Young Steps

Summary:

Miyako was shaking now, scared. Her lip wobbled, barely suppressing a sob. Her feet, however solid they may had been five seconds ago, were now floundering around the carpet, like they didn’t know whether to retreat or to push on forward.

Oh, his poor pup. How could the world thrust this impossible decision on her now, so sudden? It was so unfair, and Katsuki’s inner Alpha howled brokenly. It hurt even more from the fact that they couldn’t make this decision for her. She had to decide her own fate now.

Work Text:

"Give me my pup."

"Mmm." Ashido thought for a moment, truly weighing her options. "Nahh."

Katsuki growled menacingly as the fucking pink alien sang an ambiguous song to Miyako — his fucking pup — while the little nine-month-old gurgled in happiness, completely content to be on her hip instead of her own sire"s arms.

"Ashido!"

"Whaaat?" Ashido blew a raspberry on Miyako"s cheek, eliciting another wave of giddy giggles. "Can"t you see we"re bonding here, Mr. Grumpy Cat?"

Miyako made a noise, and it almost — almost , just almost — sounded like she was agreeing with her.

Which was bullshit because it was time for their scenting session and she always fussed when she didn"t get it on time so why the fuck was she acting like her daddy wasn"t even there and goddammit he wanted to fucking cry—

"Oh, hey, hey," his mate crooned softly, headbutting his jaw like a cat. "Baby, don"t be upset."

"I"m not fucking upset," Katsuki sobbed.

Deku hummed, pouting sympathetically at his not glistening eyes and wobbly lip. He turned to Ashido and said, chuckling, "Hey, Ashido, cut it out, please? My Alpha is literally stinking up the whole apartment with his distress."

"Awww." Ashido faked a sniff, but when she looked over, her eyes softened slightly. She sighed dramatically and handed over the squirming pup. "Alright, alright, here you—"

Without waiting for her to finish, Katsuki snatched his daughter out of her arms and squished her to his chest, rumbling like an engine. The way he was scent marking her was more like him trying to fuse their cheeks together in a flurry of nuzzles, but he didn"t give a damn, not when his daughter was gurgling happily — albeit a little confusedly, too — from the act.

Ah, that was better. Her laughing because of him was right.

"Kacchan?"

He grunted, distracted with pressing kisses to his baby girl"s curls.

Deku laughed softly as he approached them, tentatively righting Miyako"s knitted sweater. "Nothing," he eventually mused before kissing his cheek.

Katsuki huffed, his skin pinking ever so slightly.

"Aww, Bakubro, it"s so cute to see you so attached to your pup!" Kirishima yelled from the kitchen.

"Shut up, Shitty Hair, my pup is dozing!" Katsuki yelled lowder.

Miyako whined from the noise, squirming in his arms. "Baba… Mmon."

"Aw, c"mere, Miyako," Deku cooed, scooping the fussy thing from Katsuki"s arms. "Did daddy startle you? Aw, it"s okay, sweetie."

"See what you fucking did, Kiri-shit!?" Katsuki bristled. "You scared her!"

"Bro!"

" You wanna fuck shit up, you piece of fucking —"

"Kacchan, please!"

"You sure have a lively home, huh, Midoriya?" Ashido laughed. "I"m almost jealous."

Deku sighed, rolling his eyes as the two Alphas argued ten feet from each other. "Honestly, it"s like I"m taking care of two pups in this house."

"I HEARD THAT, YOU SHITTY DEK—"

Miyako suddenly let out a high-pitched cry, her candy apple scent souring with distress, no doubt from the intense noise around her.

Omegan instincts kicking into action, Deku tucked his baby girl protectively to his chest, snarling and snapping his teeth at the two Alphas. All at once, Kirishima and Katsuki tensed and stopped, tilting their heads in submission in the face of a pissed off mother.

Katsuki was the first to clear his throat. "Sorry," he muttered, voice scratchy and dry.

