to be better

Summary:

And, as he holds his newborn son in his arms, his brows furrow in concentration and  his lips purse as he thinks;

I'll be better than him. I have to be better than him.

Hino coos up at him again and Dabi smiles.

No matter what.

Notes:

WOOO I'm on a roll with fics this week! I hope you enjoy this super sweet and a bit short piece of work! I actually had a lot of fun writing it!

Hino is about two days old.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

For someone who was only two days old, Hino sure was tall.

The midwife was almost as surprised as everyone else when Hino was first revealed to them. He was almost twenty-three inches. An inch taller than the average newborn.

But, he fits snuggly in Dabi's arms, the Alpha holding onto his pup and gazing into his gold and blue eyes as he sits on a newly bought rocking chair in the living room.

Hino is going to town on a bottle full of Keigo's breastmilk, not stopping for about seven seconds before taking a deep breath and going right back at it. He's so cute. It makes Dabi smile, even if it is somewhat painful with his staples.

After a few minutes of Dabi holding the bottle, Hino releases it and pushes it away, whining and flailing his arms a bit. Dabi chuckles.

"Alright, alright," He whispers, turning around to put the haft empty bottle on the small table next to him before looking right back at his son as though he were afraid he'd miss anything. "Such a whiner, aren't ya? Ah, but your cuteness makes up for it, I guess." He kisses Hino's cheek, causing another whine to erupt from him. Dabi huffs and his lips quirk upwards. "Okay, little man. I suppose I'll back off for now." He smiles.

He then leans Hino on his chest, his tiny head resting on his shoulder, and begins to gently pat his back, creating a rhythm as he kisses his mess of dark blue hair. Gotta burp the little guy after he's done eating after all.

Dabi pulls Hino back until he's sitting in his lap and he stares at his pup's eyes.

They're filled with innocence and sparkling bright youth. There mixed with turquoise blue and yellow gold, shining like jewels among dirt and glowing like stars deep in space. In short, they're beautiful and a perfect mixture of Dabi and Keigo.

But...even with all they're beauty...they still remind him of his godforsaken father.

Dabi frowns and shakes the thought from his mind, or, tries to at least. It doesn't really work all that well.

It doesn't matter if it's been almost ten years since he last tried to kill his father, doesn't matter if it's almost been twenty-five years since he began abusing Shouto, and it doesn't matter if it's almost been two decades since he ran away from home to become a villain, he still can't ever forgive Enji Todoroki for the things he did and probably never will.

His father who isn't rotting in his grave yet, part of Dabi's mind screams, the one from all those years ago when the only thing on his mind was revenge.

Father doesn't matter anymore, Another part of Dabi's mind whispers, the part that's all Touya. We have everything we could ever want right in front of us. There's no point in dwelling on the past when the future is burning bright.

Dabi huffs at that, but, he supposes Touya is right. The past isn't meant for being dwelled on, there's no point in it. After all, he'll probably be to busy taking care of this little guy to even worry about it anymore.

Doesn't mean we have to forgive him, League of Villains member Dabi hisses.

No, no it doesn't mean that. Dabi doesn't have to forgive him. He never has to if he doesn't want to, at least that's what his therapist says.

"Ah!"

Dabi's dragged back into reality by Hino's squealing and he smiles again, leaning down to kiss his stomach and tiny cheeks once more, causing his pup to shriek with laughter that's almost too loud for Dabi's sensitive ears.

"Shh, shh," He tries through his laughter. "You're gonna wake mama up, buddy."

Hino coos up at him and chirps a bit, his arms wiggling in front of him and Dabi chuckles again, bringing their foreheads together.

He feels like crying. Not out of sadness, but out of joy.

"You're perfect, Hino," He whispers, not that Hino can understand him, after all, the pup only keeps chirping and purring, his wings fluttering as his teeny-tiny hands keep gently patting his face. "You're absolutely perfect and I'm gonna do everything in my power to make sure you grow up to be the best person you can possibly be. To be someone who grows up in a loving household with loving parents who are going to do absolutely anything to ensure your safety. I'll protect you from everything that would harm you and keep you safe, no matter what."

And, as he holds his newborn son in his arms, his brows furrow in concentration and  his lips purse as he thinks;

I'll be better than him. I have to be better than him.

Hino coos up at him again and Dabi smiles.

No matter what.
