Chapter 8: A Portion of Crimson

Notes:

I moved a segment from the end of Red's first chapter and put it in this one instead

Chapter Text

The fairy rushed towards them, her tiny aura blipping rapidly.

“Vio is being executed!” she yelled at them.

Red was moving before Green had even issued the order to hurry.

The fairy moved in front of him. “No, wait, this way! You still don't have a sword, but I know where you can get some weapons!”

Red blinked and followed her into a small little room. And in there was an entire outfit of enchanted gear.

A hat, some gloves, a pair of boots, and…

“Oh! An ice rod!”

Red held out the hat to Vio, but the other shook his head.

“I’ve taken a trophy of sorts,” he said, patting a bag tied to his belt. “Something that belonged to Shadow Link.”

Red didn’t know what to think of that.

“Um, okay,” he said softly, turning to Green. “I guess you get the hat then!”

Green smiled. “Thank you Red,” he was quiet for a moment. “…What is it?”

Red shrugged. “No idea!”

Green stared at the floppy hat for a moment, poking at the medallion attached to the brim for a moment before replacing his normal hat.

And in the span of just a few blinks Green shrank until he was nearly small as a pebble.

“Oh my gosh, you’re tiny now!!” Red exclaimed.

Green reappeared, chuckling as he removed that hat. “Well, I guess that could be useful.”

Red then turned to Blue and held out the pegasus boots. “I know they’re a little gir-”

Blue grabbed the, strangely tall-heeled, boots. “Don’t care,” he said flatly. “They’re magic, doesn’t matter what they look like. And…”

Blue’s face went flushed. “You don’t turn down gifts,” he said gruffly.

Red smiled at him. He could feel Green and Vio looking at them oddly, but he paid them no mind. He couldn’t, really. Not when Blue was smiling like that.

The large blue dodongo roared in outrage as its gullet was shredded by shrapnel, collapsing to the floor in a heap.

“D-did we kill it?” Red asked hesitantly.

Vio wiped his hands on his tunic. “I think so.”

“We rescued another Maiden?!” Red asked.

Green clapped him on the shoulder. “Yes, Red, we did.”

Red cheered.

A tentacle wrapped around Red’s leg and he felt himself get pulled from the ground, dangling uselessly from the fluid limb like a puppet. Vaati’s toothy mouth opened wide to growl at him and Red screamed.

The sound of Green throwing his boomerang and then Red was free, except…

“This isn’t any better!!!!” Red shrieked as he fell towards an opening in the cloud layer.

Something crashed into him, and then both crashed into solid ground. Wh-what? He wasn’t dead?!?

Red opened his eyes, unsure when he had closed them, and saw Blue. Blue, arms wrapped around Red protectively.

“I got you,” Blue said softly. “No one’s dying today except for Vaati, especially not you.”

Red felt an emotion surge through him, a fondness he hadn’t expected to have.

“M-my blue hero,” Red whispered, unable to tear his eyes away from the other’s face.

Blue’s mouth twisted and his cheeks flushed. “We, uh, you… you’re uh, freaking me out a bit with the wide eyed staring.”

Tentacles wrapped around the both of them and Red realized that they had been distracted, hadn’t been paying attention to Vaati, to the fight. But…

At least he had Blue with him. Everything would be just fine, as long as Red had Blue.

Ganon was a monster. A giant blue-skinned monster with a boar-like face.

“Fear me, heroes, for I am your doom!” he bellowed.

Red trembled, feeling his sword shake in his grip. He couldn’t… There was no way they could beat that thing!

“Red! Red!! Snap out of it!” Blue shouted at him.

Red turned to him, feeling his eyes drip with tears. “H-how are we… we can’t defeat that!

Blue grabbed his hands. “We are heroes. We have to. For the sake of everyone, for ourselves, for everyone we know. We can do this, you can do this. I know you can.”

Red shook his head and Blue crushed him in a hug. “We’ll be fine, I promise.”

“Do you really promise?” Red asked wetly.

“I really really promise.”

Red awoke screaming, images of flames and open skies still filling his mind.

Blue was there in an instant, holding him tightly. “It was a nightmare, just a nightmare,” he reassured.

Red sobbed. “But it felt so real .”

Blue picked him up and carried him over to his bed. Red could feel the stares of Green and Vio, but he didn’t care.

The blanket was pulled over him and Blue curled one arm around Red’s waist and the other hand was placed on his wet cheek.

“Go back to sleep, Red,” Blue whispered. “I’ll be here if you have any more nightmares.”

Red pressed his face into Blue’s neck. “M-m-my hero,” he whispered.

A tiny kiss was pressed into his hair. “My hero,” he whispered back.

Red woke up two more times that night, each time to Blue shaking him, nightmares he could barely remember, didn’t want to remember, already faded.

Blue was holding his hand, as they walked through the town.

“I want to be a baker, I think,” Red said.

Blue turned to him and smiled. “You’d be the most heroic baker.”

And then he leaned down and pressed a soft kiss to Red’s lips.

Red froze, feeling his eyes widen.

Blue pulled back with an unsure expression on his face. “Did… you not like that? Not want that?”

Red lifted his free hand to his lips. “You kissed me,” he whispered.

Blue stared at him. “Yeah.”

Red gripped Blue’s hand tighter. “I thought… you wouldn't want to kiss me.”

Blue leaned down and kissed him again.

"I always want to kiss you."
