how are you not dead?

Chapter Text

Touya is not, has not and will not be a morning person. The morning hates him and he hates it right back. He has tried many times to be a morning person but he’s never been successful for a variety of reasons so he just thinks it’s destiny.  He will be a night owl for all his life and he’s fine with that lifestyle.

Unfortunately, Keigo is most definitely a morning person.

The fucker practically wakes up at the ass crack of dawn and even though Keigo is the only person he has ever loved, there is a part of him that would like to strangle the bird sometimes. Lovingly, of course. Typically, Keigo would be up at dawn and already running around the apartment, thus waking up Touya, who is not a deep sleeper, and then he wouldn’t be able to go back to bed, so he too, would have to wake up at the crack of dawn time. It was a system. Not one that Touya particularly liked but asking Keigo to just fucking relax when he wakes up isn’t something to likely happen anytime soon. Touya figures Keigo will always be his shitty alarm clock.

However, that is not what happened today.

Touya hadn’t woken up to Keigo singing in the shower, but to the sound of the door being banged on. He cursed under his breath, groaning as he struggled to sit up. Next to him, Keigo was curling into the blankets and whining.

“Keigo…?” he muttered, blurrily looking at his boyfriend, who for once, was not up and ready.

“Long night...Five minutes?” he mumbled back, pulling the blanket over his head.

The knocking still kept going until Touya decided to grant the hero some mercy and go get the door himself. He figured that whoever was at the door would probably run when they see his face anyway so he could go back to bed immediately after.

Touya gives Keigo’s hair a quick ruffle before heaving himself up and shuffling to the door. The knocking was getting progressively louder and more aggressive, making Touya feel progressively more irritated.

“Oh my fucking god, it is seven am, I will burn your ass if you don’t shut the fuck up!” he shouted angrily as he swung the door open.

A pair of heterochromia eyes looked back at him with a nonchalant expression.

“I see you bought the cocktapus.” Shouto fucking Todoroki said, glancing over Touya’s shoulder and noticing the plushie on the couch.

Touya hasn’t seen this kid in years, hasn’t allowed himself to even think about this kid for years and that is the first thing he hears from his brother?!

He tries to say something, but it comes out like a wheeze, like he’s dying. Touya just grabs the door and shuts it very loudly, pushing against it with his back, as if that will keep the kid out better.

“Hooooly shit.” He gasps out as panic-brain starts to kick in, “No. Nope. Not ready. Definitely not. Fuck this shit! Fuck this shit right up the ass, oh my god. Shit on a stick!”

“Shitting on what…?” Keigo grumbled out as he waddled out of the bedroom, the blankets resting on his shoulders and dragging behind him.

“I am not here!” Touya hissed before locking himself in the bathroom.

Keigo was not nearly awake for this shit. Of course the one day he’s not peppy in the morning is the morning that apparently there’s some fucking crisis happening. The hero yawns and silently ties the blanket around his neck like a cape before going to the door and opening it again.

“I’m here to see my brother.”

Keigo looks into the eyes of Shouto fucking Todoroki and he deems that he is definitely not awake enough for this. Remembering what Touya had said before he ran off like a chicken, he takes a deep breath. Just play dumb.

“What’s a brother?”

Too fucking dumb. Keigo is barely awake, he gets a pass.

“My brother is here.”

“No, he’s not.”

“Yes, he is. I just saw him.”

“That was...a stripper. Who I paid. To look like, uh, Touya. I mean, Dabi.”

“I know Dabi is Touya, you don’t have to lie to me. You’re bad at lying by the way.”

“I’ve been undercover, I think I’m pretty good at lying.”

“You probably sucked.”

Keigo decided to ignore the fact that Shouto was right. No one believed him or at the very least, Touya sure didn’t.

He sighs, rubbing his chin as he leaned against the doorframe, “Look, kid, it is 7am, I’ve had a long night and I would really rather deal with this when I don’t feel dead on my feet. Come back later. Like, at least 3 hours later.”

Shouto seemed to think for a moment, considering his offer before nodding, “You have 3 hours. Be prepared because now I have time to prepare too.”

“Yes, yes, thank you.” Keigo grumbled out before shutting the door without a goodbye, “He’s gone, you can get out of the bathroom now.”

He’s a distinct click before Touya’s head pokes out of the bathroom like he’s checking for monsters. It’s moments like these that makes Keigo how this guy became one of the most feared villains in recent history. As Touya finally came out fully and padded over, Keigo tugged him towards the bedroom.

