Chapter Text
”Master Luke!” Khy called, stepping into the temple with one of the younger students on her back. “I’ll walk the kids back to the village by myself today.”
”Are you sure?” Luke furrowed his brow. “Can you handle all of them?”
”Leno promised to help me out, right bud?” She jostled the kid on her back, eliciting a laugh from them. “Besides, Mister Mando’s supposed to be back tonight, right? If you’re not here when he gets back you know he’s gonna worry.” She shook her head, curls bouncing slightly around her face.
Luke smiled slightly. “Thank you, padawan. I appreciate your attention to my love life.” He rolled his eyes.
”You two are cute.” She shrugged. “And you’re like my second pair of parents.” She smiled back. “Speaking of which, I told my mom and Blaize I’d be staying with them tonight so he can be helmet free for a night.” She offered. “But if he didn’t bring me any of that Mandalorian booze he promised me then it’ll be the only time without me you’ll get.” She teased.
”You are horrible.” Luke laughed, shaking his head. He stood up from where he’d been studying a text, walking towards Khy. “Khy, you know that stuff will knock you flat on your tail. You need to start building up a tolerance.”
”That’s why I need the booze!” She called with a grin, starting towards the door. “Tell Mister Mando I say welcome home.” She said, leaving the temple.
”Dad!” Rey called, rushing into the room practically as soon as Khy left. Finn followed behind her with Grogu in his arms. “Was Khy joking? Is Buir coming home tonight?” She asked excitedly.
”That was the plan.” Luke smiled slightly, looking down at his kids. Finn was catching up to him height wise. “Of course it’s been a few days since we’ve talked, but he hasn’t told me anything’s changed.” Luke said, moving to take Grogu from Finn.
”What do you think he’ll say about my growth spurt?” Finn asked with a grin, straightening his shoulders. “You can’t see all this on the holos.” Rey snorted, earning a glare from her brother.
”You may want to be in position to fight.” Luke teased. “He might think you’re a stranger trying to attack.”
Rey scoffed. “Like Finn could take Buir in a fight.”
”Rey–“ Luke said warningly.
”I don’t want to fight Buir.” Finn argued.
”Because you couldn’t. You don’t even want to get training armor.” Rey stuck her tongue out.
“Because I’m focusing more on my force abilities. You can barely lift Grogu–“ Rey blew a raspberry at her brother.
”Kids!” Luke exclaimed. There was no malice in any of it. The kids adored each other, despite their differing opinions and choices for training. “You know me and your Buir love how excited you get about our cultures. But I don’t want him to come back to a second Jedi-Mandalorian war starring our own children who, I will remind you, are both.”
”Yes dad.” They both said, slightly out of sync, heads lowering slightly.
Luke smiled, reaching out to cup Finn’s cheek. “You’re both so talented and wonderful.”
”Dad!” Grogu exclaimed.
”Of course you too, Grogu.” He assured the boy with a smile. “Okay, now you two go wash up before your dad gets home and sees how dirty I let you get.” Finn and Rey laughed as they raced each other back towards their bathroom.
Din took in a deep breath as soon as he stepped onto Yavin. The air seemed sweeter, even through his helmet, though he was sure that was just him projecting.
”Buir!” Rey and Finn shouted, running towards their father. Both of the young teens threw themselves at Din, wrapping their arms around his torso. Luke and Grogu walked up to them.
Din chuckled softly, returning the embraces. “Who are you and what have you done with my foundlings?” He asked. He took Rey’s face in hand, pressing his helmeted forehead to hers. “Ad’ika, you’ve been practicing the forms I showed you, haven’t you?” He asked softly.
”Every day! I wish you would have let me come to Mandalore.” Rey said as he pulled away from her.
”Next time, Rey.” He promised. He turned to Finn. “And you,” He shook his head slightly before taking Finn’s face in hand and pressing their foreheads together. “How did you get so tall in just a few months?” He demanded, Finn laughed loudly. “Is that a Force thing? Are you stretching yourself with jetii magic?”
”No, buir.” Finn shook his head, grinning. They pulled apart, Din’s hand still on Finn’s cheek “But I’ve been working on some of the flowers in the back. And I’m starting to get the hang of healing!”
”Healing?” Din looked to Luke, concern coming through the vocoder.
”Small cuts and bruises for the most part.” Luke assured him. “We’re being safe, don’t worry.” He promised.
”I can’t help but worry, ner kar’ta.” Din said softly.
Luke closed the distance between them, handing a fidgeting Grogu over to Din. “Buir!” The exclaimed joyfully.
“Oh Luke…” Din breathed.
”We’ve been working on it while you were gone.” Luke grinned. “That’s not it. Grogu, who else is here?”
”Dad, Fi, Rey!” Grogu shouted, grinning proudly up at Din.
”He has a bit of trouble with n’s so far, but–“ Luke shrugged.
“I am so proud.” Din said through a choked voice. He pressed his forehead against Grogu’s, hugging the boy close to his chest. “I missed you all so much.” He said.
Luke put his hands on either side of Din’s helmet. “Khy is staying with her moms tonight and Artoo is getting a tuneup. It’s just clan tonight.” He lifted the helmet off Din's head, pressing a kiss to the Beskar before he leaned up to kiss his husband.
Rey made a gagging noise, Finn smacked her arm lightly. “You’re so childish.” He stuck his tongue out.
”I’m sorry I don’t like seeing our parents make out in front of us.” Rey rolled her eyes.
”Stop fighting or we’ll make out more.” Din called. He put Grogu down, the little boy waddling over to his siblings.
