Chapter Text
“Welcome to Gutenvell Port. Please check in at the Visitor Centre which is directly ahead as you exit the dock. If you require gifts or food, local shops are located within the port for you to purchase. If you have a cargo shipment due for arrival, please head for the Cargo Dock, located to the far right. Thank you, and we hope you enjoy your time on Gutenvell Island.”
This time, he has no suitcase by his side grating on his nerves as he walks along the wooden dock.
This time, his stomach was nauseous for one reason and one reason only.
His interview.
Yoongi had called in sick so that he could travel here today, and as his stomach churns with nerves, he can sort-of justify it.
He just really hopes none of the pack members are in the port this morning, since he’s told no one of his sudden choice to try for a new job, or the fact that he’s really thinking of leaving the city behind to do so.
Even Jimin is completely in the dark, and a part of Yoongi feels guilty at keeping the wolf there, but he’s not even sure himself if this is something that he really can see coming true.
It’s an interview, after all. Not an offered job.
Yoongi hasn’t even thought of the potential outcome of him getting the job. He’s still making this up as he goes along.
He’s being spontaneous, just like the humans are when it comes to uprooting their entire lives.
Yoongi enters the visiting centre, notes the two wolves at the welcoming desk, and heads for the nearest one.
“Hello, welcome to Gutenvell, how can I help you?” the male wolf greets him, the female smiling welcomingly at Yoongi with a hint of recognition in her gaze as she greets another wolf that had entered the centre behind Yoongi.
“I have an appointment with In Keera?” Yoongi says, and the wolf nods, grinning as he picks up a phone, pressing a button as he says, “I’ll let her know you’re here.”
Yoongi tries hard not to fidget, and rubs at his trousers and white shirt that is beneath his black blazer.
It’s still warm, so he’s trying hard not to start sweating through his attempt of looking smart for an interview.
“She’s on her way,” the wolf tells him as he hangs up. “She’s asked that you wait for her in the education exhibit,” the male points at Yoongi’s left where the museum part of the centre lies.
Yoongi thanks the male, and heads over to the empty space that hasn’t filled with tourists as they kill time waiting for an island wolf to come and get them.
Yoongi kills time by looking at the art drawings of how the island has developed and changed over the years, little stories of local history printed onto metal plaques.
He learns that, ‘Gutenvell’ in wulften island dialect means, ‘peaceful welcome’, and the island has always strived to maintain that meaning to how they greet outsiders.
‘Vellswa’, means, ‘peace on your journey’, and is often said as a formal goodbye rather than a casual one, and ‘Vellga’ means, ‘peace be with you’, and is the casual way to say goodbye, which made Yoongi smile because it fits with the support pack’s role of being temporary and casual.
He also learns that the Vellgee birth pack is named after the wulften word for, ‘sea breeze’, which is why they live and build using shipping containers to memorialise the dialect meaning, and the Velli birth pack is also named after the wulften word for, ‘tree’ which also matches their own preferences for using traditional builds of cabins.
It’s a warming feeling to know how the three packs remain true to the wulften meaning of their names.
“Min Yoongi?”
Yoongi startles at the female voice, having not been able to scent her beta smell due to the air ventilation, and nods his head in greeting at the beta that is dressed in smart casual wear and looks to be around his age.
“If you’ll follow me, we can start getting to know each other,” Keera smiles at him, her gaze warm and friendly, as she leads the way to an unmarked door and opens it to reveal a small, basic, room with a sofa, table, and another wall mural of the island.
“So, is this your first time to Gutenvell?” she asks as they sit down on the sofa, a respectful amount of space between them so that they don’t feel awkward sitting so close.
Yoongi shakes his head, choosing to be upfront and honest. “I was a guest here a month or so ago.”
Keera doesn’t look surprised or wary to hear that as she nods, leaning to retrieve the electronic tablet that was on the table in front of them.
“I’m glad you were honest about that,” she says carefully, and Yoongi knows what’s coming next, “since I ran your name through the island’s database and it came up as such. It’s protocol of me to make sure a wolf has a clean record, and not a questionable one.”
“What defies as such?” Yoongi questions, part intrigued, part annoyed that such information is accessible even after he’s left.
“Some wolves become a little fixated on some of the residents, some past guests keep returning trying to visit the support pack, for instance, which isn’t appropriate when that guest was discharged for an unhealthy fixation on a Support,” Keera explains, and Yoongi relaxes, finding himself agreeing with the measures the staff here take to keep residents and non-residents safe as she makes her point.
The job title of ‘Assistant’ is a broad one, Yoongi is beginning to suspect.
“I need my staff to be sharp with their senses, to be sharp with their gut response to when a wolf is being genuine or dishonest,” Keera continues, the interview beginning. “The visiting centre is the main hub of the port, so you will see a lot of tourists that have come to visit the port, and some wolves that come to visit the residents or support pack.”
“My work as a Data Collector and Monitor has pretty much refined my instinct for such,” Yoongi assures her.
“I’m aware, it’s why I was so eager to get you here for an interview. You’re our most skilled applicant so far, and from what I’m seeing, you know how to read a wolf.”
