Chapter 2: mr darcy insecure reader

Summary:

requested on my tumblr: "Could you maybe do a mr. Darcy and gender neutral reader? Maybe the reader is convinced he doesn’t care for them but he does? Idk just an insecure reader in general? If not that is totally ok! There really aren’t enough mr Darcy x readers!"

Chapter Text

y/n hadn’t a clue what to do when the letter arrived, their name etched perfectly into the envelope in familiar strokes. they didn’t need to be a genius to know who sent it.

“oh, what am i to do?!” y/n wailed, dropping over their couch’s arm with a hand plastered to their forehead.

“open it, perhaps?” their friend replied, not bothering to make more than a glance in y/n’s direction.

“yes, that would be the proper thing, wouldn’t it? mr. darcy must be waiting, after all!” they reasoned, rising with a frown, their eyes trained on the letter haunting them from the coffee tray it had been thrown on. though, as if they had a change of heart, y/n let out another groan, flopping back down onto the couch.

“but what if he is to say he hates me? loathes my presence, requesting eagerly to never hear an utterance of my name henceforth?!” they cried, snapping up to grasp the arm of the couch, their head trained in the direction of their friend.

“truly, y/n, you think too much!” they chirped, dropping the embroidery hoop they had been working on. “he is but a man- one besotted with you, at that! read the letter, i’m sure he will tell you as much.” they shrugged, rising from their seat to hand the letter over. “go on.” they urged.

y/n considered their options- was heartbreak really the only outcome? their mind screamed to have common sense, of course he loved them, and yet, the nervous insecurities clouded y/n’s vision. “okay.” they murmured through closed eyes. a sliver of hope shone through the fog- maybe mr. darcy did feel as infatuated with them as they were with him, though only time would tell.

y/n’s fingers trembled as they grasped the letter, their friend squeezing their shoulder, glancing over to read it. it took only a few seconds of frantic scanning to finish the lette. and, all at once, nothing seemed so bad anymore.
