Work Text:

"Ready? Five, six, seven, eight!"

Mr. Schue had asked Mike Chang to lead a dance boot camp for preparation for sectionals and was already pleased with the progress the kids had been making. Finn was able to keep up with Mike, not necessarily doing the steps right, but it was a start. Mercedes was picking up the choreography quickly, which was always a good thing, and Kurt had stopped adding his signature shoulder shimmy to every move. Even some of the kids who didn't really need the extra help wanted to come to the rehearsal, like Brittany, Blaine, and Quinn.

So far, it had been a very successful day. So far.

"Alright guys," Mike started, "we're gonna add a few more steps now. So after the kick ball-change, we're going to add a three-step turn to the right. You guys wanna try that real quick?"

Everyone's three-step turns looked great.

At least, they did until Finn somehow managed to step and turn the wrong way and bumped right into Kurt, knocking him to the ground.

"Oh my God Kurt, I'm so sorry!"

Kurt was sitting on the ground hissing in pain and holding his ankle. Blaine, Finn, Mike, and Mr. Schue ran over to help him.

"Where does it hurt, sweetie," Blaine asked, trying to keep his boyfriend calm. Kurt had a history of freaking out when he or someone around him got hurt. He fainted at the sight of blood or vomit, and couldn't be around people if they had sprained or broken a bone because 'what if you could visibly see the bone, Blaine? That's gross!'

Kurt let out a short, shaky breath, "my ankle, I felt something snap when I fell and it really hurts."

"Can you move it at all?"

Kurt didn't even try, immediately shaking his head frantically, "it literally hurts so bad that I can't feel it."

"Mercedes, go into my office and grab an ice pack," Mr. Schue ordered, "Quinn, go grab the nurse, and Finn, get Burt on the phone."

Finn whipped out his phone and dialed his number as the girls ran out of the room. Kurt continued to wince in pain, so Blaine gently rubbed circles on the injured boy's back to try and soothe him. It was not working very well, seeing as Kurt was shaking like a leaf and was starting to cry.

"Burt's not answering," Finn said.

Mr. Schue turned to Finn, "keep calling until he answers."

Soon enough, the nurse came in, immediately sitting down next to Kurt. She asked Mr. Schue what happened and all of the basic questions he could answer before turning to Kurt.

"It's your left ankle, right sweetheart," she asked calmly.

Kurt nodded, gritting his teeth together. The nurse carefully pried his hands away from his ankle so she could take a look at it. Kurt's ankle had swelled up and was all black and blue. It was definitely broken. The nurse opened her bag and pulled out some compression wrap to wrap his ankle. Before she started, however, Kurt freaked out.

"What are you doing?! Don't touch it," he shrieked, backing away from her.

"I have to wrap it so that it doesn't move too much on the way to the hospital."

Kurt's eyes widened at the mention of the hospital. Everyone knew that Kurt hated hospitals. He had hated them since his mom died of cancer when he was eight, and it didn't really help that he had a huge fear of needles. Just as Kurt was about to protest, the pain in his ankle seemed to get even worse. He kind of felt like-

"I think I'm gonna faint," he mumbled before he abruptly collapsed backward into Blaine's arms.

"Oh my God, Kurt?! What the hell just happened," Blaine exclaimed.

"He's going to be okay, calm down. He probably just fainted because he was in extreme pain. Would you prefer to call an ambulance or take him to a hospital yourself?"

"I'll take him," Mr. Schue said before turning to Blaine and Finn, "call your parents and let them know I've got you. Everyone else can go home since most of you drive anyways."

"Mr. Schue I can't carry Kurt," Blaine said.

"It's okay, I got it. Why don't you try to get in touch with Carole since we can't get ahold of Burt."

Mr. Schue carefully lifted the unconscious boy into his arms, careful not to jostle his ankle too much, and he, Blaine, Finn, and the nurse walked out to his car. Blaine climbed into the back seat and helped Mr. Schure get Kurt into the car. Finn got into the passenger seat, and Mr. Schue got into the driver's, and with that, they started the drive to the hospital.

Blaine had called Carole twice before she finally picked up. Luckily, it has while they were in the car.

"Blaine, sweetie, aren't you supposed to be at glee club," she asked, "and whatever it is, you'll have to be quick, I'm only on break for another five minutes."

"Oh, you're working today?"

Carole was a nurse at the hospital. Usually, she worked earlier in the morning, so Blaine wasn't expecting her to say that she was working.

"Yeah, I had to cover for someone. So what can I do for you?"

"Right, well Kurt sorta had an accident during glee club and Mr. Schue is taking us to the hospital."