Yoongi nods, because it is true. He’s grown a sixth sense of knowing when a wolf is hiding something from him.
“But, what I am curious to learn is why you’re wanting a job here, on Gutenvell, when you already have one in the capital?” Keera questions, curious, as she tucks her blonde hair behind her ears, studying him with her sharp gaze.
“This isn’t going to sound great on my part, but I’m still questioning that myself,” Yoongi admits truthfully, making her grin as she appreciates his honesty. “I keep questioning if my current job is right for me now, if my heart is in the right place.”
“And you think your heart is in the right place here, on Gutenvell?” Keera muses.
Immediately, a pack comes to mind, faces he regards as friends, and more.
Gutenvell could easily become his home, because, to Yoongi, home is a feeling, not a place.
But, Yoongi has only ever known the perspective of living in a city, and while he knows that living in a wild pack would be never comfortable for him with the current state wild packs are, his time living on the island was brief, but still comfortable.
“It could be, if I allow myself to let it,” Yoongi answers, realising it to be true as he says it.
“You’d be giving up a lot of the conveniences the capital has.”
Yoongi shrugs. “I’m used to going without conveniences whenever I travel for my work.”
“You’d be receiving a smaller wage here, compared to there,” Keera points out, and again, Yoongi dismisses it with a carefree shrug.
“The cost of living is lower here, I’m sure I won’t even notice the difference.”
“So, you would live here, instead of commuting every day?” Keera asks, looking interested.
This is the part that Yoongi hasn’t really thought through.
Would he be comfortable living in a pack that he hasn’t met?
It’s not like he’d be alone on the island, the support pack is only up the road, technically. But, is it because of his connection to the pack that made his stay feel so welcoming? Would it still feel the same if he lived in one of the birth packs?
“Yes,” he hears himself answer.
Keera nods, and wakes up the electronic tablet in her hands. “Our current housing vacancy is with Pack Velli. The rented housing is a single-housing cabin, fully furnished with the basics - but you can bring your own furniture if you desire, and the birth pack has modern amenities, meaning you have access to the internet,” she teases lightly at the end, making Yoongi smile.
Yoongi knows that the Velli pack is Jin’s and Hoseok’s birth pack, so he knows that if he does take the job and move here, they can help him adjust to their birth pack.
“Is the housing paid automatically from my pay, or do I pay someone in the pack?” Yoongi questions, curious to how this works, at how being an outsider living in a birth pack functions.
“You’d be paying a fee to the pack Treasurer from your pay,” Keera answers. “The Velli pack is a very homely pack; our previous Assistant was sad to part from them.”
“Can I ask why they did?”
Keera huffs softly, smiling. “He found love on the mainland.”
Yoongi almost bites his tongue at how close that hits to home.
He may not be moving to Gutenvell solely for love, but he can’t deny that if it wasn’t for his connections to those here, he wouldn’t have entertained the job listing as thoroughly as he did.
“Will the residents feel comfortable having an outsider live and work here?” Yoongi asks, because he knows if they were in the wild regions, this would be a problem.
Keera shakes her head. “Nope. Most of the staff in the port are residents, but we have the few ones that commute from the closer islands to us.”
“But none from the mainland?” Yoongi notes, catching the detail.
“Gutenvellians are very open-minded, Yoongi. You’d be treated fairly,” Keera reassures. “I know if this were a wild pack setting, that would be different. But, here? You’d be treated equally; I can promise that.”
“I’ve been consistently told that island wolves and island-living are very much different to those on the mainland. Maybe living here as a resident, than as a guest, it will truly teach me if this is true.”
Keera’s gaze sparkles with amusement at that. “I’m sure it will.”
Yoongi stares as Keera swipes at the screen, opening up a document, before turning it around to show it to him.
“This is a more in depth look at what you will do here in the visiting centre,” Keera tells him as he takes it from her. “I want you to read through it, and decide if this position is one you will be committed to taking. It won’t be as exciting as your current job, but it’ll still keep you focused.”
Yoongi’s heart stutters slightly at the sureness to her tone, as if she’s already made her choice about him, as he reads through the document.
It’s almost similar to how he works now, but instead of him invading another’s personal business to collect data for the Board, he would be just logging it into to the island’s own database.
It wouldn’t go to a census board, it wouldn’t be taken to satisfy a treaty between humans and wolves, it would just be for the island’s security.
It’ll be less invasive, less intrusive to wolves’ lives.
Yoongi hands the tablet back to her.
“Well?” Keera asks as she shuts it off.
“I’d be committed to the job,” Yoongi says as his heart hammers in his chest, his mouth dry, his stomach churning with sudden nerves as he says it out loud.
Keera’s expression becomes pleased, and relieved.
And then she holds out her hand to him.
“I’d like to offer you the position, and for you to start as soon as you’re able to resign from your current job.”
Yoongi stares at her hand, feels his heart thump faster as he comes to the crux of his actions.
If he shakes her hand, he accepts this change and moves to Gutenvell for good. He’d be leaving behind one perspective, to grow another.
If he doesn’t, he goes back to the mainland, and returns back to his job of monitoring wolves across the country, constricted to the same perspective he’s been living for the last thirty years.
