Of All Dreams

Summary:

Kaminari has had some weird dreams before but this one takes the cake. It was nothing but white as far as the eye could see which was weird considering he was just stopping a bank robbery. What"s even weirder is that All Might of all people is here even though the man had been six feet under for five years. Gosh he can"t wait to tell his friends all about this when he wakes up.

I understand that this sounds a lot like a crack fic but I 100% assure you that it is not!

Notes:

This fic is based on the song "Let Me Be Surprised" which was in the movie All Dogs Go To Heaven. It"s a good movie so I highly recommend watching it if you ever have the time. I hope you enjoy!

Work Text:

“Ugh, where the hell am I?” Kaminari examined his surroundings. It was nothing but white as far as the eye could see. Looking down he saw he was still wearing his hero costume. He had no idea what was happening and the last thing he remembered was arresting some bank robbers and then waking up here. Wherever here even is.

It was strange to be honest. He was pretty sure he just blacked out and he was having some weird dream. Things were only getting weirder when he realized he was standing on… Are these clouds? Seriously, what the hell is going on here!? He’s been wandering this strange place for a solid minute calling the names of his teammates but to no avail. Eventually he just sat down and hoped he’d wake up soon because he really didn’t like this dream.

A voice could be heard and Kaminari immediately shot up. He recognized that voice. He’s not sure from where but he recognized that voice.

“Hello? Who’s there? What the hell kind of dream is this!?” Kaminari exasperated while grasping at his hair. A bright flash of light appeared on his left side, temporarily blinding him. Putting his hands up to block the light he failed to notice the thin figure clad in white robes approaching him until the mysterious man suddenly grabbed his arm. Kaminari looked up, fully prepared to fight the man until he saw his face. There stood All Might, in the flesh.

“A-ALL MIGHT?!” Kaminari practically screamed. Why… why was All Might of all people in his dream? The man was dead. He had been dead for well over five years so why was he suddenly appearing in Kaminari’s dreams. And why him? He barely even spoke to All Might when he was alive let alone while dead. God, he was gonna have to tell his friends all about this when he wakes up.

“Kaminari my boy! We’ve been expecting you”, All Might said. Kaminari raised an eyebrow at that statement because what the fuck. Why was All Might expecting him? What did he mean by we?

“Expecting me? And who’s we? What’s going on?” Kaminari looked at the man in slight confusion but he only received a chuckle in response.

“All will be explained in due time Kaminari.” All Might held out his hand and a spark appeared. It swirled and gave way to an entrancing golden portal. Wasn"t All Might’s quirk strength or something? Last time Kaminari checked the former hero couldn’t make portals out of thin fucking air.

The man stepped through the portal, disappearing from Kaminari’s view. For a moment Kaminari just stood there contemplating whether he should follow or not. Because on one hand what the fuck, but on the other hand maybe he’ll wake up once he steps through. Shrugging his shoulders he decided to go through. Out of all the things he expected to see, a literal paradise was not on that list.

People dressed in white robes all around a city of sorts. Pristine water falls, blue skies, crisp trees, fluffy white clouds, it was all just so… so heavenly. Damn, he wishes he could take a picture of this dream because this has to be the prettiest thing he’s ever laid his eyes on.

Once he was over his initial shock he looked over at All Might who was staring at him from a nearby hill. "Follow me, Kaminari.”

Well who was he to say no to All Might of all people. And even if this was just a dream he wanted to explore every inch of that cool city before he woke up. Walking closely behind the tall man, Kaminari noticed a few things about the people there. They all looked so happy to be there but when they looked at him their faces would contain varying degrees of shock and grief. It was weird to say the least. One minute someone would have such a happy go lucky grin on their face yet the second they looked at him their smile would fade into something more forlorn and despondent. He tried asking All Might about it but the man just gave him a sad look and stated that everything would be explained later.

As they got further into the city he was surprised to see that he recognized some of the people there. What’s even weirder is that they were all heroes that he’s talked to in passing. Native, Thirteen, Crust, Sir Nighteye. Heroes that were all dead. Of course he knew them before their passing but not as well as some of his friends like Midoriya or Yaoyorozu. It was strange to see them all staring at him but when he asked All Might the only thing he got was a pat on the shoulder and a nudge to keep on walking.

Eventually they reached what seemed to be a grand hall of sorts. Giant stone pillars supporting a roof that had a very intricate and interesting design. Marble floors lines with gold and porcelain chairs and tables that looked like they belonged in a museum. Long windows covered the walls and bathed the hall in the bright yellow sunshine from outside. The whole room was astounding to him but the person that stood in the center of it all through him for a major loop. Because behind a small podium, stood Aizawa.