Deku didn"t immediately hide his fangs, but his posture did loosen, and his forest fire scent began dissipating into a quiet camp fire. He huffed, turning away, and hoarsely cooed over Miyako"s hiccups.

Ashido clicked her tongue and wagged a finger at the two Alphas. "Looks like someone"s sleeping on the couch tonight."

"Shut the fuck up, Black Eyes," Katsuki snapped with no real venom. Tentatively, with his figurative ears flat on his head, he walked over to his mate and hooked his chin over his shoulder. "Deku."

"What." Came Deku"s curt reply.

Katsuki winced. He nosed the side of his neck, his scent gland, urging — pleading — his mate to stop being mad. "Dekuuuu."

"Ekuuu…" Miyako babbled back. She blinked her teary eyes for a second before she grinned and made grabby hands for her sire. "Baaaba…"

Katsuki scoffed, his heart not failing — never failing — to warm and melt at the sight of his baby girl"s radiating happiness. He gave her his index finger to grab, and she in turn squealed in delight and started biting his fingertip. He heard his mate laugh softly, and he couldn’t stop the affectionate rumble in his chest at the sweet sound of his family’s contentment.

“That’s more like it,” he purred, half-drunk from Deku’s pine scent and his pup’s crisp autumn one.

“Yaaaa!” Miyako giggled heartily.

Deku hummed and kissed her forehead. “Good pup. Love you so much, sweetheart.” He turned his head to his Alpha, his eyes shimmering like stars. Like he was in love all over again. One of his scarred hands came up and touched his jaw. “I love you, too, Ka—”

“Minaaaa, when are we gonna have our own litter?” Kirishima whined, effectively ruining the fucking moment.

“Shhhh! Ei, I swear to God—”

Katsuki growled, but before he could lunge at the brick-headed idiots, his mate let out a warning sound that sounded a lot like, “I’m going to make you sleep in our neighbor’s dog house if you startle my baby again, asshole.”

And if Katsuki whimpered at his Omega’s threat, then no one but Deku heard him and would live to tell the tale. “Yeah, yeah,” he muttered, clearing his throat to rid himself of any more embarrassing tremors. “Yo, fuckheads. Come on, stop fooling around and help me set the damn table.”

Dinner went on peacefully, for the most part. Katsuki and Kirishima bickered like they always did — like Alpha pack members always did — and their respective Omegas would roll their eyes at their silly “show of dominance”. Miyako, however, would clap and squeal, as if cheering on her daddy even though there was no way she could understand what everyone was saying. Still though, the sweet act made Katsuki puff out his chest in pride.

“I got my own tiny cheerleader and you don’t, Shitty Hair, so I win by default.”

“WHA—”

“Dada weee…!”

“Hell yeah, baby girl, you tell ‘em.”

“Baaaa!”

Deku giggled and bounced the excited pup on his knee. But after awhile, Miyako turned fussy and started squirming in his hold, so Deku excused himself from the conversation to put little Miyako on the floor with her toys. Once he deemed her safe and in line of sight from the dinner table, he went back to join the adults.

“Well, she’s being a handful today,” Katsuki quipped. “Did you give her sugar?”

“No, I didn’t. She probably just wants to bite on her toys. Her fangs are just growing in, after all.”

Katsuki frowned. He eyed his daughter playing on the floor, but when he made a move to stand up, his mate chastised him. “She’s fine, Kacchan,” he said. “Let her play. We’ll tuck her in after this, ‘kay?”

The Alpha"s mouth twisted in hesitation. Looking back at his baby, who was having an incoherent conversation with her Shouto doll, he willed his paternal instincts to calm down before settling back into his seat. "Yeah," he said eventually. "Okay."

Deku patted his hand, pleased, but his eyebrows drew together when their eyes met. "Is something wrong, Kacchan?" He asked quietly so Kirishima and Ashido wouldn"t overhear. "You"ve been acting weird all day. I mean, you haven"t really taken your eyes off of Miyako all morning. More so than usual."