Yoongi’s hand is a little sweaty and shaky as he shakes her hand.
Keera grins as they shake hands, sealing the deal.
“Welcome to Gutenvell, Assistant Min Yoongi.”
Handing in his resignation isn’t the thing that terrifies him the most.
It’s telling his parents that he’s leaving the city, that terrifies him the most.
After so many years of his father hustling his ass to take life slower and to get a less dangerous job, and his mother telling him to not live like a human and to remember what it means to be a wolf, Yoongi is actually terrified of not only telling them that he’s quitting being a Monitor, but he’s also moving to Gutenvell Island too.
“You’re what?” Yoongi’s brother deadpans, the first to react to his sudden announcement, as all three of them sit in the restaurant, the setting evening sky casting a warm glow outside on the busy streets.
“I handed in my resignation and got a job on Gutenvell,” Yoongi repeats himself, his fork absently moving around his plate of pasta, as his parents continue to gawk at him with their own forks halfway up to their mouths.
“You got a job on the very island that you went to for support?” his brother confirms, and Yoongi nods. “You’re really uprooting your life for this alpha’s dick, huh?”
“Minwoo!” His mother reprimands in a sharp bark, recovering from her shock as she dumps her fork into her bowl, before focusing back onto Yoongi. “But your brother has a point, I hope you’re moving for yourself, and not just this wolf you’re very sweet on.”
“One, don’t talk about him in that manner, Minwoo. Two, he doesn’t even know I’m moving there. Three, things between us are already decided since we’re compatible mates and we both are actually cool with going in that direction at some point in our relationship. And four, I’m done with sticking my nose in so many wolves’ businesses. I just want a simple job, one that isn’t so invasive.”
“I mean, I’m relieved you’re finally packing in that job, especially after what happened to you, but are you sure moving to an island is the best change?” His father questions, his brown and green gaze not fully concerned, but getting there.
“Haven’t you both always told me and Minwoo to try living different styles, to not be confined to the cities?” Yoongi reminds them with a small shrug. “My time on Gutenvell was short, but I felt more comfortable living there than I have done during my brief stays in wild packs. I want to see if maybe island-living is for me.”
“As long as you’re sure,” his mother says slowly, still eyeing him up. “Does this mean we’ll finally be able to meet this alpha that has you so sweet for him?”
Yoongi knew it was too good to be true until one of his parents brought up meeting Jimin.
“You’ve been hiding him well, considering you gave him a true Beckoning gift,” his brother sniffs, still bitter that he lost the bet with their mother, which serves him right.
“I haven’t been hiding him, we both have demanding jobs,” Yoongi reminds them with a roll of his eyes.
“Well, now that you’ll be living on the same island as him, you have no excuse to not introduce us when we visit,” his father gangs up on him too, grinning as the air around the table returns back to normal, the shock vanishing.
“When do you leave?” His brother asks later in during the meal after their bellies are filled with delicious food.
“I still have to work a week’s notice, so maybe in two weeks’ time, by the time I sort out my apartment and storage.”
“Just use your father’s place as a dumping ground, he has plenty of room,” his mother huffs around her glass of wine, and his father rolls his eyes at the comment, used to it.
“I’ll charge you a fair rate,” his father teases him, making Yoongi snort from around his own glass of wine.
Considering that he was terrified of their reactions, he has to admit, the reaction he got was a lot more lacklustre to the one he had in his head.
But, he’d rather it went this way, than the way it went in his head.
He’s getting used to this ferry journey, even his stomach is in shock at how well they’re reacting to the motion of the sea against the ship.
“Are you close to docking? I can hear the ferry’s horn,” Jungkook questions through the phone call.
Yoongi ignores the way his hair is currently blowing around his face as he stands on the deck of the ferry, watching the view of Gutenvell as they near the port.
“Yep, I’ll be there in fifteen minutes or so,” he guesses, dragging his suitcase with him to the railing and leaning on it with his elbows.
“You’re the last guest to arrive, just so you’re aware,” Jungkook teases, despite knowing the reason why Yoongi was arriving to the island so close to the start of his and Taehyung’s Mating Ceremony this weekend.
Yoongi had been honest when he said that he was swamped with work, he just didn’t explain the full reason why the sudden amount of paperwork he’s rushing through to finish before his last day of work.
None of the pack know of his upcoming move to Gutenvell. He was planning on telling Jungkook and Taehyung alone, kinda as a gift, since Yoongi won’t get the chance to do so after the ceremony due to the couple following tradition in spending the night away from the pack, before leaving the next morning on their mating moon.
But now that he nears the port, Yoongi is slowly getting nervous to how they all will react to his news.
Even though he’s moving to Gutenvell to live in a style that he’s only had a small taste of, leaving behind the comfort of what he knows of city-living, the fact that he has wolves here that he knows and cares for did play a small part in it all.
He’s going to be relying on the guys to help him adjust to island-living, to learn from Hoseok and Jin about their birth pack so that Yoongi can make the best impressions on their families and neighbours, so he hopes that his move here doesn’t shock them too much.
