Work Text:

“Sai… Hey Sai!”
Saisei groaned as he was shaken awake by his lover Saku. The two of them were in the same bed, and it was completely dark, even with Sai begrudgingly opening his eyes. He groaned, rolling away from his needy boyfriend, who was kneeling over him. With his hands on Sai’s shoulder, Saku shook him again.
“Sai-”
“What is it, Saku?” He finally asked with a grumble, contemplating putting a pillow over his head. “It’s the middle of the night-”
“We have to do something for Haku-sensei.” He heard in a chilled voice right next to his ear, Saku’s elbows bent as he hunched over Sai. He should have put that pillow over his head sooner.
“Now?” Sai questioned with a tired groan. “Saku, please-”
“Yeah, but he’s almost out of castella!” With another shake failing to fully rouse his lover, Saku went to grab his hand, physically pulling him out from under the blanket. Sai yelped, his eyes snapping open as he pulled his hand back.
“I’m up, I’m up!”

“So what’s the plan again?” Sai asked, sitting upright as Saku tossed clothes at him, a shirt almost hitting him in the face. “I don’t think any bakery is open at-”
“There is one!” Saku pointed at him, his eyes wide and almost unseeing. “It’s in the next town over, and it’s open from 17:00 to 5:00 the next morning.” He clapped twice. “So get dressed, we have to go!” Seeing the futility of arguing against his slightly delusional lover, Sai stretched, putting on his clothes.

It wasn’t a very long journey, but the two of them headed to the next town on foot, Sai carrying Saku on his back part of the way. Sai had to admit he enjoyed Saku’s head on his shoulder, mumbling quiet “I love you”s into his ear, but that didn’t change the extra weight.
As they finally arrived in the next town over, Saku was still on his back, directing him.
“You sure you even know where we’re going?” Sai asked, not even turning his head to look at Saku.
“Absolutely!” He heard the voice coming from behind him. “I quadruple checked where this place was, closest one open at this hour!”
“You don’t have to yell…” Sai couldn’t admit it to Saku, but being woken up at such an hour and walking so far was giving him a headache.
“Yeah yeah but- oh! Sai!” Saku quickly tapped his shoulder, extending his arm so Sai could see him point at a small bakery further down on the street, the lights inside setting it apart from its darkened neighbors.
“Looks like we might have to wait, I see someone outside.” Sai sighed. “Who knows what the line inside must be like.”

However, as they neared the bakery, Sai letting Saku off his back, their fatigue turned to confusion, then excitement added to the mix. Standing outside the bakery, smoking a cigarette, was-
“H-H-Hakushuu-sensei?!” Saku’s voice quivered as much as his body shook, before he broke into a run to greet the man. However, he tripped over his own feet, falling at Kitahara’s feet. Undisturbed by this, Kitahara let out a puff of smoke, looking down at the man, who had started to tear up.
“Oh, good morning Sakutaro-kun.” Sai sped up to tend to his boyfriend, kneeling next to him to help him sit up. He wiped his tears on his sleeve, hugging his head to his chest on the sidewalk.
“Shhhh…. Saku are you ok?” At the feel of a nod, Sai looked up at Kitahara, tilting his head.
“It’s the middle of the night, Haku-san…. What are you doing here?”
“Castella craving.” He answered simply, with a shrug. “When it strikes, who am I to deny it? Now then…” He looked down at the two of them. “What are you two doing here?”
Sai paused, the events since he was woken up flashing before his eyes. They had travelled in the middle of the night to get Kitahara some castella…
And the man himself had come for the same reason.
“I um…” He laughed a bit. “Heard good things about this place, that’s all!” Kitahara nodded with an amused hum.
“Well I’d suggest the castella, but you’d have to get your own. I don’t intend on sharing, not even with those I love.”
“I wouldn’t expect anything less.” Sai laughed tirely, picking Saku up off the sidewalk.

He just hoped that he could go back to sleep after they got their castella. He wouldn’t mind being carried for a change.