“You’ve got three hours.”

“Wait, what. Why didn’t you tell him to fuck off?!”

“Didn’t think of that.”

“Oh my god, he’s going to come back, why did you let him come back?!”

“Hey, he had the look in his eye. He’s either going to come in and talk to you here or he’s going to sneak attack you somewhere in public. I made a choice and frankly, I think it was the best one. Now, can we discuss this more in like, two hours, I need fucking sleep.”

Touya would’ve liked to argue more but Keigo shot him a look that left no room for argument and he just followed the bird back to the bed. Keigo flopped onto the mattress and whined as he opened his arms, grasping for him. A smile creeped onto his face despite his initial bad mood.

“Really?” Touya mused, watching as a pout formed on his lips, “I thought you wanted to sleep.”

“Yeah, with cuddles. Get in here.”

“You’re so clingy.”

“You love it.”

Touya didn’t argue with that statement as he slipped into his arms and sighed, “Fine, we’ll cuddle but I am going to murder you.”

“After cuddles.”

“After cuddles.”

“Wonderful, I can live with that.”

“No, you won’t because you will be dead, fucker. Nothing is stopping me from just smothering you.”

“After cuddles!”

“After cuddles.”

Keigo grinned, satisfied as he pressed a finger against his lips, “Now shh…sleep time.”

Touya watched him fall back asleep and he sighed. No matter what happened, he could never seem to stay mad at Keigo. Probably because he was cute but Touya likes to believe he’s stronger than that.

[x]

“I’m not ready for this shit.”

Keigo sighs as he watches Touya pace in the living room, “Okay, then when do you think you would be?”

The other man paused for a second before replying, “Absolutely never and I’m okay with that. We can just never talk to each other again and I will be able to live my whole entire life without ever having to deal with this shit. Just like I planned it.”

“Your plan was to kill your dad and then probably die doing something stupid. I’m gonna be brutally honest, it wasn’t the most thought out plan.”

“It was a good plan.”

“You made that plan when you were like, fourteen.”

It was a good plan.

Keigo groaned as he mumbled, “Why am I so in love with you…?” he shifted his gaze to Touya, who looked genuinely distraught and his eyes softened as he walked towards him, “I don’t get it, what are you so afraid of? They know who you are, they visited you in the hospital! There’s not much to hide from them anymore.”

“Yeah, but I was unconscious. I didn’t have to see their faces when they looked at me.”

“You can’t run forever, you know.”

“I’ve been able to avoid them for years now, I can do that again.”

Keigo watched his boyfriend carefully, eyes sad, before gently grasping his arms, pinning them to Touya’s side, “They want to see you. I’m pretty damn sure they missed you and I’m sure you missed them too, yeah?” Touya glared at the ground, refusing to answer. The hero made a soft noise gently cupped his face and made the taller man look at him with a closed-off gaze, “Touya...you have a second chance now. Use it.”

Touya’s eyes stared into Keigo’s before a crack appeared and he slumped tiredly against the hero, head tucked into the crook of his neck, “I…”

“I know you’re scared.”

“...yeah.”

Warm fingers trailed into his hair and Keigo whispered, “I’ll be right here the whole time, kay? If things start going really south, I’ll get him out, no questions asked, okay?”

“...promise?”

“Scout’s honor.”

Touya finally lifted his head and scoffed softly, “You were never in scouts.”

“Hero’s honor.”

“That doesn’t mean much to me.”

Fine. I swear on my wings. If I lie, you can burn my wings.”

Touya stared for a second longer before nodding, “Okay, fine.”

A knock cut through the air and Keigo gently nudged Touya’s back, “Alright, let’s not keep him waiting.”

Touya stared at the door, feeling a weight in his chest and a lump formed in his throat. He’s technically done this before, though it was on a battlefield and there was more fighting then actual mature conversation. The last time Shouto saw him, it wasn’t in a good way and he wouldn’t blame the kid for having a grudge.

God, he can barely remember how old Shouto was when he left. If he was doing the math correctly, it’s been almost eight years. He doesn’t know how much Shouto would even remember about him, if anything at all. Touya never had many opportunities to be a good brother and he would likely be considered one of the worst now. But, he remembers taking care of Shouto whenever his mother couldn’t. He remembers playing with him. He remembers fighting his dad about him.