He still would like to Zentt bond with Hoseok, Jin, and Namjoon, and being here, so close to the pack, just makes it easier to do so.
And, of course, it’ll be easier on his relationship with Jimin without the large distance between them.
He just really hopes they don’t find his decision intrusive of their already established dynamic, since he’s made the choice on his own, without asking them about it.
Which, in hindsight, is selfish of him, but, oh well, he’s signed the papers of residency now.
The very papers he has in his backpack.
“How are you feeling?” Yoongi asks the wolf, since in a few hours’ time, Jungkook and Taehyung will take their mating vows, and scar each other with a bonding mark of mateship.
“It feels like my heart is trying to put me in an early grave,” Jungkook laughs out, nervous and excited, making Yoongi smile. “These two weeks have crawled by. We both nearly eloped at several points.”
“Your mother would’ve happily strangled you if you robbed her of seeing her only pup take his mating vows,” Yoongi chuckles fondly.
“Which is why we gritted our teeth and kept to the deadline. Taehyung would feel bad about hurting his future mother-in-law if she tried to kill me.”
“Has his parents arrived?” Yoongi asks, curious to know if Taehyung’s own family has made it to the island, despite living so far away.
“His mother has. We knew his father wouldn’t come since he still carries a grudge that Taehyung gave up being a Lead Hunter in his birth pack to become a Support,” Jungkook grunts out, his excitement souring a little.
Yoongi shakes his head. You’d think a parent would be able to put aside their own personal feelings in order to share the happiness of their own pup becoming mated, but no.
“Well, it’s his loss. At least Tae’s mother is there, supporting you guys.”
“She’s just like my own – way too involved in a ceremony that isn’t theirs, but that is to be expected, me and Tae have no siblings, so of course our mothers are going to be overexcited about our Mating Ceremony.”
The ferry’s horn blows again, signalling to the port of their impending arrival, and Yoongi can see it in the near distance.
“I’m almost there, I can see the port,” Yoongi tells the wolf, and hears Jungkook moving around, the sound of a car door slamming shut.
“I’ll meet you on the dock otherwise I’m going to accidently drive the jeep into the car park wall due to how fidgety I’m being,” Jungkook huffs out, and Yoongi hides his panic well at the sudden change of plan for him to meet the wolf after he’s checked into the island.
He doesn’t want the Assistants to give away his surprise.
Yoongi makes a plan to distract the alpha as they hang up, hoping that Jungkook’s usual sharpness is non-existent today due to his mind being so focused on Taehyung to suspect a thing from Yoongi.
And Yoongi has a feeling his plan will go smoothly once he sees how much the wolf is bouncing with excess energy as Jungkook grins and makes a beeline for him as he comes down the ramp.
“Wow, you’re broadcasting your scent, pup,” Yoongi grunts out in a laugh as he tightly hugs the wolf back.
“Can’t help it, I’m too buzzed from my instinct being all giddy,” Jungkook says without any hint of shyness as he takes Yoongi’s suitcase, dragging it beside him for him.
Yoongi can’t stop staring at the wolf, at the visible excitement of a constant blinding smile, his body language very animated as Jungkook’s honeydew scent, softly layered with soft oranges, broadcasts his emotions.
“You’re too cute, how am I going to make it through the entire ceremony if you’re both like this,” Yoongi affectionately teases, nudging the wolf, and making Jungkook laugh.
“Jin has prepped plenty of tissues, so you’re good.”
Yoongi has a feeling he’s going to be needing a few.
“Ah, whilst I check in, can you track down some ear plugs?” Yoongi begins his plan of distraction as they pause outside the glass doors of the visiting centre.
Jungkook barely reacts at the random request as he nods, turning with Yoongi’s suitcase still in hand, to head for the few stores on the port, leaving behind a happy trail of honeydew and oranges.
Yoongi can’t help but smile at the departing male, endeared, before he rushes inside to check in.
Through the excitement coursing through his veins, and the slight giddiness he’s feeling as time slips closer to his and Taehyung’s Mating Ceremony, something makes him pause before he enters the store he was heading to.
“Ear plugs?” Jungkook repeats to himself, his mind gently pushing aside his excitement as he processes Yoongi’s request. “Since when does he sleep using ear plugs?”
Jungkook turns, confused, to stare at the visiting centre where the omega has disappeared inside.
Did he hear wrong?
Jungkook honestly wouldn’t be shocked if he did, his head has been up in the clouds of euphoria.
He’s known Yoongi for nearly four years, and not once, during the times they’ve passed out in each other apartments after a late night of socialising, has he ever seen the wolf reach for ear plugs.
Yoongi isn’t a light sleeper, either. Once he’s out, he’s out, so…..why the ear plugs?
Jungkook drags the wolf’s suitcase with him as he heads for the visiting centre to track down the older wolf.
Maybe he did hear wrong, but there is no harm in checking.
Humming to himself as he steps into the ventilated building that blocks out scents, Jungkook spies the omega standing at the desk, filling in forms.
Jungkook tilts his head at that. Yoongi shouldn’t need to fill anything in since he and Taehyung took care of the guest paperwork for the ceremony.
