Work Text:

The world became an increasingly dangerous place, and soon, the people turned on those who had powers, all of them, good or evil, blaming them for the destruction, for not doing enough, for creating the calamities in the first place. "No Superheroes, No Supervillains!" they reasoned and chanted through the streets. After the civil protests, a suspiciously efficient capture of all known non-humans was launched worldwide at the same time, as if it had been planned a long time ago. It had to.

Worse, no one saw it coming. Not Tony Stark with all his intel, not the Black Widow in all her paranoia, not even Professor Xavier who really should have heard them coming… They had not been prepared, nor had they expected such a treason from the people they swore to protect.

The "I told you do so!" Magneto bellowed from his cell were of no comfort, although everyone secretly believed he would be the first to escape. Not all the powered people had been captured, of course. Clint, surprisingly, was in the wind. Spiderman was too good at protecting his identity, and as slippery as an eel. Good on him. Good kid like him didn't deserve to be thrown in this cold, clinical jail.

Steve could see rows upon rows of cells, each adapted to hold specific powers. His transparent walls might look to be made of Plexiglas, but it absorbed his blows better than a punching ball. Similarly, Magneto had no hold over it, Tony had no lock to pick, the guy with the claws could slice through them without being able to cut his way out. It was... frustrating. They were all purely and simply stuck.

Steve's only silver lining was that they hadn't caught Bucky. His friend had fought tooth and nail, while Steve did his best to help him, and Bucky had gotten away. Steve often wondered where he was, and what he was up to. He had to be hiding, of course. He was too well known.

So it was like a punch in the gut when the trap above was opened and another prisoner was dropped in a free cube several feet away, between the blue guy and another that looked empty, but which he knew contained an invisible dame.

"Bucky!" Steve called, gesturing wildly at him.

Bucky stood and smiled a bloody smile at him.

"Hey, punk! Miss me?"

Steve rolled his eyes.

"You okay? How did they catch you?"

Were they that good at finding those with powers? Was there nowhere to hide anymore? How long had he been locked up? A month? Two?

"I let them," Bucky shrugged, while others butted in to compliment his idiocy.

Bucky waved them away in annoyance.

"I have a plan," he defended himself.

"Yeah, and it's going splendidly ," Tony mocked from behind him.

"While you lot were all here sitting on your asses, I made some new friends," Bucky continued, ignoring the laughter. "They're sending someone ahead to see what's really going on, because the media are spouting a load of bullcrap to the public outside, and when they realize I was telling the truth, my new buddies will help us out of here, you'll see."

Bucky sat, arms crossed, refusing to say anymore. Steve trusted him, although the others who had heard him were divided. After all, if the most powerful people here present could not help themselves, then who could?

Later, a trap opened nearby and yet another person was dropped in a free cube next to his. The woman looked...normal when she picked herself up, but her eyes grew wide as she saw all the other prisoners gathered there. Their eyes met as she scanned the room and she gasped. Then, she seemed to make an inventory of the prisoners, pressing her hands against the Plexiglas, nose touching its surface. She soon found Bucky, who waved at her. She waved back with a smile.

"You're the rescue, then?" Steve asked in a low voice, unsure if they were being monitored or not.

"Bucky can't keep a secret to save his life, can he?" she answered, rolling her eyes. "But that would be correct. I'm Hermione. I'd say it's a pleasure to meet you, but…" she waved her hand at all the prison-cubes around them.

"I'm Steve, but I have a feeling you know that?"

"Oh, yes. The news of your death reached even our ears. We didn't know… we never would have suspected what was happening in the...erm… normal world, if it wasn't for your friend."

"There's a non-normal world?" Steve asked, amused that he wasn't part of it because he was definitely not normal.

"Yes. Somehow Bucky managed to weasel his way in. We were simply going to toss him out, but he told us what was happening to you people. Just because you're… more than human. It's… I have no words. It keeps happening… it's why our kind is hiding." she sighed, sounding defeated until she took a long piece of polished wood out from under her sleeve. "Don't worry. We'll help you out. All of you."

Steve was about to protest, to tell her she could not destroy the clear walls, no matter how thin they seemed, and certainly not with a stick. However, she waved the stick, said a few words, and next thing he knew, the wall she had been facing transformed into sand that fell in a pile at her feet.

When cheers and claps went up, Steve realized they'd had an audience. Hermione smiled, then took out a mirror from her pocket and spoke into it.

"Harry? I'm in. Everything he said is true. Worse, actually. Can you locate me?"

"Done. Portkeys are being activated as we speak."

Whatever that meant, dozens more people appeared out of thin air. Some wore colourful robes, others pointy hats, all waved a stick and said magic words to free the prisoners in various ways. Magic… magic ? Like fairies, sorcerers and witches? Sure explained the pointy hats. Hermione freed him since he was nearby, and soon, Bucky joined him, slinking an arm around his shoulders.

"Got it yet?" Bucky asked with a shit-eating grin.

"How the heck did you find these people, Buck? Did you know about...magic?" Steve asked him, noticing Hermione eavesdropping not so discreetly.

" I didn't," Bucky said, so Steve guessed that HYDRA did. Good thing they got rid of them already. "But it's a good thing I checked it out, eh?"

It sure was. The whole secret underground warehouse was evacuated and magicked away to a safe place Hermione said. One where they could hide, rest, stay or leave with their help to any place of their choosing.

"You're not our prisoners. From this day on, we're allies. Friends," Hermione said earnestly, offering him her hand.

These people were powerful, and so feared at one point they had decided to hide instead of warring against the "normal" people, even though he was sure they could have subdued them. With those shared values, Steve knew he could trust them and that he would get along with them without any trouble.

"Friends," Steve agreed with a smile, shaking her hand.
