Work Text:
I was there, in the middle of the place Kenny had built for the two of us, to be partners and think about a future together, it might be the sweetest thing anyone has ever done for me. I wished I wanted to want to stay, to see the world a little as he saw it, but I couldn't do it, I couldn't. And it was already clear to me.
- What do you think? - he asked with that radiant smile he always had. I returned the gesture, I loved him, I loved him very much and that's why I couldn't lie to him anymore.
-Kenny... - I said slightly erasing the smile I had -There is something I have to talk to you-.
He looked at me and then I moved my face to the window.
- Is something wrong? - He asked, but I didn't answer right away - Kara.... -
-I should have told you before, but I kept making excuses," I began without looking at him.
- What are you trying to say? -
I turned around and stood in front of him, I felt distressed, but I knew it was the right thing to do.
- I'm moving out, Kenny, when I finish school.... I'm going to National City University in North Carolina - I finally confessed - I wanted to tell you, but I still wasn't sure what I wanted and I was afraid of.... losing you -.
I gave a sigh, but he didn't make any gesture of annoyance or give any indication about it, he just looked sad.
- I really wanted to stay, I really did, but.... - I tried to explain, but then he interrupted me.
- It's ok Kara, you have to do whatever you want.... - He touched my shoulder and caressed it - I could never stop you, I'm a Midvile boy, and I like it here - He looked almost forlorn, but his words sounded real - And you.... well you Kara, you are fantastic and you deserve the world, and wherever you go you will thrive, I promise you -
I couldn't say anything else because I would have burst into tears, however, I hugged him, as a goodbye. When I separated from him I spoke again.
- You are a good boy Kenny and you deserve and I know you will find your best adventure partner - I expressed to him.
- You will too, I know... someone who knows everything about you, someone loyal, supportive and who will help you become the best version of yourself Kara Zor-El.... -
We embraced again there, on the Christmas-lit second floor of that old barn in the woods.
Years passed and his words slowly faded in the wind, I had come to the logical conclusion that his prediction would never happen, time had proven it time and time again, the truth was I wasn't meant to have someone.
Until I met her.
The shaky breaths and sleepless nights thinking about her should have been a clear indication, after all he was right, I found my partner, someone who knew everything about me and who had always had my back, and who helped me to see the world more as a human and to feel like one of them, instead of pretending to be one. To her I just had to be Kara, no capes or supernames.
My perfect partner for game night
Always was Lena.