Sliding the suitcase smoothly across the floor, and making little noise as he heads for Yoongi’s back, he waits until the wolf has finished scribbling on the forms before making his presence known.
“Just to confirm, your moving date is a week today, yes? Keera needs to know if you’ll be shipping anything with cargo, as well,” the female omega questions Yoongi, and Jungkook feels confusion sit above him like a giant question mark as he frowns at Yoongi’s nodding head.
“She sent me pictures of the cabin, so I’ll be bringing some storage with me,” he hears Yoongi answer, and that question mark above Jungkook’s head pulses louder.
“What cabin?” he blurts out, startling Yoongi so much, his hip bangs into the front of the counter of the desk area as he spins to gawp at Jungkook.
“How long have you been there?” Yoongi demands, taken completely off guard, and Jungkook narrows his gaze as suspicion runs hot through him.
“How long have you been hiding the fact you’re moving here, because that’s what you mean by shipping ‘storage’ to a cabin you’ve been shown pictures of, right?” Jungkook bluntly demands back, noting that the female omega behind the desk make a slight, ‘oh crap’ face as she leaves them to it.
Yoongi lets out a long, very guilty-sounding sigh, if you ask Jungkook.
“I was going to tell you properly.”
“When? When you come knocking on the pack gate for some sugar?” Jungkook huffs back, trying hard not to let hurt build in his chest due to his best friend hiding something as big as leaving the city and moving to Gutenvell from him.
Yoongi waves Jungkook away from the desk area, so that they’re not hogging the space for the other wolves coming in, and also so that they’re not drawing further attention to themselves.
“None of this was planned, it was all born from a whim of looking up how the job market was looking, and then finding a job here, as an Assistant in the visiting centre,” Yoongi’s voice is honest, Jungkook can’t deny that, but he’s still miffed that the wolf kept this from him for so long.
“You could’ve told me. I can keep secrets,” Jungkook grunts, folding his arms across his chest, gaze still narrowed on the wolf. “We’re Zentt bonded, for Lura’s sake. I-”
“I didn’t keep it from you because I didn’t trust you, Jungkook. I kept it from everyone because I was making it up as I went along,” Yoongi cuts him off gently, but firmly. “I applied for the job thinking that I’d be overqualified, I came for the interview thinking I wouldn’t get it, and now I’m here, working my notice days, selling my shit, organising what needs to be shipped here. It’s been fast, this whole process.”
“Also, I’m not going to rain on your parade of excitement,” Yoongi adds tenderly. “I was waiting for a lull to break the news to you and Taehyung before you guys leave for your mating moon.
“Idiot, it wouldn’t have rained on anything. It may have caused us both to become emotional at hearing you move here, be closer to the pack, but we wouldn’t have felt like you were stealing the spotlight,” Jungkook scolds the older wolf, pout very evident even to his own ears, but he doesn’t care.
“I haven’t planned this entire thing out well,” Yoongi admits with an embarrassed chuckle. “I chose the wrong thing to be spontaneous about, honestly. I’ve never been so fucking stressed.”
“When you feel the urge for change, you follow,” Jungkook reassures the wolf, because he can remember his own spontaneous choice to uproot his life to come live here with Taehyung.
“Yeah, well, pretty sure this is a life crisis, we’ll see,” Yoongi jokes, not really meaning it, but there is a hint of honesty to it, which again, Jungkook can relate to feeling when he was in that headspace nearly two years ago.
“You’re going to fit right in with island-living, Yoongi,” Jungkook reassures softly, throwing his arm around the shorter wolf’s shoulders as he gently nuzzles Yoongi’s hair. “You’re going to see that the chaotic, cagey way, of living on the mainland is hard to go back to once you’ve lived out here.”
“Well, at least out here I’m not going to be as alone as I have been back in the capital,” Yoongi admits as they head back for the desk so that Yoongi can complete whatever he needs to complete.
Jungkook – secretly – is elated at hearing that. It was one of his biggest worries when he left that Yoongi would be lonely, that the time they spent outside of work and even during it, would be filled with silence, instead of comradery.
But now that Yoongi is going to be on Gutenvell, not only does he have Jungkook to hang with once more, but also Taehyung, Jimin, and the rest of the pack too.
He’ll be so much closer to them all, that Yoongi will have ample time to connect with each wolf as he Zentt bonds with them.
“Should I call for Taehyung to meet us outside the gate so that you can tell him in the jeep? The pack grounds are busy with wolves,” Jungkook asks as they settle into the jeep once Yoongi has finished finalising details about his move here.
“Yeah, that’ll be better,” Yoongi says as he snaps his seatbelt on, and Jungkook retrieves his phone from his pocket to call his soon-to-be mate.
“Yes, the love of my life?” Taehyung’s giddy voice greets him, causing an automatic rush of love and giddiness of his own as he smiles.
“I need you to meet us outside the gate to the pack grounds, but do so sneakily,” Jungkook says as they sit in the car park.
“I can do sneaky,” Taehyung hums, and Jungkook smiles at the lack of hesitance in Taehyung’s tone to do such a random thing.
“We’ll see you in a bit,” Jungkook says, waiting for an answering hum, before hanging up.
