Chapter 48: Whose is my Hostage?

Summary:

An AU with a Harry who had been Sorted into a different House at Hogwarts with different friends and allies. Who still finds himself having to take part in the Triwizard Tournament is confused when he reaches the bottom of the lake and can"t figure out which person being kept by the Merpeople is his chosen Hostage.

Notes:

As I was planning my latest chapter for A Date for the Yule Ball, I randomly had this idea. Albus had plans for Harry in the Magical World including "friends" who could easily control and manage the boy to make sure he learned things Albus wanted to and at certain times. So what would have happened if something changed? I have read other stories where Albus still tries to make the "friends" he has in mind for Harry to have still try to do their job even when Harry is in another House. I thought I would dive into the idea myself, and since it has been a while since I had written a Drarry chapter, I would post it in this story rather than my Half-Brewed ideas.

Tags: Alternate Universe, Bashing of Albus, Hermione, Ron, and some of the Weasleys. Harry has a different Hogwarts House, Harry is adopted by a Magical Family, Smart Harry.

This chapter will contain a little background to show how Harry"s life is different than the main universe before he arrives at the Merperson village to rescue his "Hostage."

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

History:

Growing up Harry had only known physical, mental, and emotional pain at the hands of his only living relatives the Dursleys. He was treated like an unwanted thing in his childhood home and was beaten for even the slightest reason. His relatives would be harsher in their beatings and abuse whenever anything strange happened around Harry, even when it could not possibly be his fault. Such as when strange people dressed in robes and random disjointed bits of outfits would come over to shake his hand. Since Harry never knew any of these people, his Aunt or Uncle would whisk him away from them before punishing him when they got home for attracting other freaks to them.

One day when Harry was six years old one of these strangers approached him and shook his hand and for some reason thanked him. Just like all the other strangers who had done so, Harry could only wince knowing he would never see the man again but thanks to him Harry was going to be beaten when his Uncle got him back home. Yet something strange and wonderful happened that night, the stranger showed up at #4 accompanied by a pair of people who looked like they were cops. Harry was taken from his Aunt and Uncle"s place as they were arrested. Yet rather than join Dudley as he was sent to live with Uncle Vernon"s sister "Aunt" Marge," Harry was taken in by the stranger who had shaken his hand that afternoon.

As the man removed Harry from #4, he told Harry that his name was Richard Greengrass and just like Harry he was a Magical. Harry was rather confused by what was going on so had just nodded. Mr. Greengrass brought Harry to a place he called the Ministry of Magic where Harry was made to talk to several adults about his life with the Dursleys. Although his Aunt and Uncle had been arrested, Harry did not see it sticking nor would talking to the people at the Ministry do him any good since he had talked to people from the Child Protection Services before but the charges of abuse never seemed to stick. Harry still told about all the abuse he had suffered at his family"s hands before he worked up his courage to ask why Mr. Greengrass had come to shake his hand on the street or why they seemed so interested in Harry.

Mr. Greengrass and the woman they were talking to at the Ministry, named Madam Bones, explained what had really happened to Harry"s parents when he was a baby. Unlike the story he got from the Dursleys who had told him his Mom and Dad died in a car crash, Madam Bones and Mr. Greengrass said his parents had been targeted by a Magical Terrorist and had been killed during a hidden Magical War at the time. They explained that the reason the strange people would come to greet him on the streets was due to Harry being famous since he had survived a killing curse from the terrorist who had killed his parents. Something that had been said had never happened before in the history of the spell. Not only had Harry survived but somehow the spell had rebounded and had destroyed the terrorist himself. Madam Bones, however, shared her belief that the man had not been killed yet, but was out somewhere in the world regaining his strength to start his war against them again.

