After You

Summary:

A KiriBaku fic for @Akaya-95 on Tumblr!

Work Text:

“So what do you think, earlobes?”

Bakugou asked Jirou for feedback as the two of them chilled out in the commons, and quite literally too. Despite what Deku and his famous notebook on heroes claims, Bakugou’s body was horribly weak to the cold. Thankfully, he had Jirou who was the tiniest walking heater he swears he’d ever meet in the UA. The Bakusquad found this out one early December afternoon and one by one they began to join her under the blanket that she dragged around the 1-A dorms. Kirishima, Sero, Kaminari, Mina, and even Bakugou would each take turns hanging with Jirou and her blanket on the couch.

“What do you mean ‘what do I think?’. You’re the one trying to ask out your best friend not me.” Jirou continued to text Momo, “You know Kirishima the best, do you think he’d like your plan?”

Bakugou angrily sunk deeper into the blanket, all you could see now was his blond spikey hair. “I don’t fucking know, I’m not good at this lovey dovey crap.”

He gained a smug side glance and eye roll from the girl next to him. “Well if anything I’d say asking him during this time of the year is your best decision yet. Hopefully it isn’t your only decision.”

“I’m trying goddamn it, and you aren’t any help. I don’t know why I even asked you!”

Jirou sighed and put her phone to sleep for a second, “Look Bakugou, I’m no good at this stuff either but if you think your idea is what’s going to make him happy then go for it.”

The boy submerged into the warm blanket pouting to himself as footsteps came shuffling their way.

Jirou smiled and watched the topic of the evening come her way, “Hey, Kirishima. Looking for something?”

The boy drowning in the blanket flinched.

“Hey, yeah. I’m actually looking for Baku-bro, have you seen him?”

‘Don’t you fucking dare.’ Bakugou angrily prayed Jirou wouldn’t sell him out.

“Yep, I have! In fact, he’s right here.”

The blanket that covered Bakugou was dramatically pulled off as if he was the rabbit of a magic act.

“Ta-da!”

“IT’S COLD, YOU BITCH!” the blonde growled at the magician. He lunged towards the part of the blanket that was stolen from him. Only to get pulled into a hug by his one and only crush and dragged away from the couch.

“Dude, I’ve been looking for you everywhere! I should have known you were down here. I was going to ask if you wanted some hot chocolate, Satou taught me how to make the best hot chocolate ever!” Kirishima was ecstatic as ever and unfazed by the ticking time bomb in his arms. He looked over towards the girl on the couch watching in amusement, “You want some too, Jirou?”

“Sure, sounds cool.”

“Yeah, yeah, I’ll go with you just let me the fuck go.” Bakugou could easily sympathize with cats now, how horribly uncomfortable it was to be picked up without warning. Though he couldn’t say he wasn’t somewhat thrilled to be held.

Kirishima set him down and began to walk towards the kitchen and continued to talk more and more as Bakugou followed behind. Before Bakugou’s attention was off her, Jirou gave Bakugou a small wave accompanied by a taunting smile then a thumbs up. He glared at her and flipped her off before turning back around and catching up with his crush.

“Good luck, jerk.” She muttered before fixing her blanket and unlocking her phone.

After being in the kitchen a bit longer than Bakugou would have liked, Kirishima finally got to finishing their hot chocolate. Infamous for his lesser than great and better than bad cooking, Kirishima was on the edge of his seat as Bakugou finally took a sip out of his mug.

“This shit is actually pretty good, Shitty Hair.” The compliment from Bakugou was well received as the red head’s face lit up, but then slowly went sour.

The mug in his hands was angrily set down on the table in response to Kirishima’s depression. “What!? I said it was good, and that’s a step up from usual for you and your cooking.”

After downing his drink in mere seconds he looked back to his friend, “You never call me by my real name, man. What will it take to get you to call me ‘Kirishima’?”

“I called you by your name in I-Island when we were fighting those stupid fucking villains, remember? You were punched into a goddamn wall where you got stuck the rest of the fight cause you forgot to turn off your damn quirk.” Bakugou picked his mug back up and finished his drink off.

“I mean, like, always though. Just no more nicknames?” Kirishima looked down into his empty mug.