“The look on your face there was sickeningly cute, just so you’re aware,” Yoongi teases fondly, making Jungkook’s smile grow as he starts the jeep.
“Just wait until you and Jimin are this grossly infatuated with each other,” Jungkook teases back as he drives them through the port, heading for the gates.
“Even then, I think we’ll never be as cute,” Yoongi snorts back playfully, and a quick glance at the omega confirms the little hint of pink to his cheeks.
“We’ll see,” Jungkook hums, already knowing the truth, since it’s already to blatant now.
Seeing Yoongi and Jimin together just makes Jungkook’s chest ache with happy relief that both wolves have found another that they not only deeply connect with, but also share similar backgrounds and opinions.
For so long, both have been alone, just waiting for the sun and moon to gently align their paths so they can meet and connect.
Jungkook firmly believes that they’re destined mates, just like how he and Taehyung are.
Jungkook smiles to himself as he recalls the night that he and Taehyung bit each other, triggering the bonding instinct for them to become mates.
It started when Taehyung sat him down, half scaring the shit out of Jungkook from the serious look in his eyes, as he grasped Jungkook’s hands and asked Jungkook one question.
“Have you heard of Mayt bonds?”
Jungkook frowns, lost. “A what?”
Taehyung nods, agreeing with a thought passing through his mind, still looking deadly serious that it’s now causing Jungkook palpitations as he sits there, sweating from growing anxiety.
“I was going to save this for our Mating Ceremony, but I want you to know now,” Taehyung begins, and Jungkook forces himself not to get fixated on the mention of a Mating Ceremony they have slowly been discussing during the last few weeks, and to concentrate on what his partner is leading to.
“We both know we’re compatible mates, the way we both feel for each other doesn’t sit on the same level as the way we feel with our Zentt bonds, and that’s because we’re feeling a very different connection, a different bond, one that is rare.”
Jungkook’s heart thumps fast and hard in his chest. “Rare?”
Taehyung smiles softly, love loud and clear in his gaze and tone as he whispers, “destined, some would say.”
Jungkook’s mouth is drying the longer he hangs on the edges of his partner’s words.
“What we have, what we feel, Kook, is a Mayt bond,” Taehyung whispers tenderly, his hands reaching up to cup Jungkook’s cheeks, cradling him close, as their scents feed each other, linking together.
“Still don’t know what that really means, love,” Jungkook blurts out, making Taehyung giggle.
“It means that it’s a bond that doesn’t follow the same pull of a Zentt bond being triggered,” Taehyung explains softly, leaning in to nuzzle Jungkook’s nose in a slow caress, “a Mayt bond is triggered in the form of the wolf being solely fixated on the scent of another wolf, and instinct guiding the connection to bond via the constant exposure to that wolf’s scent. Sound familiar?”
Jungkook swallows thickly as he nods, slowly nuzzling back. “Yeah, that sounds very familiar,” he whispers back.
“Mayt bonds were seen as gifted unions from the sun and moon, back in the day. A destined connection between two wolves,” Taehyung’s lips brush against Jungkook’s parted ones.
“Like how humans believe in soulmates,” Jungkook says, making the connection, and feels the vibration of Taehyung’s hum against his open mouth, breathing it in.
“We’re soulmates, Jungkook. The sun and moon destined for us to be together.”
Jungkook inhales deeply through his nose at that, feeling his chest push and ache at the same time, feels his instinct throbbing to be closer to Taehyung despite the fact they’re literally breathing in each other.
“Then, let’s be together,” Jungkook thickly whispers, feels emotion clog up the back of his throat, as he forces his closed eyes to open to see how Taehyung reacts.
Taehyung’s own eyes slip open, and Jungkook sees it in those warm brown and light brown eyes, the wolf’s answer.
“Will you be my mate?” Jungkook hears himself utter the words, hears them hang in the air around them.
Taehyung tilts his head, displaying his neck, the area of skin where his scent gland lies beneath, skin that they’ve only ever kissed and suckled on, but have never bit each other there.
“Thought you’d never ask me.”
Jungkook hears the words.
Feels them lock in his mind, feels the rush of euphoric happiness and relief.
And then he feels his teeth sink into the skin directly above the root of soft oranges, can taste it on his tongue as he hears Taehyung moan, arching against him, as a deep imprint of teeth, of intention triggers a rush of burning need through Jungkook.
He’s barely broken from Taehyung’s neck when he feels the back of his hair being tugged, feels his body display his neck for Taehyung to bite him in return, hissing at the intense throbbing that blooms in his scent gland as Taehyung growls against his skin.
His scent gland pulses like it has its own heartbeat, both of their scents flooding their den with mixing tones of excitement, need, and relief.
The kiss they share is filthy with headiness, both of them panting into it as they cling to each other as their bodies react to a new instinct being triggered, filling their heads fast with the urge to mate, to claim each other, to shout it from the clouds that they are one.
They’re going to be official mates.
Jungkook moans deeply into the kiss as Taehyung climbs onto his lap, one hand in his hair, the other protectively clamped over the bite that he’s left behind on Jungkook’s scent gland as he growls in reply to Jungkook’s heady moan.
