Chapter Text

“Miss Grant!” The Brigadier exclaimed in shock as he got a good look inside of the room he had just walked into.

The day had been slow at UNIT HQ and so he’d decided that it was as good of a time as any to visit the Doctor in his laboratory.  Upon entering the room, however, he did not find the Time Lord tinkering away at some new device but Miss Grant with her arms thrown around the neck of Corporal Bell.  The two women were dancing to a slow tune that was being played out of a small radio that sat atop the table.  While someone else may have simply assumed that the two women were just good friends casually dancing to a cheery tune, the Brigadier was broad-minded enough to know that was not the case.  And he’d caught many of his soldiers in the same position.

“Brigadier!” The Corporal exclaimed, pulling away from Jo and straightening her dress, “I apologize, sir, we were just.”

“Oh he knows full well what we were doing, don’t you, Brigadier?” Jo crossed her arms defiantly, staring at the man with a small smile on her face.  She wasn’t scared, of course, of whether or not he’d reprimand them for being in love.  She’d heard, first hand, from John and Mike what her commanding officer thought of same-sex couples.

“Yes, yes, I do,” he stammered, clearly still recovering from the shock, “I just didn’t expect-”

“You didn’t expect Carol and me to be a couple?” Jo skipped to the table and shut off the radio, “Oh really, Brigadier.  You can’t be that dim-witted-”

“Miss Grant!”

“Sorry, sorry,” she paused and stared, dead-eyed, at him, “This won’t be a problem, I assume.”

“Now why would it be?”

“Well, it’s just that-” Bell spoke up, still looking slightly mortified, “Some people view male-male relationships differently than female-female relationships and so…” her voice trailed off and she grabbed onto Jo’s hand for support.

“As I told Sergeant Benton and Captain Yates, I have no issues with whatever relationships my subordinates wish to pursue.  I only ask that you refrain from haphazardly dancing in a laboratory during your duty hours.”

“We weren’t-”

“Yes, of course, sir,” Bell interrupted Jo, taking her by the wrist and dragging her out of the room, “Thank you, sir.  We appreciate it.”

As the door shut behind the two women, the Brigadier shook his head and let out a small chuckle.

“Open-minded indeed…”
