The first mate is called John, he seems like a nice guy and according to the Ferryman he's the only other person North Wind doesn't try and bite. His laugh is contagious as when he makes a joke the kids can't help giving small laughs themselves. John got tasked with showing them around the ship so they know where to go and where they might want to learn. Mono seemed interested in the kitchens. They were introduced to chef Gordon while he was working on tonight's meal for the crew.
"Hope the new blood likes fish"
"Well they should be fine"
"Yeh Yeh" Gordon kneels down by Mono. " If ya liked I can show you some cool stuff to cook kid"
Mono's eyes widened and he nods the excitement getting the better of him.
Gordon gave a hearty laugh and patted the boys head. "Well, we can get to showing you the ropes soon lad, hope you won't mind an early rise!"
"Seeya at dinner Gordon!" john ushers the kids form the kitchen so the chef can continue working.
"If one of you like you could tag along with me to help with keeping an eye on the ship"
"Oo oo! I wanna do that!" Raine jumps up and down.
"I could always use the extra hands" John laughs.
They start heading to the lower parts of the ship they see little things run around the ship carrying various items.
"WHat are those?" RK asks.
"They're called Nomes, The ferryman calls them sprites that show up in various places and help people at sea or on land. They are skittish around new people..." Johns eyebrows raised when the nomes almost flocked around RK. "but they seem to see something in you that they like"
RK giggled and picked up one of the nomes to hug them, the nome made a happy noise before they were set back down and the other nomes scurried off.
"Ok, we're getting close to where our Janitor works, he's pretty grouchy but if we walk on by then we should be ok" John comments as they keep going on with the tour.
They did end up encountering the janitor, a half blind old man who knew his way around the ship because in his words. "I worked on the maw and that place felt like a goddang maze"
"Well kids, this is Roger, he works in the lower deck with the nomes"
"them little sprites can do alot but an engine they can't fix" roger grumbles.
Six stood there wide eyed "H-Hey!"
Roger went stock still for a moment. "I know that voice" He puts on his glasses and looked down to the young girl. "Six!? Issat you!?"
"Yea yea!" Six jumped up and down. The other kids were surprised to see such enthusiasm from Six as the little girl was pulled off of the ground and into a bear hug.
"THAT'S the six you kept boasting about?"
"Haha she sure is!" He ruffles her hair and laughed. "She was such a spitfire sometimes I didn know what to do with her"
Six points down to Mono
Roger looks down ot him" He a friend of yours kiddo?"
Six nods.
"Well c'mere little man I wanna get a good look at ya"
Mono looks around before taking a hesitant step forward. He felt nervous with extra eyes on him then felt a hand ruffle his hair.
"You know how to pick good company Six, good on ya" He sets her down. "now I gotta get back to work, hope you visit again soon Kiddo I'd love ot hear what you been up to"
Six waves back as they go back to the tour.
"I didn't know you could say anything" Raine says.
Six shrugged.
"Small words"
"So you knew that guy before?"
"She knew him on this big old ship"
Mono looked at Six, and she would look back before shaking her head, he nods in understanding. " It's ok...Don't have to tell" He rasps and held her hand, seeing her smile and he smiles in return.
The tour of the rest of the ship went pretty smoothly before they were brought back to the Ferryman at his quarters.
"So, how was the tour?" He asks as he takes a puff from his pipe.
"It actually went pretty well, Mono wants to be in the kitchens to learn with Gordan"
"I wanna hang with Mr. John so I can help keep an eye on things"
"I wanna be with the nomes if that's ok" Rk requests.
Ferryman looks at Six. "And you young one?"
"She's gonna be around, she seems interested in the kitchens but also working with Roger"
"Well, so long as you all are putting in the effort to do work here yer gonna do fine, but if any of ye slack off we'll toss ya overboard" The ferryman threatens, only to laugh at the scared reaction he got from the children. "Nah, I won't do that to ye, we'll dock at the nearest place and I'll have ye start life there. but I can see yer small group are determined to stick together, so things will be just fine. Now off to the dinin area with ya" He waves a hand and the children leave.
"You really are a bleedin heart Sir"
"Aye, but those kids got nothin to go back to, so why not give them a chance" He scratched the back of his birds head, said bird leaning into the touch.
"They seem like a nice bunch"
"Aye, now you get goin too boy, don't want any food fights happening" He chuckles as John leaves him to his business. He looks to his map and there is something circled to one side of the map.
