as long as we still can

Summary:

As long as we're not hanging.

Notes:

Seventh and last entry for “BruAbba Unzipped Week”; free day. I once again had no idea what to do for this one, it came last minute and yes, last part of my previous angsty ass fic.

Tagged as mature because no children in my space, thank you.

Title from “Gallowdance” by Lebanon Hanover.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

You don't really forget about them but, they don't linger in the back of your head after a while, your life moves on and so do you. There's happy memories of your time together but you share a bed with someone else now and you love them, you absolutely adore and cherish them but there are times when you can't help but think about what could've happened.

And Bruno Bucciarati knows that all too well.

Prosciutto and him are buying their Christmas gifts at a local mall, a pair of socks for Narancia and some cool looking sunglasses for Ghiaccio, that lilac dress Trish has been mentioning for a while now, mouthwash for Formaggio, the list is long.

It's only when he has to stop by to buy something for Giorno when he sees him coming out of Hot Topic holding the hand of someone he knows somewhat well. Holding plenty of large shopping bags and sharing something in a Starbucks cup with two straws.

It's probably the first time he's seen him smile that wide. It's good to know that the light being his eyes still shines after all, perhaps a lot more than it ever did. They sit on a table in the food aisle and share a kiss, before Risotto heads to the same store as him holding a piece of paper with scribbles all over it.

Bruno completely ignores his heavy presence as he walks through the store, he's supposed to find a couple things here but he can't stop thinking about what he witnessed. It's only when they're in the same aisle when he hears Risotto speak to Abbacchio in such a loving way his stomach turns. He doesn't even realise he entered the store right behind him.

“This one, mi caro?” Risotto grabs a bottle of body wash and hands it to Abbacchio who gives him yet another kiss.

“You always get it right, cuore mio. ” Abbacchio answers, he heads out of the shop after whispering something inside Risotto's ear, that causes him to steal a kiss and to grab something underneath his coat. “HONEY, NOT HERE—”

Non riesco a toglierti le mani di dosso, lo sai amore mio. ” Risotto says. Abbacchio leaves back to their table at the food aisle, Bruno reads his lips as something he would rather not think about at all.

Bruno grabs Giorno’s gift but before he heads to pay for it, Risotto speaks.

“And to think you let that go.” Risotto says. He takes an assortment of products on his arms. Bruno swallows, that's unnecessary. This entire interaction is unnecessary.

“I had my reasons.” Bruno says. I still have them.

“Merry Christmas though, I hope you and the gang have a great time.” Risotto responds. He pays for his stuff and Bruno freezes.

“You too.” It's all he manages to say. He sees him leave to meet Abbacchio.

That's right. They won't come. They don't celebrate holidays together anymore.

Bruno crosses out Abbacchio's name on the list.

He meets up with Prosciutto in the parking lot and they share a cupcake. Prosciutto shows him the hanging mistletoe on top of their heads, they share a kiss that tastes like strawberry frosting.

He feels cozy and he completely forgets about them for a bit, until he sees Abbacchio getting on a motorcycle with Risotto who is at the back holding on to dear life with his thighs and 6 large bags hanging from his biceps.

They used to go on rides like that. Bruno always at the front because Abbacchio wanted to take care of him that way.

And now he's the one at the front, he's the one being taken care of, Bruno flashes a warm smile and Prosciutto rolls his eyes as he sees them leave. As usual, he lights a cigarette and takes a hit before getting in the driver's seat.

“They deserve one another.” Prosciutto says. Bruno comes back from his flashback after he speaks. “The pot found its lid.” Disgusting. He thinks.

Bruno laughs.

“I guess so.” Bruno answers. Prosciutto is right though, he forces logic and common sense on him most times, not like he needs it anyway but it's helpful. Especially for the heartache that returned suddenly after being okay for a while.

Prosciutto cups Bruno's face, leaving the cigarette aside. “Hey, I found the lid of mine too.” He says. Bruno's eyes open wide.

“I’m sorry about…my sudden…” Bruno says. But Prosciutto stops the car in the middle of the street.

“Bruno, my dear, you're fine.” Prosciutto answers. Bruno smiles. He remembers that time he asked him out, it was out of theblue and he wasn't sure if attending to said date since he was still with Abbacchio, problems here and there but still together . “I understand.” I've been there.

“Can we get home so we can talk, darling?” Bruno asks. Prosciutto nods and takes the wheel.

“I thought I'd never see him again. I didn't want to see him again.” Bruno says. It hurts but that's done for, they're done for and Abbacchio seems happy about it.

“I think we can agree on that. Although I did have a heavy reason on why I…left Risotto.” Prosciutto fixes himself a whiskey and hands one to Bruno, who chugs it in one go. “It was too much for me.”

“Yeah. Things with Leone were…not fulfilling anymore.” Bruno takes a moment to think about it, he was no longer happy about many things so why is he feeling like this right now? He made the right choice, he knew he made the right choice until he saw him kissing another man.

“We’ll get through, amore mio.” Prosciutto says. He hugs Bruno and the latter kisses him as a yes. Everyone has setbacks and this won't be the first one, but he has his lover to hang on to.

“We will.” Bruno remarks. Making a mental note that it was for the better and that he won't go to that mall until he heals the mostly closed wound staining his chest.