Mr. Greengrass explained that he had been delighted to see Harry since he had once worked with Harry"s Mom at the Ministry so had come over to see how he was doing. Mr. Greengrass informed Harry that he worked as a Mind Healer and had seen some signs of abuse in Harry"s movements and body language. So after he had shaken Harry"s hand but before Uncle Vernon had pulled Harry out of sight, Mr. Greengrass had cast a tracking spell on Harry. With the spell in place, Mr. Greengrass was able to follow Harry to #4 and observe Harry for a bit including the beating Harry got just because he had been greeted by Mr. Greengrass. Seeing the abuse done to Harry, Mr. Greengrass had called for some Ministry law officers, and as he waited for them to arrive he had interviewed the Dursley"s neighbors to find out what they had to say about Harry. Hearing the lies the Dursleys had spread about Harry to cut him off from anyone in the area as well as witnessing the beating he had received, Mr. Greengrass informed the law officers when they arrived leading to the Dursleys" immediate arrest rather than placing them under observation.

Harry lived through a couple of days of interviews at the Ministry where stayed in a safe room, with each day making him happier since it appeared this time the charges against the Dursleys were going to stick and he would be free of them. After a week, Mr. Greengrass who had stayed with him through the entire process asked if Harry wanted to come stay with him and his family. Since the man had shown more kindness to him than anyone else in his life and had gotten him away from his relatives Harry had immediately agreed. Half a year later Harry was officially adopted by Mr. Greengrass and his wife becoming Harry James Potter-Greengrass just in time for his seventh birthday.

Becoming a member of the Greengrass family through his adoption, Harry gained not only some loving parents but a pair of sisters one of which was around his age. His new family welcomed him warmly into their home with full acceptance. However, it had taken Harry a while to realize that his new sister Daphne did since thanks to the Greengrass family magic she had perfect control over her emotions and would rarely show them unless she really had to. But Harry soon learned to read her emotions even if her face did not show them as he got to know her better.

Besides getting to know his new adopted family, Harry was informed about the Magical Word as he learned of its history, social order, protocols, and even some lore. Harry found it all fascinating and drank in every bit of knowledge he learned about the world he had never known he belonged to. Since he no longer had to pretend to be dumber than Dudley lest he got beaten by his Uncle and Aunt, Harry took great pleasure in devouring every book he could find, which considering the Greengrass family had a large two-story room in his new home that was just a library was a lot of books. Harry"s new younger sister, Astoria, often joked that Harry wanted to read all the books the family-owned before his next birthday and that he would just love one of the kids of their family allies known as Nott.

Harry only met the allies of his new family after he was adopted just in case he had chosen not to stay with them. The first meeting happened during Christmastime when Harry shortly after Harry turned seven, though his new family informed him that in the Magical World, that time of year was called the Yule. Harry was introduced to the allies of his new family as any other newcomer, without having to be carried in by his new mom since most newcomers were introduced a few months after their birth. Daphne and Astoria took Harry around to introduce him to the other children around their age during the Yule Ball letting him meet Heir Nott and hit it right off with his fellow bookworm, though Heir Nott preferred the term Bookwyrm. Harry also met Heir Goyle, Heir Zabini, Heiress Parkinson, Messors Crabbe, Malfoy, and McMillian at the party.

Throughout the following year, Harry would join his sisters in going over to the others" manors so that by the time he had his eighth birthday he had been permitted to call all but Mister McMillan by his first name. Besides Theodore "Theo" Nott, Harry had surprisingly struck up a friendship with Draco Malfoy after Harry had discovered his ability to fly on a broomstick and love for it. Draco began to invite Harry over to his Manor so the pair of them could fly together, and Harry even talked Draco to come with him to the Muggle World to see a movie along with Harry"s sisters. By the time both boys had turned ten they were best friends, even more so than Harry and Theo were. Cause while Harry liked to read and learned he just could not sit around and do nothing but read all the time. He wanted to be active and Draco when he was around friends and allies was always full of energy, though he tried to contain it when he was with people he did not know or in public.

Once Harry, Daphne, and his friends arrived at Hogwarts, Harry feared his friendship with Draco had hit a snag when he was sorted into Ravenclaw while Draco had been sent to Slytherin House as the rest of his family had done over the years. Yet the pair"s friendship remained as strong as ever, with the only thing that happened with Harry being in Ravenclaw was bringing more friends into Harry"s friends group thanks to some of his new housemates. Not that Harry got along with all his fellow students at the castle finding two students from Gryffindor in particular to be annoying as hell.