But Shouto was probably too young to remember any of it.

That would be a good thing.

Touya grasped the door handle and steeled himself. He used to be so damn good at hiding his feelings, what happened? Slowly, he opened the door and looked at his little brother, who looked right back.

“Uh, hi.” he glanced down for a second and noticed Shouto holding a rolled tube of paper and an old notebook, “Uh, what’s up with that?”

“They’re lists.” Shouto replied simply before shoving past his brother and stepped into their house.

Keigo glanced at the two of them before turning up his charm as he gestured to the kitchen, “I’ll pour us some drinks, get comfy.”

Touya gave him a nod before walking to the couch, falling heavily onto it. Looking at his baby brother suddenly so grown up makes him feel so much older than he actually is.

Shouto followed before taking a seat in the armchair, expression blank and the sight of it made Touya’s insides turn.

“So...you’re here.” he said awkwardly, the silence looming over them. After a moment, he frustratedly said, “You came here for a reason, so spit it ou-!”

“When you disappeared, father said that since I was so young, I probably wouldn’t even remember you so I should just stop caring so much about you being gone.” Shouto said, staring at the paper in his hand and fiddling with the edges, “I didn’t want him to be right so I...I made this list. I asked Fuyumi and Natsuo for help to make more stuff up. You can read it...if you’d like.”

Touya blinked, unsure as he grasped onto the list and read it. He was kinda scared of what he would find.

Touya’s head shot up to look at Shouto, speechless. An unnamed emotion grasped at his throat and he could feel his eyes burn for a second.

“I...it’s not meat buns anymore.” he shakily said, laughter in his voice as his eyes went back to the little list and traced over Shouto’s crayon, Fuyumi’s fancy handwriting and Natsuo’s messy pen, “It’s omurice. And my feet don’t smell.”

Shouto’s form seemed to relax, though his eyes didn’t leave the ground as he replied, “They did.”

The ex-villain couldn’t help but huff out a chuckle as he put down the list and pointed at the rolled up paper, “What about that?”

Shouto gently unrolled the paper, letting it unfurl over his lap and onto the ground, “I didn’t believe that you were really dead. Not fully. So I made a list of questions that I had for you.”

“That’s...a lot of questions.”

“I kept writing questions for years. It...I did it every time I thought about you.”

“Oh.”

The words weighed heavily on their shoulders and Touya ran his fingers through his hair, head aching as he tried to find the right words. He didn’t really think there was any.

“Shouto-”

“Why did you become a villain?” he asked sharply, eyes finally meeting him properly and his expression cracked with a hint of anger.

Touya knew this question would be coming, “Why else? To kill Dad.”

“Why couldn't you have done it the normal way? Why did you have to join a villain organization?”

“You and I both know it wouldn’t be that simple. Besides, I wanted to do bigger things. To ruin him entirely before killing him. Make him suffer.” he snarled his words.

Shouto glared, “But you’re not doing that now?”

“I…”

“Have you given up?”

“Well-”

“Why are you stopping now?”

“It almost sounds like you want me to keep being a villain.”

Shouto clenched his fists in his lap as he asked, “ Why are you stopping now?

Touya’s eyes trailed over to Keigo, who was sat on the other end of the couch and was silently analyzing the entire conversation, and his brother spat out, “So you stopped for him.”

“Woah, okay, hey I was caught.”

“But you never give up!” Shouto suddenly raised his voice, the mask fully cracking as he angrily shouted, “You literally died and you still didn’t give up! Why now?! Why him?!”

Keigo stepped in, arms up as he tried to wave the teen down, “Hey, calm down, kid. No need to yell.”

Shouto shot him a silencing glare, making the hero sit back down at his ire and he turned his attention back to Touya, standing up, “You disappeared for years. You left Fuyumi and Natsuo and me and Mom with Dad. This is the first time I've properly looked at you in years. We’ve been waiting for you for years . We’ve mourned you for years! You didn’t come back for us but you came back for him ?!”

Touya opened his mouth to try and say something but nothing came out. His mouth shut with a clack as he stared at the teen, who sank back down. He’s never seen Shouto so emotional. The kid always had a stoic face, only smiling occasionally even as a kid. He rarely cried, rarely shouted. Now, here he was, sitting in the armchair and covering his face with his hands, as he mumbled into them, exhaustion seeping through his voice.

“Were we not good enough for you to want to come back...? Did you really abandon us...?” he sounded like he didn’t really want the answer.

