Work Text:
Strangetown- Summer of ‘84,
The sun beat down on Strangetown, hot enough to melt streets and cause waves across the horizon. It was just one of those days, that Circe found herself walking over to the Curious house, knowing that Vidcund was out with his brothers salvaging air conditioning in a sweaty arcade. She was dressed in a black sundress, her bangs sticking to her forehead as she felt her sandals sticking to the molten concrete. “ I wonder if Jenny would be interested in going to the pool...in her bikini,” She thought to herself. She shook her head “ UGH leave me alone!” she cursed under her breath. There was no way that she caught feelings for her boyfriend’s sister, it felt so weird to think about Jenny beyond just being friends, especially in her most recent dreams. When she wasn’t thinking about Jenny she was thinking about every other girl in her class, interlaced with nightmares of going on dates with Loki Beaker. She shivered at the thought and continued thinking about Jenny, imagining their time alone in the house together with her brothers gone. I mean, it wouldn’t be too hard to get into her room being girls and all.
The Curious house was on the horizon, Circe catching the familiar scent of Kitty’s cooking from down the street. She picked up the spare key in the mailbox and welcomed the blast of cold air she received when she walked inside. “ Hi, Mrs. Curious... It’s me Circe!” She called out from the doorway. The blonde woman smiled, turning to face her son’s girlfriend. “ Hi sweety, I just got done making some lemonade, I thought you were going to hang with Vid and the boys?” she gave her a warm smile and handed her a glass to cool herself off with.
“No, Jenny invited me over,” she responded in a mumbled tone, she wasn’t really good at talking to Vidcund’s mom, her overtly nice tone intimidated her, a complete contrast to what she expected from her own mother.
“ Oh Jenny, yeah! She’s back from La Fiesta Tech for the summer, she should be in her room.”
Kitty pointed to the stairs, handing Circe a plate of snacks so they could share. It was much easier getting into Jenny’s bedroom than she thought, especially since Glarn was strict about her staying out of Vidcund’s bedroom. Circe’s heart began to beat faster as she approached the room, hearing music playing over her cassette player from behind the door. She gave a soft knock before going inside to find Jenny sprawled on her bed with her nose buried in a book. She seemed so invested in the story that she barely noticed Circe walk in. “ Oh! Hi Circe, sorry I didn’t hear you come in.” she gave an awkward laugh before nonchalantly hiding her romance novel under her pillows.
Circe admired her appearance, her summer wear consisting of a spaghetti strap crop top and a pair of jean shorts, her face a permanent flush from both the heat and the story she was just reading. Her eyes lingered on her chest a bit too long for her to admit. She patted the spot next to her on the bed and Circe found herself awkwardly sitting next to her friend, offering her the snacks and lemonade. She was too distracted by her face to hear what she had to say, just nodding in response as Jenny began her discussion. How could one girl be so pretty and related to anyone like Vidcund? Her heart was beating so fast, whatever Jenny was talking about was very passionate, something about the plot of her romance novel, she guessed. Jenny’s golden hair sparkled in the afternoon sun and she beamed with so much loving energy. She couldn’t really put anything together as Jenny held onto her hand and said “ and then they KISSED!” she had the widest grin on her face “ Probably one of the best books ever.” She laughed and leaned back on the bed. Circe nodded again, pretending to be as invested. “ Yeah I like that too,” she said in a soft tone.
“ You like them too?” Jenny asked, her excitement dimming down as she scootched closer to Circe.
“I dunno, I just think that they’re really pretty” She continued, a blush forming on her cheeks, “ Like they understand you and you don’t have to explain alot”
Jenny nodded excitedly, “ What else, what else tell me!”
“And compared to boys, they’re just so soft and ...I”
Jenny’s grin widened, her eyebrows raising as her green eyes staring into her soul.
“ I just wanna kiss them ya know?” Circe’s stutter was more apparent now.
Jenny paused for a moment, her eyes shifted to something else in the room, following her gaze she noticed a small alien statue sitting on the dresser. Circe thought nothing of it, her hope was too much to bear.
“ Yeah, I want to kiss them too..” Jenny looked up at her friend, softened by the discussion of kissing.
“ Really?” She chuckled under her breath, tensing up as she felt Jenny’s thigh touch against hers.
Her fists were clenched so tightly that her nails dug into her palms, but she went for it!
Jenny froze as Circe pecked her lips and leaned back. The shock in Jenny’s face shook her to the core and she felt a cloud of regret shroud over her. “ Sorry,” she said under her breath.
Her friend blinked and finally relaxed her shoulders, retrieving the novel she was reading.
“ I was talking about aliens” She corrected Circe.
The other examined the cover of the book. It was illustrated with a woman dressed in space gear being surrounded by androgynous-looking green people.
“ I thought you liked aliens as much as I do! Oh my gosh! I am so sorry!” Jenny covered her face in embarrassment. Circe argued back,
“ I thought you were talking about kissing girls!!”
Jenny’s eyes peeked through her fingers and grinned, “ I didn’t say that the aliens were boys now did I.”
The two girls snorted and Jenny’s hysterical laughter filled the room as she tried to justify her alien romances. It was so cute to see her all flustered, rendered speechless as she waved her hands and cried out “ They are hot okay!”
“ Jenny, Please! I understand!” Circe said, but she did not understand.
She took her hands in hers and shrugged “ I’ll keep your secret if you keep mine” She said with a worried smile.
“ Oh yeah totally...If you let me show you my collection” Jenny excitedly got up, retrieving a stack of stories with girls in them.
“ Just read them and you’ll understand yourself a little bit more” she smiled. Circe only nodded in return, picking up a book with a blonde astronaut lady on the cover.
“ Thanks, Jenny.”