Harry did his best to avoid and ignore the pair, which was harder than he thought it would. Thankfully the pair did not seem to like Draco that well so they tended to avoid Harry when the pair of best friends were together. Over the years Harry"s friendship with Draco grew into something more so that during their Fourth Year when Harry had somehow been entered into the Triwizard Tournament, Harry asked Draco to be his date to the Yule Ball. The pair had started to officially date after that.

The Second Task and memories of previous years at Hogwarts:

After about half an hour, Harry reached the bottom of the Black Lake to retrieve the thing the Merpeople had taken from him. Harry was thankful that with Draco"s help, he had managed to order a decent supply of Gillyweed making his trip through the lake a little easier with his hands and feet becoming fin-like unlike the other Champions thus making him the first to arrive. Yet rather than find his Night Fury Broomstick or even his dad"s old Invisibility Cloak held in some sort of container, Harry found four people tied to a large underwater statue. "Is one of these the thing I am supposed to get?" Harry asked one of the Merpeople "guarding" the "hostages."
Despite all that came out of his mouth at his questions a Merperson barked out, "Take your Hostage and go."

This confused Harry since tied to the statue were Ronald Weasley, Hermione Granger, Cho Chang and a girl Harry did not recognize. "Which one is my Hostage?" Harry had to ask since apart from interacting with Cho in the Ravenclaw dorms, Harry had never spent much time with the slightly older girl finding her to be a bully to some of the younger students not to mention rather full of herself and her looks. As for the pair of Gryffindors, Harry could not imagine how either of them could be his hostage since they were the two biggest pains he had to deal with in the school.

Ronald would constantly show up when Draco was not around and complain about Harry"s best friends saying things like Draco was a mini-Death Eater and was only after Harry for his money and fame. Ronald expected Harry to drop whatever he was doing at the time he arrived so he and Harry could hang out. The red-head constantly said he was Harry"s best friend no matter what Harry told him. Harry would wonder what Ronald"s idea of friendship was since all he wanted to do was just goof around and badmouth Harry"s real friends and even Harry"s favorite Quidditch Team. Always posting that the Chuddly Canons were the best team there was and all the others were cheating somehow to make them lose fearing their abilities.

Granger was if anything worse than Ronald. Since she would also show up and try to snatch Harry"s homework assignments away saying he was too dumb to understand them and would need her help to pass his classes. Something Harry found utterly ridiculous since he was ranked second in their year after Theo while Granger was ranked sixth in their year. The girl was always boasting that despite her sixth ranking in grades, she was the smartest witch of the year. Harry had to always bite his lip so he would not point out his adopted sister held the fourth highest rank in their year making her the smartest witch in their grade. The only reason Harry never brought up Daphne"s rank was, that he noticed that Granger tended to use the books she carried as bludgeons on people if they upset her.

Harry was surprised that Granger wanted to be his friend, especially after one time he had reported her to a teacher after he had left to go to the bathroom and had come back with her "helping him do his homework." Which he saw meant that she was erasing some of his paper so she could put in incorrect information thus making him get a lower grade if he had turned it in. Yet despite his reporting her making her have a week of detention, Granger still harrassed him.

What was worse than Ronald and Granger acting separately was when the pair worked in unison such as the time they literally dragged him into the Forbidden Corridor at the end of his first year and forced him to see what was hidden there. He had tried to get away from them but even when he gained access to a broom to fly out of the place, the pair had worked together to make him head further inside. What was worse was in one of the last rooms, Granger and he got trapped by some magical flames with the only way out was drinking some potions behind a logic puzzle. Harry thought that Granger had been given the answer to the puzzle beforehand since she snatched up one potion to drink that would allow her to head back to the entrance right as he worked it out for himself. She called out she would go and get the Headmaster leaving him to deal with what was deeper into the corridor.