Touya wanted to run, it was all getting too emotional and he didn’t handle real emotions well. But he promised himself that he was practicing honesty.

With a deep breath, he stood up from the couch and kneeled in front of Shouto, his voice softening to the tone he used when his brother cried.

“Shouto. Look at me.” The teen slowly did, eyes still angry and Touya whispered, “I’m not good with this kind of stuff. I’m not going to lie, I did plan to never see you all again. But I swear, it’s not because I wanted to abandon you. I thought about you, Fuyumi, Natsuo, Mom, every single day. I...I didn’t come back because I didn’t think I could. Didn’t think I deserved it.”

“What about now?” Shouto asked quietly.

“Still no. But…” he pointed to Keigo, “He helped me take a chance again. Okay? He’s not more or less important than any of you. He helped bring me to you.”

Shouto stared at him for a second longer before his shoulders finally relaxed and he slumped forward, arms wrapping around Touya’s neck, “I missed you…”

Touya ruffled his hair, wrapping his arms around his brother and pulling him up, “Yeah, I missed you too, squirt.”

[x]

“So, are you planning on just, staying here?”

Shouto shrugged, sipping his water as he leaned against the dining counter, “Well, I don’t need to be back for a little while, so yes.”

Keigo chuckled as he patted the teen’s hair, “Wow, no arguing with you, huh?”

Touya, cooking lunch on the stove, said, “Okay, well don’t expect us to have anything to entertain you. We ain’t got shit.”

“No worries, I’ve got the list. I plan on getting answers to all my questions.”

The older Todoroki inwardly sighed and he gave Shouto an unimpressed stare, “How many fucking questions are there?”

“At least three hundred.”

“Jesus.”

“Don’t worry, there’s a lot of repeats.”

“Doesn’t really help.”

Keigo grinned at the thought, leaning against the counter beside Shouto, “Actually, I would like to listen to this. I bet there’s tons of shit I don’t know about you and I’d like to know everything about you. I mean, I didn’t know you peed in a koi pond and I’m glad I do now.”

Touya glared, “I was like, fucking ten.”

“That’s way too old to be peeing in a koi pond.”

Shouto nodded, “It is.”

“Both of you, shut the fuck up about the koi pond.”

Keigo snickered and Shouto hummed in agreement before grabbing the list of questions, “Favourite colour?”

“Really? That’s where we’re starting?”

“Yes.”

“Uh…” Touya thought about it for a second before replying, “Green.”

His boyfriend blinked in surprise, “Wait, really? I thought it would be like, blue? You know, like your flames?”

“I don’t exactly like my flames. Besides green is like, ”

Shouto silently wrote down his response and asked, “Least favourite colour?”

“Used to be red. Now it’s brown.”

“Did you actually put on your socks left then right?”

“Yes.”

“Do you actually hate mascots?”

“Yes, they’re fucking weird and should burn.”

“Did you actually get kneed in the balls after your first kiss and you cried?”

Touya blinked, Kiego laughing at him as he squinted his eyes at Shouto’s nonchalant face, “Where the fuck did you hear about that?”

“Natsuo.”

He grits his teeth, “I’m going to kill that kid.”

“Did you though?”

“Fucking- Okay, I got kneed in the balls but that’s because I accidentally bit her lip and she got surprised. And I didn’t fucking cry, okay? It was an unremarkable kiss, hardly special.”

Shouto smirked but wrote it down, “What was your first relationship?”

“Like, dating? Or fucking? Cause they have different answers.”

“Both.”

Touya stirred the pot as he thought about it. It’s been a really long time and honestly, the years between leaving home and becoming a villain were pretty hazy. He searched his mind for the answer before the blurry memory came back, “I had this buddy who hooked me up with my first job. He had some kind of scar fetish or something. Was majorly kinky.”

“Wait, your first time was kinky?” Keigo asked, leaning in.

“No, that was some girl before that. It was just awkward. This guy was just the first person I consistently banged.”

Shouto asked, “Then who did you date first?”

“Uh…” Touya thought for a moment before replying, “I guess...that would be Hawks.”

Keigo had a dopey grin at his words and clutched his hands to his chest, “Aw, really? That’s so cute.”

“Shut up.”

The afternoon kept going like that, with Shouto asking the questions on his list and Touya answering them. It was still weird seeing his brother again, but it was a nice kind of weird.
