangers and parents who were trying to act excited. “I was supposed to go to the football game.”

“You can go next week.” Ethan watched as Tucker rolled his eyes before slouching back in his chair, his arms crossing over his chest in a move that he had certainly learned from his mother. “And stop pouting.”

Leanne shot him a look and Ethan swallowed, forcing out a smile.

“I’m not pouting.” Jesse snorted and he couldn’t help but shot a look over the woman’s shoulder and in the nurse’s direction. “It’s just… Tuck’s right, it’s Friday. We had date night plans, remember?”

He waggled his eyebrows at her and she simply stared at him, causing him to let out a sigh.

“Sophie is really excited about this and we are going to be excited for her.” And then she was flopping back in her seat and huffing, her own arms crossing over her chest as she mirrored their son.

“Alright, alright.” He threw his hands up in surrender, leaning back against the seat as he reached down and took the program from her hands. “What play is this anyway?”

“Something Shakespeare.” Tucker’s response only elicited groans from all three adults and Ethan couldn’t help but chuckle. “Sarah said it’s like the longest play ever.”

“Wonderful.” He did his best to paint on a smile, watching as Jesse tried to hold back another chuckle. “Just wonderful.”