Having no idea what to expect, but hoping to find another way out, Harry drank the potion and went through the black flames to find another chamber with Professor Quirrell looking over a strange mirror. Harry was only able to recognize the mirror as the Mirror of Erised thanks to some books he had read about his family history and have found out one of his ancestors had created the thing. Professor Quirrell had started on a long speech of how he was not surprised Harry was there or that he had worked out who he was. Harry had no idea what the Defense Professor was talking about and was completely shocked and disgusted as the man pulled down his purple turban to expose a face on the back of his head, a face that belonged to the spirit of the man who had killed Harry"s birth parents. Harry had to fight for his life and might have died if he had not discovered that his very touch was painful and hazardous to Quirrelmort. Which unfortunately led to Quirrell dying and Harry passing out.

What was worse than having killed a man, at least for Harry was during the end-of-term feast, Headmaster Dumbledore told the rest of the students what had happened and made it sound like Harry had willingly headed into the Forbidden Corridor with Ronald and Granger because the three of them were best friends. As if telling everyone he was friends with the pair of bullies was not bad enough, the Headmaster made a show of giving the three of them points for their actions in the corridor. It upset Harry that the man had used this action to prevent Slytherin House who had been about to win the House Cup lose to Gryffindor since the Headmaster gave all the points to that House. Many students and staff gave angry shouts at his actions not only for doing it right before the Cup was to be rewarded but also due to the old fool giving Harry"s points to Gryffindor rather than Ravenclaw.

During the summer between Harry"s first and second years at Hogwarts the Headmaster had to face an inquiry over his actions regarding the House Cup. Harry"s adopted parents also charged Granger and Ronald for forcing him down into the Forbidden Corridor and were furious when the charges were either dropped or swept under the rug somehow.

During Harry"s second year he not only had to deal with Granger and Ronald still acting like they were his friends, but he had to contend with Ronald"s little sister who appeared to have a crush on him, and Quirrell"s replacement Mr. Lockhart. Harry unterly refused to call the man a Professor since he was an idiot and even after some simple reading of the man"s books one could find them filled with inaccuracies. Or at least the parts of the book that did not deal with the man himself which considering over four-fifths of the book were just about Lockhart"s likes, dislikes, and anything else about himself the man decided to put in, Harry saw the best use for the man"s books were paper weights or target practice.

Things took a turn on Samhain where after the Hogwarts Halloween feast, as Harry went back to Ravenclaw Tower with his Housemates they were stopped in a first-floor corridor where a message about the Chamber of Secrets being opened had been written on the wall. Right beside the message hung the body of Mr. Filch"s cat, Mrs. Norris. That night Harry did some research into the Chamber recalling having read something about it years ago. His research led him back to the legend about the Chamber of Secrets and how it had been created by an Anti-Muggle Salazar Slytherin as a means to keep Muggleborns out of Hogwarts. Harry found this strange since he had gained some Slytherin Family books due to his defeat of the last Lord of the family when his parents died. According to the books, Salazar had been a Half-blood with a Magical mother and a Muggle, or as the book referred to it Untouched, father. From Salzar"s own journals, the man said he had loved both his parents dearly so Harry could not figure out why he would grow up to target Muggles unless it was a reaction to the Witch Hunts which were taking place around that time.

Harry also began to hear a strange disembodied voice which seemed to come from the walls themselves around this time. When he brought it up to his sister and Draco they had reasoned that it might have to do with one of Harry"s magical abilities such as his All-Speech which was starting to come out. They did have him share his concerns with Professor Flitwick considering he heard the voice saying it was hungry and looking to eat something, just in case the creature got out from the inside of the walls and attacked someone.

A strange thing did happen around this time with Granger somehow managing to get Professor Binns"s attention to ask him to tell everyone about the Chamber of Secrets. Harry was annoyed by the "history and legend" that the only Ghost Professor gave about Salazar Slytherin which was nothing like what Harry had rediscovered in his research about the man recently. Besides Granger somehow getting Binns"s attention, Ronald started on his diatribe against Draco when he "hung out" with Harry saying that Harry"s friend was the Heir of Slytherin and was trying to dispose of the Muggles in the castle just like "his and Harry"s other friend Hermione." Knowing the red-head"s Anti-Slytherin beliefs, Harry never even considered sharing that since the attack that killed his parents, he was considered the Lord of the Slytherin family which meant that there would be no Heir of Slytherin at Hogwarts.

