Chapter 6: Negotiations

Summary:

The group discusses what their next move is going to be.

Chapter Text

Looking to the left of their uncle, the twins got a very good look a Dojima’s face. It was… Interesting, to say the least. He was looking at Adachi with hurt written clearly across his face. It was as if the man wanted to help, but was unsure as to how.

It was as if the man had wanted to take all of the pain and hurt that their uncle was feeling, and just throw it away. The man had looked as if he wanted to take the slightly smaller man into his arms, and never let go. Like he wanted to hold him close, and keep him sheltered, safe, away from the pain that he was currently feeling.

The man would never say it out loud, but he could be quite soft when he truly let himself be. The twins knew this to be true, they’d seen him act completely different when around his daughter, compared to everyone else. They just wished that he’d man up and actually do something for once.

Everyone in the whole of Inaba was aware of the crush that their uncle had on his partner, everyone except Dojima, of course. But, what most people were not aware of, was Dojima’s crush on their uncle. The twins had suspected, but Nanako had confirmed it for them. She’d said that her dad had gotten a little tipsy one night, and started damn near waxing poetic about the man.

She had recorded it, of course. Yu had looked intrigued, uncomfortable, and incredibly disgusted by the sheer amount of sap that was falling from Dojima’s lips. That day is another day that the twins will never forget for as long as they lived.

It was at this moment that Dojima looked up, locking eyes with Ren. The man, upon realizing that he’d been caught, looked downright terrified. At that moment, he took the phrase ‘deer in headlights’ to a completely different level. It took Ren everything that he had in himself to keep from laughing, he came so very close to losing it right then and there.

Thankfully, he was able to keep his face relatively blank, and just looked at Dojima with a single raised eyebrow. He raises his head slightly and gestured from Dojima to his uncle, as if trying to say “do something” without actually using any words.

Dojima looks from him to his uncle, five different emotions crossing his face as his eyes land upon the smaller man in his distraught state. Seeming to come to some type of resolve, Dojima stands up straighter than he had been, clearing his throat as he does so.

The sudden sound seemed to catch Adachi off guard, making him jump slightly as he was snapped out of his stupor. Adachi looks towards the source of the sound, locking eyes with Dojima. The two men share another short conversation with their eyes, then a small but fond smile finds its way onto Adachi’s face.

Their uncle removes one of his hands from his hair, his left hand, instead choosing to plunge it into his pocket. His right hand slides down the back of his head to rest upon the back of his neck. Once it’s there, he slowly starts rubbing it as a way to try and relieve himself of some of his newfound embarrassment.

He chuckles lightly, and then apologizes for losing his cool at one of the most inopportune moments. Dojima waves him off, and then places a comforting hand upon his left shoulder. He lets is sit there for a few moments, squeezing Adachi’s shoulder lightly, as a way to try and dispel any remaining fears the other man might have.

It seems to do the trick, because Adachi lets out a deep sigh and then slumps into himself slightly, looking much less keyed-up than he previously had been.

Dojima gives Adachi’s shoulder one last good squeeze, as if trying to say “I’m here”, before letting his hand fall back to his side. It doesn’t stay there, though, because Dojima quickly straightens himself out, standing taller than he once was, and folds his arms across his chest. Time to get down to business then, Ren assumes.

Dojima takes in a deep breath, then lets out a long sigh. He looks towards Adachi, locking eyes with him once more.

“I’ll go talk to the chief, see if I can’t negotiate anything. At the very least, I’m going to try and keep them from doing any jail time if I can.”

Adachi perks up slightly then, standing up a little straighter than he previously had been. Ren looks at him and sees a determined look on his face. Their uncle nods at his friend, watching as he walks out the door they came in from. After Dojima is gone from sight, Adachi turns his head to look back towards the twins.

He locks eyes with Ren, giving him a small nod as he does so. Ren nods back. Then he looks over towards Akira and snorts. Ren looks over and sees why. The boy had fallen asleep at some point while Adachi was having his minor freak-out.

When they’d first arrived at the police station, the two boys had been placed into a small room and then roughly shoved into two small, uncomfortable chairs. Akira was currently leaning so far into the chair that he was almost sliding off of it, similar to how he had been sitting in the police car. His head was hung backwards over the edge of the chair, his glasses still perched precariously on the end of his nose. He was definitely going to wake up with some type of crick in his neck, that was for sure.

Ren just snorted at his brother, similar to how their uncle had. He decided to follow in his brother’s footsteps and tried to get some sleep while he could. Gently plucking his glasses from his face, he folds the sides in and rests them gently on the table. Which was a far more difficult task than it should have been due to the handcuffs still wrapped around his wrists. He’s going to have marks after this, he just knows it.

Bending down slightly, he rests his head upon the table in front of them. It was slightly uncomfortable, due to how cold and hard the table was, but it would do, for now, he supposed. He was going to wake up in a state similar to his brother, that he was sure of, but there really wasn’t much that he could do about it right now.

He slowly closes his eyes, finding that his fatigue was making this experience much more bearable than it probably was. The bright, neon lights of the room still on, making sleep difficult but not impossible. He hears as his uncle slowly pulls up one of the extra chairs in the room to the table, taking a seat in it across from the twins.

Ren lets out a small sigh. Within a matter of seconds he is consumed by the darkness, falling into a fitful slumber.