Taehyung will be his.
And he will be Taehyung’s.
Taehyung’s husky giggles fill the air as Jungkook flips them, pinning Taehyung to the sofa they’re on as he kisses his own bite print left on Taehyung’s neck.
They’re each other’s now.
Now, they just have to seal the deal.
“You with me?”
Jungkook blinks from his thoughts, his memory of the night his entire world shifted and became grounded at the same time, as he glances over at Yoongi’s questioning form as he turns them down the road leading the support pack.
“Sorry, my head is chaotic mess of its own,” Jungkook apologises with a soft laugh, and Yoongi smiles, taking no offense from the sudden silence he got from Jungkook.
Seeing Taehyung ahead only further causes Jungkook’s scent glands to throb, the need for a heavier imprint, a scar of their bonding as mates, still throbs ever strongly.
Jungkook eases the jeep to a stop, and Taehyung waves at Yoongi as he moves to climb into the back seats of the jeep.
“So, why the covertness?” Taehyung questions immediately once he’s inside the jeep, making Jungkook smile as Yoongi shifts in his seat to look at the beta properly.
“I actually need to tell you something without other ears hearing just yet,” Yoongi reveals, and Jungkook keeps the engine running to further block out the pack members hearing range in case they’re close to the gate.
He’s learnt during his time living here that his stunted senses are like a pup’s compared to the guys and the other island wolves, so he’s picked up some habits for when he wants privacy.
As he listens to Yoongi reveal his move to Gutenvell and his change of job, Jungkook watches his soon-to-be mate’s expression in the rear-view mirror, watches the shock quickly gives way to glassy-eyed glee as he all but yanks Yoongi into a hug between their seats.
“I’m glad we’re not going to be around when you break the news to Jimin, he’s going to cry a stream, and we’d be adding to it,” Taehyung sniffles out once they’ve both calmed down, all three of them choked up – Jungkook from seeing both wolves he cares about cry, and Yoongi crying from seeing Taehyung cry.
They’re a mess, but it’s a nice, soft, mess.
But, Jungkook agrees with Taehyung. The very second Yoongi reveals to Jimin that he’s moving here, is the very second that there will be no dry eyes around them.
“I really hope he doesn’t get too weirded out by my sudden moving here,” Yoongi admits nervously, sharing some of his worries, as Jungkook presses for the gate to open once everyone is composed.
“Honestly? I don’t think he’s even allowed himself to think of a future of you two living together, never mind up the road from each other. I think that he thinks this is going to be taken away from him,” Taehyung shares softly, tone sad, and Jungkook can see why Taehyung thinks that because they all know of Jimin’s low confidence in believing that he deserves love for him, and not his rank.
“We share a Mayt bond, of course we’d have ended up living together at some point,” Yoongi huffs out softly. “But I get what you mean. It’s still very new to us both.”
“Before long, it’ll be you two calling a Mating Ceremony,” Taehyung teases as Jungkook turns off the engine, the jeep parked.
All three of them pause as they get out of the jeep as the frosted door to main building opens to reveal Namjoon who is eyeing them with suspicion.
“You either couldn’t wait to be back at each other’s side so you walked to the port, or you three are plotting something,” Namjoon greets them as Taehyung pulls out Yoongi’s suitcase.
“Someone is paranoid,” Yoongi says in response, taking his suitcase from Taehyung.
“Hmm, this someone also has a great sixth sense for when bullshit is present, but I’ll allow it to exist for the meantime – you two, you both need to get prepped for the scarification part of the ceremony, so go get cleansed,” Namjoon says as he grabs Jungkook and Taehyung’s arms and all but drags them through the door first, a fond smile on his face as he does so.
And they’re immediately accosted by their mothers who are saying the exact same thing as the omega did.
Jungkook shares a tired, but fond, look with Taehyung as they both tune out the excitement.
Only a few more hours, is what both of their expressions say.
In a few hours’ times, they’ll be mates.
Jungkook can’t fucking wait.
Yoongi slides his suitcase around the noise of bodies, and out through the pack member side of the communal building where he effortlessly picks up on the recent scent trail left behind his boyfriend as he heads for his den.
And grins as his heart gives a little excited thump as Jimin immediately pokes his head out through the open door of his den, scenting Yoongi’s arrival up his porch.
Abandoning his suitcase on the porch steps, Yoongi meets Jimin halfway as they embrace each other tightly, both letting out soft sighs as they inhale each other’s scent, before greeting each other with a soft, light, kiss.
“You look good. You’re getting used to the journey,” Jimin teases softly as he nuzzles Yoongi’s cheek with his nose.
“Or, it’s all because I’m seeing you again,” Yoongi shamelessly flirts with instead, enjoying the little flash of delight that shone in the male’s brown and ice blue gaze.
“Or that,” Jimin agrees, flirting back, and kisses Yoongi one last time before their embrace breaks so that the alpha can move to lift Yoongi’s suitcase the rest of the way up the porch steps.
“Come on, time is moving fast and I still have yet to shower,” Jimin grins as he leads Yoongi into his den.