Carole gasped, "what? What happened? Is he okay? Let me talk to him."

"Finn bumped into him during practice and he fell and hurt his ankle and then the nurse came and said it looked broken and the Kurt passed out."

"Oh my, okay, wait you said Mr. Schuester is driving you to the hospital?"

"Yeah, and Finn is here, too. He's been calling Burt for like 20 minutes but he hasn't answered so Mr. Schue told me to call you."

"Okay, I'll wait in the waiting room for you guys and I'll call Burt. Blaine, honey, is Kurt still unconscious, or did he wake up?"

"No, he's still out," Blaine said, glancing at Kurt.

"Try to get him to wake up, it's easier for us to fix him up if he's awake. And did you say Finn was calling Burt?"

"Yeah, but he said he's not answering his cell."

"I'll call the tire shop. Usually, when he's there he doesn't check his cell, so don't worry about it. I'll see you in a bit, okay sweetie?"

"Yeah, thanks Carole," Blaine responded, hanging up. He gently started to shake Kurt's shoulder to try and wake him up.

"What did mom say," Finn asked.

"She's going to call the tire shop and that she'll meet up in the waiting room."

Kurt began to stir, bringing a hand up to rub his eyes. After a couple of seconds, he peered up at Blaine, slightly confused.

"Hey baby," Blaine said, gently rubbing his thumb over Kurt's cheek, "How're you feeling?"

Kurt groaned, "mmm, tired. Where're we goin'?"

"To meet up with Carole," Blaine said quickly, trying not to freak Kurt out by the idea of going to the hospital.

"But she's workin' today. She said she hadda cover f'r Casey," the older boy slurred, clearly not fully coherent, "Hey, why can't I feel m' foot?"

"Honey, do you remember what happened earlier? At glee club?"

Kurt pondered for a moment before glaring up at Blaine, "Finn's a dick."

Mr. Schue laughed from the front seat as Finn turned around.

"I am not! It was an accident, man!"

Kurt turned towards the front of the car, "Mr. Schue if you ever decide to put me next to Finn in a dance again, I'll quit glee club.

"I'll make a note of it, buddy," Mr. Schue smiled.

They had finally pulled into the valet area of the emergency room. Mr. Schue asked Finn to hop out and get a wheelchair for Kurt so they could get him into the hospital easily. Mr. Schue and Blaine helped the injured boy out of the car and into the chair and wheeled him into the ER. They found Carole and went to check Kurt in.

Kurt, however, was starting to panic. There were so many doctors and nurses rushing around, and so many patients and families waiting. There was a pregnant woman being taken to the maternity ward, her husband running behind her. He saw a little girl throwing up into a bag as her mother rubbed her back. There seemed to be about 4 people who were hacking up a lung and had ashes on their faces, and someone had just been rushed down the hall, apparently having been stabbed, or at least that's what the doctors were yelling.

Blaine seemed to notice Kurt's uneasy state and gently rested a hand on his shoulder.

"Are you okay, Kurt?"

Kurt looked up at Blaine with wide eyes, shaking his head ever-so-slightly.

"I want my dad," he said in the smallest voice Blaine had ever heard.

Blaine crouched in front of Kurt, placing a hand on his knee, "Carole said he'll be here in about five minutes okay?"

"But I want my dad now."

Blaine's heart broke for his boyfriend. He looked so child-like, sitting in a wheelchair that was far too big for him, staring at him with large eyes and asking for his dad. The younger boy noticed how Kurt's eyes began to water, so he grabbed his hand and held it tightly.

"I know, love, I know. He's on his way, I promise. Just hang tight, okay?"

Kurt nodded through his tears, wanting nothing more than a hug from his dad. He and his dad had been through a lot together, and he always knew how to make Kurt feel better when he was upset.

Mr. Schue, Blaine, and Finn took Kurt back into the seating area while Carola finished up at the desk. They sat for a few minutes, trying to strike up random conversations to keep Kurt's mind off of his injury. After a little while, the doors opened and Burt Hummel walked in. He spotted them, immediately rushing to his son's side.

"Dad!"

"Hey, buddy, how're you feeling," Burt asked, sitting next to Kurt.

"It hurts a lot," Kurt cried.

Burt pulled Kurt into a hug, letting him cry into his shoulder.

"It'll be okay, bud. Carole's gonna make sure they take good care of you."

A moment later, Carole and another nurse came over to take Kurt to the back so they could x-ray his ankle. They said one other family member could come with them, so Burt insisted that Blaine went. Blaine, however, convinced him to stay with Kurt instead. They were lead to the back, leaving Blaine, Finn, and Mr. Schue, who insisted on staying, to wait.

