Summary
“Well, there goes the neighborhood.”
A bout of hyena cackling and jeers from the drugged-out group of boys draped across couches and chairs breaks out across the room. Declan Lynch doesn’t flinch in the face of cocaine or pastel-colored pills, however, as he takes in the rest of the scene. The dorm room is an ensuite, with three other doors hiding bedrooms and a bathroom. The overhead lights are off with only two low table lamps to dim the area. Smoke makes everything hazy and the stench of weed makes his nose scrunch. On the coffee table are bottles of pills, white powder, and a large bag of weed. The windows are open to the summer air, helping flood the smoke and scent outward but not fast enough. He folds his arms across his chest, trying to ignore the way his shirt sticks between sweaty shoulder blades.
Joseph Kavinsky sprawls like a king on a throne, surveying his kingdom of debauchery. White shades hide his eyes and he smiles with too many teeth.
Declan has no idea why he’s here.