Emotions and thoughts started to clash in Bakugou’s head. The word ‘sorry’ wasn’t in his dictionary and calling him ‘Kirishima’ on a daily basis wouldn’t seem right to him and he didn’t know why. The name ‘Shitty Hair’ just seemed right to him, he never thought it made the boy feel bad though. Bakugou gave everyone he met a nickname based off of the first thing that stood out to him. His eyes were off to the side looking at the tiny insignificant paint details on the wall, anything to not look at an emotionally wounded Kirishima. It was too late though, he already felt horribly guilty and he hated the feeling of it.

“FINE. I’ll think about it. So stop making that face.”

Kirishima’s face lit up once again. What was the use of buying a Christmas tree really? 1-A dorms could just use Kirishima this year and Bakugou wouldn’t have a single complaint about it. The boy was bright enough to blind them all and happy enough to bring joy to everyone.

“Really?! Awesome! You’re the best Baku-bro.” Bakugou was pulled into yet another suffocating hug.

“LET. ME. GO.” Small explosions went off in his palms.

“My bad!” Kirishima let him go and took a step back to scratch the back of his head thinking about how unmanly he probably seemed.

“Oh! Dude, I almost forgot.” He gripped Bakugou’s shoulders and started bouncing up and down like a child.

“What now?” This was all too much excitement for him, he bit his tongue in anger.

“So you know how Christmas Eve is tomorrow right?”

“Yeah, what about it?” Bakugou began to worry. The plan he came up with and asked Jirou for input on took place tomorrow. He had meant to ask the red head if he was busy, but now his plans may be dust.

Kirishima let his shoulders go and began to use his hands for overexaggerating gestures, “So I was thinking, maaaaybe we could do something? We all agreed we’d have Christmas day this year with everyone in the dorms and have the party and all that, but I thought it would be cool to maybe hang with you before that? You know, just me and you? Since I know you probably won’t be down in the commons for the party and we could go to the mall maybe go see the giant Christmas tree while we are there downtown-“

He was nervously mumbling on and on and hell knew when Kirishima would stop mumbling when he was like this. Despite how horribly annoying it was to Bakugou, he was glad he wasn’t the one who would be making the first move. The dorms weren’t going to be a safe place if he had tripped up a single word when asking Kirishima out on Christmas Eve.

“Alright, alright, I GET IT.” His words we drowned out, Kirishima’s mumbling continued to distract himself. Bakugou tried again, “YOU CAN STOP NOW, I’LL GO WITH YOU GODDAMN IT!”

All hand gestures stopped along with the eyes that darted across the room with each exaggerated move by Kirishima. His arms lost all life and dangled down while he looked at Bakugou with the most amazed expression. “Really?”

“Yes, good god. So stop your fucking mumbling. I can’t keep up with you when you do that shit.” Bakugou walked past him to pour Jirou her own mug of hot chocolate then sauntered past him once again and into the commons as calm as could be. Leaving no trace of any happiness or joy as if it was like he didn’t just agree to go on a date with his crush on the eve of one of the most romantic holidays.

“I’LL BE READY TO GO BY 6!” Kirishima yelled a bit louder than he intended, but he didn’t care. He was over the moon and nothing could stop him.

“Stupid shitty hair nerd.” Muttered the grinning blonde.

He placed the mug of hot chocolate down on the coffee table in front of Jirou curled up in her blanket. Jirou sat up and grabbed the warm mug and smiled as she watched Bakugou pass the table.

“Does calling him rude nicknames make it easier for you to hide how much you love him?” Jirou asked just loud enough for the blonde to hear.

He began to stomp away even faster, “SHUT UP, EARLOBES!”

“Oh my god! Kirishima you look so cute! What’s the occasion?” Mina began to run circles around the redhead as he walked into the commons to wait for Bakugou. His outfit wasn’t much to gawk at, it was just some jeans, vans, and a long coat then topped with a scarf.

“Nothing really, just going out.” Kaminari and Sero who sat on the couch on their phones exchanged a suspicious glance with Mina and looked back to Kirishima.

Mina walked backwards, shivering as yellow eyes remained squinting at her friend. Didn’t take her long to break eye contact and crawl back into the giant blanket on the couch. Jirou smiled as she sat between Sero and Kaminari, keeping them all warm.

“I don’t see why someone can’t look nice before going out.”