Around the Yule, Harry learned that Granger and Ronald had received some detentions for trying to sneak into the Slytherin Common Room by using some Polyjuic Potion. Despite the pair looking like members of the Slytherin House who had come back from the Yule Holiday, Hogwarts magic had sensed they were not real members of the House nor connected to anyone inside at the time so alarms had gone off. The Greengrasses and Professor Flitwick had to file charges against the Headmaster again as he tried to make Harry serve detentions with Ronald and Granger for trying to sneak into the Slytherin Common Room, even though Harry had gone home for the holidays to attend the Greengrass Yule Ball that year.

Harry was also summoned to the Hospital wing after a double attack from the Monster of Slytherin petrified the Prefect from his House, Penelope Clearwater, and Granger. yet Harry was brought to see Granger rather than Prefect Clearwater. The Headmaster had been waiting for him along with Ronald as the old bastard told both students that Hermione had been attacked and found with a crumpled note in her hand and a mirror asking if either Ronald or Harry knew anything about it. Harry could only scoff wondering why he would know anything about what the Know-Nothing-Know-It-All did which almost earned him a detention from the Headmaster until Harry had decided he had had enough and just left the room and headed back to his dorms.

Once again at the end of the year, Harry was forced to go on a life-threatening adventure as he was summoned to Mister Lockhart"s office and at wand-point was forced to join the man and Ron to find the Chamber of Secrets for some reason. Lockhart following Ronald had them go to the bathroom near where the words had been written about the Chamber being opened as well as Ronald"s creepy little sister being taken down to the Chamber. Ronald and Lockhart somehow knew about Harry"s All-Speech ability and had him open a pipe leading to the Chamber. Harry found out he was right about Lockhart when they found a large snakeskin in a hallway after getting out of the pipe causing the man to lose his nerve and try to attack both Harry and Ron only for his spell to backfire and cause a cave-in. Harry was trapped on the side closest to the Chamber while Ronald was on the other side of the blockage. He told Harry to go rescue his sister as he worked to clear the tunnel.

Harry had no choice but to head further in leading him to a confrontation with a spirit that came out of an enchanted book and Salazar"s familiar. The Familiar had obviously been enchanted since it did not respond to Harry despite, him holding the rank of Lord of the Slytherin family, nor did it respond to the name Salazar gave it, Betsy. To survive Harry had been forced to kill the thing only to face off against the spirit from the book. With some quick thinking and some reflexes he had gained after joining the Ravenclaw Quidditch team that year, Harry was able to destroy the book with one of Betsy"s fangs leading the spirit to die, or at least as much as a spirit could die. The spirit it seemed had been tied to Ginevra Weasley as she woke up after it had vanished as she confessed what she had done but what was worse increased the crush she had on him.

When Harry and the others got back to the main castle they were led to Professor McGongall"s office making Harry growl a little to see Headmaster Dumbledore back after the man had been told to step down after his actions towards Harry during his time at Hogwarts. It was at this time that Harry met Ronald"s parents with the mother pulling him into a too-tight hug and thanking him for saving her daughter and being "Ron"s friend." Harry so dearly wanted to explain he hated Ronald and that if he was friends with any of her kids it would be the Weasley Twins who at least treated him like everyone else not a hero like Ronald did.