Ah, so he caught on. "I dunno." Katsuki shrugged, frowning. "Alphan instincts, I guess. Mom said I"d get like this, like, all possessive and antsy and shit after I have my first pup. It"s normal. I think."

"Hmm. Well, it"s probably because you"re a new dad, Kacchan. You just want your family to be safe." Deku paused, and a sly smirk slowly graced his beautiful face. "To be honest, it"s kinda hot."

Katsuki snorted, both appalled and aroused at his unabashed confidence at the dining table. He leaned in close, brushing his lips against his Omega"s ear and whispering, "Down, Deku. We got guests here. Have you no shame, you horny piece of shit?"

"Mm, can"t help it when my mate"s all sexy when he"s protective."

"Really, guys? In front of our salad?"

Without breaking his heated eye contact with Deku, Katsuki flipped off a whining Kirishima and said, "My house, my salad. Now shut up."

Deku giggled, a sweet pink hue washing over the apples of his cheeks. "God, I love how poetic you get sometimes, Kacchan."

"Uhh…" Kirishima started. "Guys?"

"Wanna hear more of it, babe? I"ll give you a fucking sonnet tonight. What d"ya say we have my old hag babysit Miyako after this, hmm? That way I can really —"

"GUYS!"

"WHAT!?"

Kirishima and Ashido frantically pointed to the direction of the living room, and when the two mates turned, they saw something that had their jaws dropping into their soup.

Miyako was on her feet— Their nine-month-old little baby pup was on her feet !

They were all out of their seats in less than a second, screaming for someone to get a camera ready.

Miyako paid them no mind when they started crowding around her. She just scrunched her round face into a look of pure concentration as she wobbled on her unsteady legs, then inevitably fell back down on her butt.

Katsuki heart nearly broke when her eyes started to glisten from her first failed attempt. “Oh, Firecracker, it’s okay, daddy’s—”

His mate held his hands, which had moved without his knowing, and gave him a look. His mouth was a thin line, and his eyes were shining emeralds ready to burst into tiny crystals. He didn’t speak, and yet Katsuki heard his message loud and clear.

Heaving a rattling sigh, Katsuki nodded and twisted his fingers into his sweatpants. “Firecracker…?”

Miyako sniffed once. Her frame shook, like an autumn leaf dangling from its branch, but she didn’t let the cold wind take her away as she placed her tiny palms on the floor and pushed .

Everyone gasped and held their breaths as Miyako once again stood up to her full height. Her chubby arms flailed for a second, chasing control and balance, until gravity overtook her and she fell again.

Deku burst into tears then, burying his flushed face into Katsuki’s shirt. The Alpha in turn patted his head, ignoring the pang in his own heart and whispering calm words into his ear. Their two friends in turn sniffled next to them.

However, their loss didn’t last long. Miyako wasn’t about to give up. Too many people were counting on her. With a wordless huff, she crawled over to their coffee table, grabbed the edge, and hoisted herself up like a goddess out of a Greek story. With her blond curls pulled back in one messy bun behind her head, her eyes reflecting that of determination and power, and her nose smeared with a light sheen of snot, she yelled out a battle cry and took a step forward.

“M-Miyako…!”

The little pup whined as her limbs worked overtime — her arms were supporting her upper body with the table, while her legs were supporting her entire being. She was hunched over, full-on concentrating so she wouldn’t fall for a third time. Her posture suggested that she was small and frail, nothing more than a pup who had never walked in her whole goddamn life, but in Katsuki’s eyes, she was like her own breed of a hero, facing a villain that little have conquered. Fucking gravity.

“C-Come on, sweetie,” Katsuki stuttered. He cleared his throat and tried again, “Come on, baby, you can do it. One more step, okay? One more—”

“K-Kacchan—”

“No, I believe in her. She’s— She’s such a tough girl, I’ve seen her fling a whole Hawks doll straight out of her window. She’s a lot stronger than people give her credit for, okay? I believe in my pup.”