About an hour later, Carole and Burt came back with Kurt trailing behind them, a cast on his foot. He was using crutches to hobble back into the waiting room and seemed very uncomfortable doing so.

Blaine, Mr. Schue, and Finn stood up as the others approached them.

"It's broken so he'll be on crutches for six weeks," Carole said.

Kurt frowned, "I guess that means I can't compete at sectionals."

"Or regionals, buddy," Burt said.

Mr. Schue thought about it for a minute before saying, "would you like a solo?"

"What?"

"You can't dance, but there's no reason you shouldn't be allowed to stay center stage and sing a solo, right? You're talented Kurt, it would be such a shame to watch you sit this one out. So what do you say?"

Kurt's face lit up, "A solo?! Can I sing 'I'm the Greatest Star'? I was gonna sing it for my West Side Story audition but I guess I can't be in the show if I can't walk."

"Of course buddy, I think that's a great choice for you," the teacher smiled.

Later that night, Kurt and Blaine were cuddled up on the living room couch in the Hudson-Hummel's living room. After leaving the hospital and saying goodbye to Mr. Schue, everyone piled into Burt's car and went home. Carole, unfortunately, had to stay at the hospital and finish her shift, but she would be back later, she said.

Burt had offered to drop Blaine off at home if he didn't want to go with them, but Kurt quickly shut his father down, saying he wanted Blaine to stay. Once they got home, Finn and Burt helped Kurt inside while Blaine grabbed some pillows and blankets from Kurt's bedroom and set them up on the couch. The two boys had been cuddled up, watching Moulin Rouge since.

Kurt was comfortably resting on Blaine's chest, his cast propped up on a pillow on the opposite end of the couch when he realized something. He slowly began to get up, but stopped when he felt Blaine's hand on his shoulder.

"Where are you going, baby?"

"I wanted to go get Teddy."

Teddy was a pink teddy bear that Kurt's mom had gotten him when he was little. Ever since her death, he used it as a way to feel connected to his mom whenever he needed her most. He knew that if she was still alive, she would be taking good care of him, but he wanted his bear just to feel closer to her.

"You need to rest that foot, lovey. I'm not going to let you get up," Blaine said.

Kurt pouted, "But I need him."

Blaine slid out from under Kurt and stood up, "I'll get that for you, just tell me where he is."

"He's in the desk drawer closest to the window."

"Okay, I'll be right back. Stay put." Blaine drops a kiss onto Kurt's forehead before ascending up the stairs.

Kurt smiles to himself, not even noticing his dad walking in and sitting on the recliner.

"He's a good kid," Burt said.

Kurt looks at his dad, "yeah, he's the best."

"You know, I don't how many other guys would do all this for you. He's been by your side pretty much all day, and has been making sure you're comfortable, hell the kid even went to get a pink teddy bear for you. He really loves you, Kurt."

"Yeah, he does," Kurt smiled.

Blaine came back down with Kurt'ss stuffed animal in his hands as well as another movie, but froze at the bottom of the staircase when he saw Kurt was staring at him with nothing but love in his eyes.

Blaine awkwardly laughed, "Why are you looking at me like that?"

Kurt shifted so Blaine could sit behind him again, taking the teddy bear from his hands and cuddling it close to his chest.

"I love you, you know," Kurt whispered up to Blaine.

Blaine smiled down at him, "I love you too, baby."

They stared at each other for a few seconds before Burt shouted, "Just kiss already!"

Kurt blushed, embarrassed by his dad. Blaine swooped down and planted a gentle kiss onto his lips while he was distracted. They broke apart after a couple of seconds, Kurt's face bright red because they had just kissed in front of Burt.

Blaine laughed, "God, you're adorable."

"Blaine!"

"It's true! How did I end up with the cutest boy in the entire world?"

Kurt playfully smacked Blaine before turning his attention back to the movie. An hour later, the credits were rolling on the TV screen. Burt had gone to help Carole and Finn with dinner, leaving the boys to rest. Kurt turned to Blaine and smiled.

"Thank you for being with me today."

"There's nowhere else I'd rather be than by your side. I love you Kurt, and if that means I have to spend the day at the hospital with you, then so be it."

Kurt moved in to kiss Blaine, but froze when Carole walked in.

"Sorry boys," she said, realizing what was going on, "dinner's ready."

"Thanks Carole," Blaine said as she went back into the dining room.

Kurt sat up, reached for his crutches.

"Don't," Blaine said, "I'll get them for you."

'How did I get so lucky,' Kurt thought to himself as Blaine helped him hobble over to the table for dinner.
