“There are other ways,” said Lan Wangji, ready with an admonishment the moment Wei Wuxian had attention to spare.

“You saw what happened when it was damaged,” Wei Wuxian protested, incredulous—did he not care?

“I saw, but do not understand.” In other words, thought Wei Wuxian, Wen Ning’s well-being just less important than Lan Wangji’s disgust with his methods.

Anger felt better than fear. “And so?” Wei Wuxian retorted liltingly. “Lan Wangji, this is Wen Ning’s condition. Are you now in the habit of prying into the private affairs of others?”

Lan Wangji met Wei Wuxian’s eyes. Wei Wuxian stared back. At length, Lan Wangji looked away first.

“...No,” he conceded. “I won’t play Cleansing again.”

    “Thank you,”Wei Wuxian said warily.

    “Perhaps another song—”

    “No!” he snapped.

Lan Wangji’s eyebrows pinched slightly. “I would help, if I’m able.”

Like Wei Wuxian would trust that. He gripped tighter at Wen Ning’s shoulders, as if the hold could keep him from the danger lurking inside his own body.