After the Weasleys left, Harry was forced to remain and talk to the Headmaster as the man talked about the sword that had come out of the Sorting Hat that Harry had been forced to use to kill Betsy. The bastard tried to keep the sword but since he revealed it had once belonged to Godric Gryffindor who was Harry"s ancestor, Harry would not allow it. But before he could tell the old bastard this, Draco"s dad arrived and got on Dumbledore"s case for returning to Hogwarts after he had been ousted by the Governors. Harry missed what Dumbledore said in defense as he noticed a strange House Elf beside Lord Malfoy gesturing at him as if the Elf was playing charades. Harry could not figure out who the Elf was since he spent a lot of time over at Draco"s place and had met all the Malfoy family Elves but this one was new to him. The Elf appeared to be saying that the book that had enchanted Ginevra had come from Draco"s dad. Harry instantly distrusted the Elf as he turned back to Draco"s dad laying into the Headmaster who had somehow regained his post at the school.

At least that year when Harry was "rewarded" for the adventure he had been forced into taking part in the points were given to Ravenclaw House rather than Gryffindor. Harry also was given a special reward for service to the school which might have been cool if he had not had to share it with Ronald nor earned it by killing Besty when she had been enchanted to act against her true nature.

Harry"s third year at Hogwarts was not as exciting, thankfully, as the previous two had been. He did like the new Defense Professor who had informed him he was an old friend of Harry"s parents. Professor Lupin had shared that he had not gotten in contact with Harry before then since he was not sure if Harry would want to see him. Along with suffering some grief still over Harry"s parents" deaths thanks to one of their other old friends.

Ronald, Granger, and Ginevra were just as annoying as ever. Ginevra"s crush on him had increased after he had saved her and even the Mind Healer she had been sent to see after getting enchanted by the book from the previous year had done nothing to help her deal with her feelings towards him. Ronald and Granger, when they did not spend time complaining about each other"s pets did their best to convince Harry he needed to ask for a Re-Sort so he could come to join them in Gryffindor. Harry just did his best to ignore them and tried to spend as much time with Draco as he could since when the blonde was nearby Ronald at least stayed away from him.

Harry"s tactic of avoiding the annoying trio worked for the most part and he did not have any adventures that year. Near the end of the year, Ronald"s pet rat shocked everyone when it revealed they had been an Animagus all along when the rat returned to human form and killed Granger"s cat who had been targeting it all year round. What was more was the former rat was revealed to be Peter Pettigrew and had been the real secret Keeper who had allowed You-Know-Who to find Harry"s home as a baby. Peter was soon arrested and sent to Azkaban while the person who had been convicted of the crime, Sirius Black, was released. Harry met with Lord Black for a bit before the man was sent away to be healed after his long stint in the worst Magical Prison in the world finding out the man was his Godfather.

Harry had managed to avoid Ronald and Granger for the most part in his fourth year until his name came out of the Goblet of Fire as one of the Hogwarts Champions. According to some of Harry"s friends in Gryffindor, the pair were telling everyone they could that Harry was lying when he had said he had not put his name in. Even though Harry had also made a Magical Vow to say he had never put his name in the Goblet or wanted to take part in the tournament. Unfortunately, there was no way for Harry to back out even with his adopted parents or Sirius pulling him out due to him being underage due to a law that had been passed that said if someone"s name came out of the cup they had to compete in the tournament.

Since they could not help him get out of the tournament Richard and Samatha Greengrass worked together with Sirius to help Harry get ready for the task, even if it could be seen as cheating but they did not care since he was underage and needed all the help he could get. Not that he needed much help during his First Task since all he had to do was use his All-Speech to talk to the dragon guarding the clue he was meant to collect into letting him take it without a fight. The dragon hearing that there was an imposter egg in their nest actually scooped it out and handed it over to him without any issue.

But now Harry had to rescue a Hostage from the lake and the only people there were a girl he disliked from his own house, two of the students who constantly harassed him and bullied him, and a young girl who looked to be the younger sister of the Beauxbaton"s Champion. When the Merpeople explained that Ronald was his chosen Champion, Harry decided he was just not going to deal with it as he turned around and swam back to the surface. Maybe if he was lucky this would put him in last place so that when the last task took place he would be the last one to start giving the others to do the task since he had never wanted to take part in this tournament in the first place.

Notes:

As of right now, I do not have any plans to make this a full story but just a long one-shot. Though I have tried that before and changed my mind so you never know.