Kaminari stood there dumbly staring at the man and made no move to approach him until All Might pushed him forward. It had been two whole years since he’d lost his teacher and he looked just the same as he did when he taught them back at UA. If Kaminari didn’t know this was a dream he would’ve cried on the spot. For now he kept his composure knowing that he would soon wake up and this would all be over.

“Problem child.” Usually when Aizawa said this, his tone would convey something akin to irritation and anger but now it was laced with nothing but poorly veiled sadness. “I didn’t want to believe this day would come and so soon. Do you remember what happened?”

“Uh, me, Ashido, and Ojiro were fighting these criminals who were trying to rob a bank and I guess I must have blacked out because this is a really weird dream.” Kaminari scratched the back of his head and turned to look at the men who were staring at him in confusion.

“A dream?” All Might asked.

“Well yeah, of course it’s a dream. How else would I be able to talk to you guys. Although I can say that is a pretty good dream. I mean look at this building.” He widely gestured towards the walls of the structure. “That’s pretty impressive.”

"Young Kaminari, I think you must be mistaken, this isn"t-" All Might was interrupted by Aizawa approaching the young hero. He crouched down and put his hand on the others shoulders as a parent would do when delivering serious news to their child.

"Kaminari, you died."

"What? No I"m not dead. I just… I was just with Ashido and Ojiro, we were stopping a robbery. I didn’t… this is just a dream I-I didn’t die.” Kaminari started to slowly back up out of Aizawa’s reach. Both men just looked at him in what seemed to be sympathy. But what do they have to be sympathetic about? None of this was real it… it wasn’t real. He didn’t die. He didn’t. He was just going to wake up and Ashido would be there and everything would be fine. Because everything was fine. He was fine.

“Kaminari-”

“There’s no way this is real. I mean I-I’m not dead or anything t-this is just all in my head.” He nervously chuckled at the two men who were looking at him with such sad expressions that were doing nothing to calm his nerves. “No, I-I’m not dead, this is just fake. A-All of this is fake.”

“I know you don’t believe us Kaminari but we can prove it to you.” Aizawa gestured to All Might who then proceeded to create another portal. Only this time he didn’t go through and neither did Aizawa. Both his former teachers just stood by as they waited on him to enter. A moment passed before Kaminari made his decision. If he really was dead then it would be better to rip the band-aid off and face whatever was on the other side. If not then he could just forget this whole fucked up experience ever happened. Collecting himself, Kaminari spared one last glance at his past homeroom teacher before stepping through.

Looking around he immediately knew where he was. This was the site of the bank robbery Ashido, Ojiro, and him were trying to stop. His teammates were outside giving their statements to the police so that meant he was still inside the bank handcuffing the criminals. It was surreal, seeing himself from the outsiders perspective. He guesses this is how people felt when they said they had an “out of body experience”. As he was performing the arrest he remembers thinking about how weirdly easy it was to stop the robbery. But he ignored the thought just wanting to hand the criminals over and finish his patrol route so he could go home and relax.

The world slowed down as his past self exited the building. His heart was throbbing in his ears as he watched the next few moments unfold.

A cop screamed.

Shots were fired.

Ashido and Ojiro took cover.

His past self collapsed.

He was frozen in his spot as he watched the frenzy occur with hazy vision. He watched as Ashido and Ojiro rushed to his past selves side. Ashido pushed her hands onto Kaminari’s chest attempting to stop the bleeding. Bleeding? Why was there blood? Looking across the street he spotted it. An apartment building directly across the street. You wouldn’t be able to see it unless you focused. A sniper. The robbery was staged. That"s why it was so easy. They wanted him to come. It seemed a cop also noticed and screamed orders to shut down the whole block. But the damage was already done.

Looking back at the figure on the floor he watched as paramedics tried to save him. Both Ashido and Ojiro stood back, tears in their eyes. Kaminari took a step forward and watched as the life faded from his eyes. His skin turned to white and his lips to blue. The paramedics stayed there for what felt like hours, trying everything they could to bring him back but it was no use. Kaminari took a step back as the situation just became all too real.

Everything started to make too much sense. “This isn’t real.” The stares people gave him. “This isn’t real.” The pitying looks they all cast upon him. “This isn’t real.” His own dead body laying a few meters away from him. “This isn’t real.” ...it was all just so heavenly... “THIS ISN’T REAL.”

He opened his eyes, when had he closed them?, only to be greeted with Aizawa and All Might. His breathing picked up as realization dawned on him. He was dead.

He was vaguely aware of his former teachers trying to talk to him but nothing would register in his head because he was dead. He died. Chargebolt would never be able to save another civilian or stop another disaster. His friends would never see him again. He died and there’s nothing he could do about it. So he did the only thing he really could do at that moment.

He cried.
