Phoenix walked outside of Edgeworth apartment building. The cold air of the early morning nipped at him. He made his way to where he had put his bike, only to find it not there. Instead, there was a broken lock Phoenix had used to keep his bike there.
"Shit." The attorney grumbled under his breath, just his luck that someone stole it, Especially since this place seemed like a nice crime free area. He didn't know the area well enough to get home by himself. So with a sigh, he turned to go back inside and ask Edgeworth for help.
Phoenix waited outside his rival's door anxiously. He had already knocked once, but what if Edgeworth was in the shower and didn't hear him? Or what if he was purposely avoiding him. (What am I even doing? I should have just gotten an uber.)
After a few more minutes of anxious waiting, a bit more knocking, and worrying that Edgeworth was mad at him. The door opened. "Wright? Did you forget something?" Edgeworth asked. His hair looked damp, and he appeared to have just gotten out of the shower.
"No, but my bike got stolen. I was hoping you could give me a ride home?" Phoenix scratched the back of his neck. "Come in Wright," Edgeworth invited Phoenix inside. "I'll talk to the management, they have security cameras towards the front of the building. They probably got who stole it on camera."
Phoenix stepped inside Edgeworth apartment once again. He heard the sound of claws pitter patterning against the hardwood floor. He smiled as pess came up to him, wagging her tail.
Edgeworth went to grab his phone, and called the management of the building. Meanwhile, Phoenix sat down on the couch, Pess hopped up to join him. He began to pet Pess, trying to take his mind off of everything. But he couldn't.
(Making me breakfast, inviting me to stay the day, and now this? Why is Edgeworth being so kind to me? Does he… love me?) Phoenix had thought about that possibly being the case before, but it never seemed right.
Still, Phoenix wanted to know, and he had just the tool to figure out how.
Phoenix continued to pet Pess till Edgeworth returned from the phone. "The good news is they caught the theft on camera, the bad news was that they couldn't make it there face."
"Great." Phoenix said sarcastically. "Looks like I'll be walking to court till I can afford a new one." Phoenix covered his face in his hands, frustered.
"I can drive you to court." Edgeworth offered quickly, "if you want to." He looked down from Phoenix. Like he was trying to hide something.
Phoenix took a deep breath, grabbed his magatama, and asked Edgeworth the question he had been scared to ask. "Why are you doing this for me?"
"Because we're friends." Edgeworth said, but then chains came across him, and 3 locks appeared. (Only 3, Phoenix you can do this) he thought to himself.
"Ed- Miles," Phoenix corrected himself, "I think we both know there's more going on than just that."
"Like what? That we're rival's or close friends? I don't see how there could be anymore to us than that." Edgeworth glared back.
Phoenix felt like his heart was stabbed. (W-was I, wrong?) He waited for a lock to break, to prove his worst fear a reality. But it didn't. In fact, the chains got tighter around the prosecutor. Holding the secret closer to his heart.
"Perhaps there is." Phoenix rebutted.
"Nothing that I've done to you has passed the lines of normal friendship."
"So booking a private jet and immediately crossing the ocean is a normal thing?"
"Ngh…" Miles grabbed his arm, as one lock broke. "You're right about that. But I honestly thought you died, I was so scared for you Phoenix."
"I was too," Phoenix looked down at his badge. "I thought I'd never see you again."
Edgeworth gripped his arm more. "Phoenix… I'm sorry you had to think that." One lock was shaking. But the other one only seemed to tighten.
"It wasn't your fault. You couldn't stop me from crossing that bridge." Phoenix placed his hand over Edgeworth's arm. His other hand was still in his pocket.
Edgeworth noticed his hand. "Wright, are you using your magatama?" He asked, glaring at Phoenix. (Oh no) Phoenix thought. "...yes."
Phoenix expected Edgeworth to get mad at him, throw him out of his apartment, and tell him to never use the magatama on him again. But instead, Edgeworth just sighed. "If you're going to continue with this, I want you to do it without your magatama."
"Oh… ok." Phoenix took the magatama out of his pocket, and set it down on the couch. Then he turned back to Edgeworth.
"Phoenix, I've just been trying to repay you for all that you've done for me." He looked down, gripping his arm tighter and tighter.
"Miles," Phoenix gently moved his hand onto the one miles was gripping his arm with, he gently led it off of his arm and into his hand. " You don't have to repay me for anything."
"But I want to. You've done so much for me, and all I've done in return is hurt you." Phoenix could swore he heard another lock breaking. (Almost there) he thought.
"Miles, yes you did hurt me. But I've forgiven you for it. I thought I failed you. I was too late to save you. That if I had just called you that night, You wouldn't have left me."
"How could you? You thought I was dead, Phoenix. I was scared to come back, scared to see you…" Miles' voice cracked. He squeezed his eyes shut.
"And I said something horrible to you Miles. I am so sorry for what I said. I should've never said it."
"...do you still believe that." The prosecutor now had tears dripping down his check. "Do you still wish I was dead?"
Phoenix brought his hand to his cheek. Whipping away the tears. "No." Then with a deep breath Phoenix broke the lock he had on his own heart. "I love you, Miles Edgeworth. I have always loved you."
Edgeworth starred in surprise at Phoenix, his mouth slightly ajar. "I love you too, Phoenix Wright." He finally spoke.
The prosecutor brought his hand to the attorney's face, The two embraced, and the last lock broke.
