The Vow of Duty, or a Small Matter of Cardassian Etiquette by romanathethird
I’m bookmarking this so I don’t loose it. It’s a comedy of manners, but a post-canon one that stays remarkably true to the characters and DS9 we saw on screen. Unlike many stories of manner it is written in a very engaging style, succinct and witty, with sharp cuts between scenes so we read the only best of it.
In which Julian intends to visit Cardassia for some sun, a medical conference, and to see his boyfriend. For some reason, it never occurred to him to bring the gown Garak made for him…
He had intended to read the book.
But in his mind there wasn’t all that much difference between “geh’r zIra” and “boyfriend”. He took to using the terms interchangeably in his personal logs. And then he and Garak… well, they never broke up, not formally, but they drifted apart, things that had once been so easy seemed scratchy and difficult. The lively arguments that had sustained them started to feel barbed.

Well. He hadn’t read the book.
And that was about to be a problem.