Kaminari sunk deeper into the blanket for warmth, “I don’t know Jirou, half the time we see him in a sweater and jeans at best.”

“Dude, can’t deny the fact you look awesome though. Seriously, who is the lucky girl this evening?” Sero was teasing and the whole room knew, but Kirishima couldn’t just tell them he was going out with the bully of 1-A. Though if he did spill the beans on his plans for the night none of them would be surprised at all. They all had functioning eyes and ears, so it wasn’t hard to see how much the red head wanted Bakugou to be his.

Kirishima began to blush a bit, he scratched the back of his head and thought it was about time he told them. “Well I’m-“

“Shut up, and let’s get this show on the road, Shitty Hair.” And like that Bakugou stormed into the commons, stole the hand Kirishima was using to scratch the back of his head, and dragged him out the door.

The three clowns on the couch started a chorus of ‘Oooh’s after Bakugou took Kirishima’s hand. Jirou took this opportunity to text Bakugou, smiling as she sent him ‘Don’t mess it up.’.

After they had left the dorms, Kirishima took a minute to snap out of his blushing stupor before going back to his jolly self. It wasn’t long before he was skipping around Bakugou, talking about all the places they should visit in town that were decorated for the holidays. Sure the blonde wasn’t the most festive person Kirishima knew, but he was glad at the least that his antics made Bakugou smile.

Once they got into town it was Kirishima’s turn to take Bakugou by the hand and swiftly drag him wherever he pleased. First it was a few shops here and there where the two decided to buy some gifts for their friends, though it took Bakugou some convincing to care for their squad back at the dorms. Just when Bakugou thought he would have a moment of peace and some time to breathe, he’d be swept away by Kirishima without a moment’s notice.

Finally the red heads shopping spree was over, Bakugou could chill out without being on edge every time his crush tried to pull his arm off. The two settled on walking around town just to calm down, maybe make their way towards the Christmas tree Kirishima wanted to see so much.

“You saw the damn tree earlier when we were shopping. So why did we need to be closer?” Bakugou asked while he finished a taiyaki that Kirishima had bought him from a food stand.

Kirishima looked over to his side to his friend with wide eyes. The lights shining off the ginormous tree before them had made him even more distracting to Bakugou than he usually was. Kirishima finished off his taiyaki before speaking.

“Cause’ we only saw some of it earlier! Isn’t it better to see everything up close anyway rather than far away?” Ironically, Kirishima was a bit too close to his face for comfort but the poor boy had no idea.

Bakugou’s hands began to release small explosions as he furiously blushed, “Shitty Hair… ever heard of personal space?”

Realization hit Kirishima a bit too late, crimson eyes went wider than before as he started to blush. He had to come up with a reason and apology fast before he was sent flying into the atmosphere.

“Bakugou! I-I’m so sorry man, I didn’t mean in like that. I just was talking about the Christmas tree! Though I mean, you do look better up close-“

He continued to go on and on about how sorry he was, but there was nothing more annoying to Bakugou than Kirishima’s mumbling. Anger began to build more and more, hiding his face from the red head the angrier he got. Until it was too much to bottle up.

In one swift motion Bakugou grabbed the scarf that lay wrapped around Kirishima’s neck, “God, just shut up already Kirishima!”

Without a second thought Kirishima took the opportunity to close the short distance between their lips. The kiss was short and sweet, but if anything it did its job. Kirishima had finally stopped the nervous mumbling, Bakugou could finally rest easy knowing the feelings between them were mutual, and one more thing.

“You called me by my name!” Kirishima pulled Bakugou into a tight hug.

He stayed in his embrace for a moment, not returning the hug because something still didn’t register in his head right. Bakugou took Kirishima by the shoulders and pulled his deadly grip off him to look him in the eyes, “We just kissed and that’s all you have to fucking say about it?”

He grinned before pressing his forehead against the blonde’s, “Yep! I was going to confess sometime tonight anyway.”

Bakugou huffed, “You’re stealing my plans right from under me one by one lately, what the hell Kirishima?”

Kirishima’s only response to his lover was a cheeky smile and a laugh. Hands intertwined with one another, absorbing the breathtaking view before them and the atmosphere that accompanied it.

“I only learn from the best, Bakugou.”