”Gross!” Rey groaned, but they were laughing nonetheless.
Luke wrapped his arms around Din, burying his face in his neck. “Four months is too long.” He muttered, grateful for the stolen moment while the children sufficiently distracting each other.
”Entirely.” Din agreed, his hand carding through Luke’s hair. “Next time we need to plan better.”
”It’s not our faults things kept coming up.” Luke insisted. “First the trade agreement got botched so you had to stay an extra month, then Khy got sick and I had to postpone our trip.”
”I know, I know, we both have responsibilities to our peoples.” Din huffed. “But what about my responsibility to you?” His voice was soft as he pressed a kiss just below Luke’s ear, hands trailing lightly down his waist. “I know I could talk to you, but I can’t warm your bed from Mandalore.” He murmured, lips never leaving Luke’s skin.
”Don’t worry.” Luke said, mischief in his eyes. “Graven took care of that for you.” He teased.
“Luke, our children are right there.” Din said, voice low. “But I can send them inside if you intend to keep saying things like that.”
”Promises, promises.” Luke grinned, pulling away from the embrace to kiss Din again. “We all missed you so much.”
”I missed you too.” He said softly. “I got permission to stay home for the next four months.” He grinned.
“That’s perfect.” Luke smiled back. “C’mon, I’m sure the kids have things to show you.” He led Din back to where Finn and Rey were now sparring.
”Buir! Look at how high I can jump–“
”I can jump just as high!”
“I don’t like being away from you all for so long.” Din sighed, laying back in bed.
“Well, if the welcome is always this warm, I’m not sure I mind it.” Luke chuckled, laying his head on Din’s chest. “I’m kidding, of course.” He said just as quickly. “I wish you could stay forever.” He said softly.
”I just wish we could always be together.” Din responded with a sigh. Some times were easier than others. When the temple was mostly just their foundlings it wasn’t so difficult. But as they found more force sensitive children and turned the village on Yavin into a town, it got more difficult. “What else have I missed? That the kids won’t tell me about.”
”Well…” Luke cracked a smile. “Khy said you better have brought her back some Mandalorian booze or else she’s never gonna give us a moment of peace again.”
Din chuckled. “I’ll give it to Jenzeh instead then. I’m sure her and Blaize will find a good use for it.”
Luke laughed softly. “Rey’s been begging for us to get her practice armor. She really wants to start training in the Mandalorian way alongside her Jedi lessons, but I’m a bit worried it will be too much for her.”
”While I’m home we can try switching between days.” Din suggested. “I’ll train her one day, you do the next. Or mornings are for Jedi, afternoons are for Mandalorian.” Din shrugged.
Luke smiled. “We’ll talk to her about it tomorrow.” He pressed a kiss to Din’s shoulder. “Finn’s been reading more about Mandalorian history and culture.” Luke said. “I think he’s looking for a way to stay connected with you while you’re gone. I’m not sure he’d want to train or swear the creed, but he loves you and looks up to you so much. I think he’s afraid of–”
“He will never disappoint me.” Din cut Luke off. “I’ll talk to him. Make sure he knows.”
Luke nodded, smiling slightly. “Oh, and…” He let out a breath, shaking his head. “He asked me how we fell in love.”
”Yeah?” Din let out a laugh. “What did you tell him?”
”I gave him a slightly condensed version of the story.” Luke shrugged. “He was asking about how we knew for sure it was love.” He looked up at his husband. Din furrowed his brow slightly. “And the Dameron boy, Poe, the other day he stopped by to ask me about Mandalorian and Jedi courting rituals.”
”Oh.” Din sighed heavily. “And you think Finn…”
”Finn looks at him like he hung the stars in the sky.” Luke chuckled shaking his head. “One day, after a rain storm, Finn comes home, flushed from head to toe, barely talking. And he’s in a new jacket I’ve never seen before. So I ask him where he gets it–“
”Poe?” Din asked.
”The Dameron boy offered it to him when it was raining. Told Finn it looked better on him.” Luke laughed softly. “I think when Poe came by he was looking for our permission to date Finn.”
”Finn can make his own choices.” Din said gruffly. “But Poe’s a good kid mostly.” He entwined his fingers with Luke’s. “He’s a handsome boy too. Not as good looking as Finn, but–“
”No one’s as good looking as Finn.” Luke responded. He smiled. “Rey’s been starting to show off in the village too. She’d kill me if she knew I was saying this, but I’ve noticed she normally does it around a few specific girls…”
”Do you have love on the mind?” Din asked with a chuckled. “Next thing you’ll say Grogu is getting married.”
”My love,” Luke let out a breath, propping himself up to better look at Din. “It’s been ten years.”
”I know.” Din responded. “How could I forget? I cursed out the counsel to let me come back early so I would make it.”
Luke laughed softly. “It isn’t till tomorrow. You could have stayed another day.”
”I wanted to be home with you when it became ten years.” Din responded, pressing a kiss to Luke’s forehead.
”You’re a hopeless romantic.” Luke said, leaning up to catch Din’s lips in a kiss. “Marry me again.” He requested against his husband’s lips.
Din laughed. “How many times will this be, mesh’la? Fifty? One hundred?”
“We are one when together.” Luke buried his face in Din’s neck. He had learned the words in Mando’a for their second anniversary, so now whenever they renewed their vows, they did it fully in Mando’a.
”We are one when a part.” Din responded, carding his fingers through Luke’s hair.
”We will share all.” Luke held him tighter.
“We will raise warriors.” Din smiled.
“Happy anniversary, Din.”
“Happy anniversary, Luke.”
