Chapter Text
After their Hunter had brought little Rian home, both the Marnier and sandmaster reasonably shouldn’t be surprised at what their lover brought home next.
Yet still seeing SkekMal come back with one extra gelfing babe then he had left was a shock. SkekSa and Rek’yr had spent the morning lazily in bed, then in the little river by their home, before begrudgingly dressing and returning to the kitchen to scavenge a meal.
They were in a good sated mood when SkekMal banged open the door as he crossed the threshold into their little cottage. Both dousan and pirate went to greet their Hunter.
“Welcome back Mal! How was your outing…… Oh! hello there little one! My Hunter, who is our guest here?” Startled for but a single moment at the sight of SkekMal carrying another childling into their home, Rek’yr quickly composed himself upon noticing the shy little lassywings burying her face against the Hunter’s chest. Rian’s tiny brown head poked out as he excitedly babbled at hearing his dousan father’s smooth voice. A tattooed palm reached and caressed his son’s chubby cheek before nuzzling their noses together.
Rian squeal in amusement smoky eyes wide and alit at the familiar touch and voice. However the little lassywings shied away from Rek'yr's touch.
Fluffy blue arms wrapped themselves around Rek’yr as Sa laid her head down atop his as she peered curiously at the two younglings.
“Maybe the tattoos love? Could be scarin’ the wee lassywings if she’s never seen the like before.” She offered as SkekMal settled both stonling and greenling on a rug between them. The tiny lassywings fussed over Rian offering him some greenery from her pocket before happily eat the strange fern.
“…..SkekMal? Why are both these babes now glowing blue?” SkekSa asked looking down pointily at both young gelfing playing on the floor between the trio, a pale blue light radiating from both oblivious childlings. The girl child gazed back at the Marnier, all the while munching on what appeared to be moss.
“Here little one let me see that.” Rek’yr asked in a soothing tone despite his alarm, gracefully kneeling before both giggling children. A blue and ginger tinted hand reaching out palm open as the tiny lassywings placed the strange flora gently in Rek’yr’s palm.
Peering at the strange flora Rek’yr A pair of talons plucked the moss, SkekSa eyed the moss critically before taking a quick nibble of it. Not a moment later as the Skeksis already polished azure features took on an illuminating hue of their own, casting her face in the light. The effect was quite striking the sandmaster had to admit, even if the recklessness behind the change was not to be quite as admired.
“My dear you are quite the radiate blue.” Rek’yr quipped, eyebrow raised bemused at his daredevil of a pirate mate. before turning back to the girl child and going about plucking leaves and dried dirt from her glowing head.
“Well, that’s new.”
“Seems to be wearing off with these two at the very least.” And indeed, Rek’yr spoke true as the light slowly dissipated from both children, soon leaving them in their natural hues once again. And leaving them both yawning and rubbing at their eyes.
“Time for bed I believe.” Carefully SkekSa scooped them both up into her broad warm arms taking both babes into Rian’s nursery and laying them down in a crib as she began to fuss over the newcomer.
“C’mon here darling, lets wipe that pretty face of yours clean now, eh? There we go! Aww look now there’s a pretty lassywings underneath all that muck and filth after all!” She cooed as wiped the messy face clean with her long tongue. Much to the childings squirming amusement and Rek’yr’s look of horror.
“Rek’yr love, go fetch me some of that oil you use for your hair, should help make this little fizzgig nest clean and shiny…..Oh! And probably all the brushes we own too.” The pirate queen quipped amused at the little lassywings tangled hair filled with mud and dirt. Thankfully the tiny gelf was to tired to put up much protest as both cleaned muck and dirt from her hair, turning it once again to a natural frizzy white strands.
“She looks vapran, just a tad different though with the green skin tone.” Rek’yr mummered softly tone curious as he observed both young childlings clinging to each other as the girl laid down, both tuckered out from the day’s events and letting out soft snores as they slumbered on, hands still intertwined.
“I’ll wager she’s from old Gotton stock.” SkekSa chimed in rubbing her chin in thought, it had been a hundred thrine since her Sifa had collected a Grotton but she knew well their coloring and large eyes.
“Grotton? I thought they went extinct?” Her sandling mate mused gazing up at her in confusion.
“Well this one suggests otherwise.” She shrugged not that much bothered.
It was not as if Thra was crawling with shadowlings, and this little one seemed to like the topside world well enough, if her tiny content smile was anything to go by.
Rek’yr peeked over into the crib, amber eyes softening at the sight of both babes curled around each other fast asleep, hands intwined together as their foreheads touched. Gently he reached down and joined hand with the slumbering duo, joining them in their dreamfast.
‘Dark caves awash with glowing spheres and cliffs flickered in and out of memory as unfocused memories flashed past. Rek’yr only just caught a face of two male gellings hiding the girl away at a tree’s roots whispering “Deet” before fleeing as screeching echoes neared. ‘
Rek’yr ceased the dreamfasting pulling his palm away and being brought back into the waking world.
“Deet…Her name is Deet.” He mummered as a tattooed indigo hand reached down to gently smooth the little lassywings now clean white strands from Deet’s face.
“She’ll be safe here with us.” SkekMal purred nuzzling his sandling mate.
“Aye she will.” A velvety voice hummed behind him in agreement as all three gazed down at the two childlings sound asleep holding each other.
And with that their odd family grew.
