Chapter Text
Hinata’s POV
I walked on the path. The whole area was dead quiet. By this point, I didn’t need the map. I have been here almost every weekend. Today was different though. Today was the anniversary of his death. 10 years. Wow. I walked up to the headstone, tears threatening my eyes. I sat down in front of the big block of marble. After laying the flowers down, I put my face in my hands, unable to control the tears. It had been 10 years without him.
“I miss you. I wish you would come back. I know that won’t happen though. So instead, I sit here talking to your body, though your soul is long gone. It’s better than nothing I guess. Hey, you owe me a volleyball match. So when I get there, you better have your uniform on. God, I feel stupid just talking to the air. I can live with the kidnapping. I can live with the rape, but I have found it hard to live with your death. You know, I still have nightmares about the whole thing. I can still see every vivid detail. We got a letter. Kuroo got involved in a gang at the prison. Killed a bunch of people, including two guards. It was crazy. All over the news. Kuroo wrote to us. He got the death penalty for the ‘riot’. He has asked that we go. We talked about it, and we decided to go. He is supposed to be executed today. Serves him right. I just. I miss you.”
I hear footsteps behind me, and then a hand finds its way to my shoulder. I look up. Kenma stands above me, a small child in his arms. Kenma lowers the boy to the ground.
“Hey, baby? Do you wanna talk to your uncle Lev?”
He nods and then opens his mouth. “What is heaven like uncle Lev? I bet there are lots of dinosaurs all around and lots of cake. I hope I can go to heaven to meet you someday! Daddies say that we can’t take the train but I think they are lying. They also say they named me after you, but that’s not true. You were named after me. Thank you for being my daddies’ friend.”
Kenma pulled something out of his pocket. A small little rainbow flag.
“You absolutely cannot put that on his grave!” I yelled out.
“Why not? We all know he was secretly gay,” Kenma said trying to contain his laughter. I shot him a look and he rolled his eyes. Kenma pulled out a new tiny flag. It was black and white stripes. An upside-down, rainbow “V” sat in the middle of the flag. He stuck the pole into the ground. I stood up and brushed off my pants. I grabbed Kenma’s hand and we walked back to the car together.
“Tobio, we won’t be gone for long. But there are snacks in the fridge for Lev and-”
“And his juice needs to be room temperature before he will drink it. Yes, I know. You give me this speech.” Tobio gave a light smirk before walking out into the dining room. A sad smile crosses my face as I go up the stairs. Slowly opening the door, I find Kenma standing in the mirror. He is wearing a nice, white button-up shirt. His black tie matches his pants and shoes. He looks at me and sighs. I open the door more and step in. He walks away from the mirror. I sit down next to him on the bed. My hands find their way to his blonde hair. I plant a kiss on his cheek, feeling the wetness.
“Back in high school, he was the love of my life. Now, I am going to watch him die. This was never a part of the plan.”
I lay my head on his shoulder. “I know sweetheart. Do you know what else wasn’t a part of the plan? Our meeting. Us getting married. Us having a kid. Sometimes, you have to stray from the path to find what you are really looking for. By leaving behind the disaster he caused, you found me and I found you. Things in life never work out as planned. That’s why you just let life do its thing. It will lead you to exactly what you need.”
Kenma stayed quiet for a bit before speaking softly. “Do you think in another life, Kuroo and I would still be together but we would be happy?”
I poked his cheek. “Sure. And in that lifetime, I would be 6’2 and a professional volleyball player. Let’s focus on the life we have now. Today will be hard for you. Not so much for me, but I am here for you. If you want to go, I will be by your side. If not, we can go get McDonald’s or something.”
Kenma stood up and grabbed my hand. Together, we walked down the stairs and out the front door.
After a very thorough search, we were let into the prison. We were walked to a small room with a window. A couple of other people were here, but I believe they were mainly reporters. We stood by the window.
A few minutes go by and the door behind the window opens. A guard walks through the door, followed by two more guards and a rough-looking man in orange. Kuroo’s long hair was now shaved. Age did not do him well. I felt Kenma’s hand tighten around mine. I looked at him. His eyes filled with fear. I knew at that moment, he was reliving everything.
Kuroo’s eyes lifted from the ground and met Kenma’s. Kuroo let out a smile. “Kenma baby. I’m glad you came. Man, I’ve waited 10 years to see you again.”
Kenma’s eyes changed. Anger replaced the fear. I looked back at Kuroo as his eyes locked on me. “Kenma, sweetheart, I didn’t ask you to bring company. Your little boyfriend SHOULD HAVE STAYED AT HOME!” He lunged towards the glass. A guard grabbed him by the shoulders and pulled him back. He huffed and put his eyes back down to the ground.
We watched as he was strapped to the table.
“Any last words you would like recorded, Mr. Testuro?”
There was a pause. His mouth opened slightly before speaking.
“I hope he treats you better than I ever could, Kenma. You deserve everything good in life.”
Kenma turned his head away to hide the tears. I pulled him into a tight hug and watched as they drew the curtains shut on the execution. Kuroo Tetsuro no longer existed in the world. Kenma Kozume could now live without being in fear. Kenma and I together could now finish our healing in peace.
