The Photograph

Summary:

Being bored by not having his best friend around, Beetlejuice reminisces with a photograph he has of Lydia to wait until the two of them can see each other again.

Notes:

Hello everyone! This is my first time writing for the Beetlejuice fandom, though I've been a fan for a long while! I hope you enjoy this little piece of fluff that I had the urge to write and I have to warn that I wrote this at a late hour so please excuse any mistakes ^-^

Work Text:

Beetlejuice heaved a sigh as boredom struck him. Granted, it had only been about three days since Lydia last visited him, but three was the magic number after all, and quite frankly he really missed her. He could not help himself for having gotten soft for the sweet and strange breather that was his best friend. Honestly not liking her almost seemed like a crime, but not the fun kind of crime. Beej contemplated having another go at pranking his neighbors but having done that the last two days it now lost its touch to entertain him properly. He supposes his neighbors would appreciate the break, if it was not that they are most likely still trying to undo the damage he had caused them. Beetlejuice let out an evil cackle at that. Oh he was an evil genius, something his sweet Lydia appreciated and sometimes encouraged. It was always a delight if he got her to go along with one of his schemes! The way her eyes would twinkle with that hidden mischief and gleam, her mouth twitching into that small grin that she tried to hide, the way her cheeks flushed that soft pink that also spoke volumes of how alive she was.

Beej felt a shudder go through him, remembering also how warm and soft Lydia is. Since some years have passed, she also grew up into a mature woman, nevertheless their hangout sessions didn’t stop. They had their small fights throughout the years but nothing that would ever separate them. Not if the Ghost with the Most had something to say against that. He would do anything in his power to make her happy, no matter the cost.

Aaaaand he was back to thinking about Lydia so much that he missed her once again. Drat just why did he agree again to let her study for her exam in peace? Oh yeah, because she had bribed him with a box full of chocolate covered beetles and promised to spend an extended weekend with him. He smiled softly at the thought, glad that no one was around to see it. A whole extended weekend with his Lydia was a dream come true! They could watch some of their favorite movies, go explore a bit more of the Neitherworld with the Doomster and maybe cause some mayhem on the way! Oh the possibilities that lay before him, every one better than the last one. Before he got too lost in the fantasy of causing havoc, Beetlejuice carefully reached inside his jacket to a hidden pocket, pulling out a polaroid of Lydia he had taken a while ago. He still remembers the day fondly.

Lydia and Beej were lounging on his couch in the Roadhouse, with him sitting comfortably at one end, scratching his beer belly and Lydia choosing to lean against the armrest of the other side, facing him. One of their favorite movies was playing in the background, yet neither of them were paying attention to it. Instead, Beetlejuice was watching Lydia as she held her trusty camera and took a few pictures of the living room and one of the Ghost himself all while having that soft grin on her features. He watched as the polaroid’s slipped out, with Lydia’s keen eye observing if they came out decent or not. If they were and let us be honest, she is amazing at it so all of them came out perfect, she would hand them to him to inspect. If anyone were to ask, he would deny it, but the Ghost would always let their hands brush when taking the offered photo from the living girl, enjoying the fact that she not only was not grossed out by him but because that small contact of warmth made his dead heart almost start beating. He would rather be fed to sandworms though than to admit something that mushy. As he looked through all the pictures he was handed, he made sure to give her honest criticism and compliments on them. After a having seen a picture of himself that Lydia took back from him, claiming she as going to keep it for her personal photo album, Beetlejuice decided that he also should get a picture of the sweet girl next to him. So, with careful hands he scooped the camera from her, chuckling at hearing a surprised noise leaving her throat at the action and angling the camera to take a picture of Lydia. He was handling the camera with the utmost care, knowing full well that if anything were to happen to it, he would have one angry babes to deal with. Taking a few pictures, it was easy to notice that the Ghost was not that familiar what made the best possible picture, so he had more than a few come out either bad or blurry. Lydia giggled at watching him struggle before sitting upright and giving him a few pointers on how to improve. Following the instructions and sticking out his striped tongue in concentration, he snapped a picture that to his joy came out damn near perfect. It helped that Lydia was giving him a cheek wink, though her cheeks were dusted a soft pink from being a model for such rare occasions. Her hair that was almost the same length as when she was smaller was a bit tousled from having been against the couch, but it made the look all the better. Lydia inspected the photo, giving it an approving nod before claiming that she had an idea. She got a few markers out and handed one to Beetlejuice as well as the picture she took of him, claiming he should write something on the bottom of the polaroid. He snickered and drew some beetles and other small stuff that came to mind. He did not see what Lydia had written until after she had gone back home, and he was thankful for that because he could have sworn his heart almost started to beat once he saw what was on his. Lydia had signed with her name, a skull above the I, she even drew a little bug on there. The giant X and O as well as small hearts were also present and directly to the right there it was, a giant kiss mark. He choked at the implications of it and was not able to stop his head from spinning for a good while.

Now he always kept it close to his person, justifying that that was safest spot to keep it and not because he looked at it so often that it was bothersome to always go back to his room to gaze at it. Plus, it was easier to hide it from others that way. His head shot up at hearing a knock on the door with Lydia calling out to him that she was here for their long weekend. He quickly put the photograph back into the secret pocket of his jacket before rushing to let his babes in, after all they had a weekend to enjoy!!