“Oh, damn, b-bro…” Kirishima sobbed, wiping his eyes with one arm while the other held Ashido’s trembling frame to him. “Having so much faith in your daughter— That’s so freaking manly , bro.”

Katsuki nodded. “Ain’t nothin’ gonna stop my baby girl from walking. She’s got my stubbornness, she can do anything she—”

Ashido gasped, nearly dropping the phone in her hands. “G-Guys, look!”

Gripping the edge of the coffee table for dear life, Miyako took a step forward. Then another. Then another. Then another.

“Oh my goodness!” Deku squealed, bawling harder than the time he stepped on a piece of lego. “M-Miyako, honey, you’re doing it! You’re doing it!”

“Baaaa!” Miyako yelled, triumph written all over her reddening face. But the expression only lasted for a second, because she had finally reached the point of no return.

The corner of the coffee table.

There was no more edge to hold on to now.

“Oh, no…”

Miyako was shaking now, scared. Her lip wobbled, barely suppressing a sob. Her feet, however solid they may had been five seconds ago, were now floundering around the carpet, like they didn’t know whether to retreat or to push on forward.

Oh, his poor pup. How could the world thrust this impossible decision on her now, so sudden? It was so unfair, and Katsuki’s inner Alpha howled brokenly. It hurt even more from the fact that they couldn’t make this decision for her. She had to decide her own fate now.

With bated breath, the adults waited for her next move, the phone camera capturing every agonizing second. Finally, after what felt like a lifetime, Miyako raised her head, looked straight ahead, and slowly let go of the coffee table.

“Oh—!”

His mate’s wet gasp was left unheard as Katsuki bolted across the floor. He dashed on all fours, then skidded to a crouch right in his daughter’s line of sight, a few feet away from her swaying body. Ignoring the proud tears streaming down his face, he spread his arms wide and called out, “Come to daddy, sweetheart!”

Miyako’s grassland eyes widened and shone in the sunlight, and the whole world stopped and held its breath. At that moment, there was nobody else but them, a father and his daughter, in the middle of making history. All his years of fighting crime and notorious villains, of helping civilians get out of dangerous situations, it all boiled down to this — This precious moment of supporting his pup in her dire time of need.

A second passed, then two, then half of his life, until Miyako took a leap of faith and screamed, “Baabaaaaa!”

The ball of sunshine walked — walked , she was walking — towards him with her arms outstretched in front of her, to him. In the distance, he heard his mate and pack clap and cheer, urging his daughter to step, step, step until she was damn near soaring through the air like she was this angel sent down from heaven, just for Katsuki to hold and protect for the rest of his life.

“Babaaa!”

“Miyako!”

Miyako closed the gap between them and crashed right into his embrace. The clapping and crying had reached a crescendo, making his heart swell and his walls crumble, until he could do nothing more but kiss his daughter’s head in adoration.

Japan could give him the title of number one pro hero right now and even that wouldn’t be able to top the feeling of pure pride he had in that moment alone.

The next day, Katsuki’s phone nearly blew up from the amount of notifications he was getting on social media. Turned out, his mate had posted the video of Miyako walking into a sobbing Katsuki’s arms, and the fans and press were going nuts over it.

Katsuki scowled as he bounced his daughter on his hip. He turned the screen towards her and said, "What do you think of this bullshit, Firecracker?"

Miyako blinked at the wall of comments. "Buuu…?" She murmured, then she made a face at it and shook her head. "Hyaaaabuuu!"

"Damn right." Katsuki huffed and tossed his phone on his bedside table. "Come on, let"s get something to eat, yeah?"

"Yeee!"

When Katsuki opened the door, Miyako suddenly squirmed in his arms. It took him awhile, but he eventually got the memo, and gently put his pup down on the floor, right on her feet.

Katsuki smiled down at her, and he gave her his index and middle finger to hold as they walked together to the kitchen.