“I haven’t seen Hoseok or Jin, where are those two hiding?” Yoongi questions as Jimin takes his suitcase through into his bedding area of his den.
“Hoseok is at the meadow where the ceremony is being held, doing last minute checks with Jin’s mother since she is the one officiating the ceremony, and Jin was making the healing balm, the last time I saw him this morning. He wanted it as fresh as possible but with time for it to breathe,” Jimin tells him as he lines Yoongi’s suitcase up against his wall.
Yoongi hasn’t ever been to a Mating Ceremony, so he honestly has no idea just what goes on behind the scenes to make it run smoothly.
All he knows is that vows are exchanged, the scarring part of the bonding happens, and that is it.
“What are you wearing to it?” Yoongi questions as he sits down on Jimin’s nest, watching as the wolf moves around his space as he gets things ready to change into after his shower.
“This,” Jimin says as he grabs a hanger from his clothing railing, showing Yoongi a pale blue, cotton, blouse with short sleeves, “and I have the matching shorts too.”
Considering the fact that Yoongi was completely ignorant to the fact that there was a clothing tradition connected to Mating Ceremonies….until he stepped a foot into a store and asked what would be best to wear to such, he learnt – through the kindness of the clothing assistant that spent the next twenty minutes hunting down an outfit that was appropriate to the season and setting of the ceremony – that guests wear a colour that the couple finds soothing, and the couple wear white to symbolise the fresh start of the new chapter in their relationship.
Yoongi’s own outfit was a deeper shade of blue, a stiffer fabric, but the same cut and shape of the blouse Jimin has.
“You know, it makes no sense that they wear white when blood is going to be involved,” Yoongi muses as he relaxes on Jimin’s bed.
“They take it off before they do that part of the ceremony,” Jimin huffs in a giggle. “The white is for the vows, skin is for the scarification.”
Yoongi makes a little, ‘oh’ sound, and Jimin sends him a fond smile as he disappears into the bathroom.
Due to spending time with each other, they’ve grown accustomed to showing some skin around each other after showering.
It had been a rush during Yoongi’s heat when Jimin stepped out of the shower, smelling so strong of his own scent, that Yoongi barely gave the wolf time to dry himself before he was trying to plaster his body against his as if he could absorb the male’s scent all to himself.
Since then, both of them are completely at ease with seeing flashes of skin.
Yoongi listens to his music as he listens to the shower run, the door open to the bathroom to allow the air to not be as suffocating in there from it, as he unpacks his suitcase.
He puts his own outfit onto the bed, still folded, before dragging his backpack to him that still has evidence of his newly acquired residency on the island.
Yoongi plans on telling Jimin the news tonight after the ceremony, here in the comfort of the male’s den, and then telling the others tomorrow.
But, he’s still trying to decide on how to break the news.
Yoongi shuts his backpack as the shower turns off, and grabs a towel from where Jimin had shown where he keeps them, and waits for his turn to cleanse off the strong scent of the sea on his hair and skin.
“Your hair is so long when it’s wet,” Yoongi comments with a smile, still not used to seeing the alpha’s usual wavy hair so straight as Jimin exits the bathroom with a towel wrapped around his waist, and another on his shoulders to catch the water from his dripping hair.
“Give it minute, it’ll soon dry into its usual wavy mess,” Jimin grins as he begins to scrub at his hair, despite Yoongi telling him that just encourages the tangles.
Yoongi undresses in the bathroom, shoving his clothes into the hamper along with Jimin’s, and makes quick work of showering.
With the bathroom smelling of cedarwood and peonies, it satisfies the deeper instinctual part of Yoongi’s chest as he exits the bathroom, clad in a towel as he gently pats his hair dry.
Jimin is sitting on his bed, in front of the fan, as it cools and dries him.
“Scoot over,” Yoongi orders playfully as he joins the male on his bed, noting that his own clothes he had put here are now hanging up along with Jimin’s own outfit.
“We have about an hour to kill,” Jimin tells him, righting his towel that covers his modesty, and Yoongi nods as he makes grabby hands at the wolf for his comb.
Jimin straightens at the offer, and hands over the wide-toothed comb, letting Yoongi gently brush out the tangles caused from his rough hair drying.
Just like Yoongi loves his hair being played with, he learnt that Jimin loves his hair to be brushed, even in his wolf form, he had admitted to being a completely sucker for it.
They sit there, in Jimin’s nest, listening to Yoongi’s music, both enjoying the soothing lull of sharing affection as they take turns in combing through each other’s hair.
And when Jimin softly kisses Yoongi as he brushes Yoongi’s straight hair whilst sitting facing Yoongi, it makes Yoongi’s chest flutter and ache with growing love for the wolf as he kisses the alpha back.
By the time they’re ready to join the others in walking to the meadow where the ceremony is taking place, the mood between Yoongi and Jimin can only be described as soft as they hold each other’s hands, following the others as Taehyung and Jungkook take the lead, both wearing identical white blouse with a low neck line and a long hem that hits their thighs, almost hiding their shorts as a result.
Yoongi doesn’t recognise the clearing they come upon, a small meadow of daisies and lush grass that hits their calves, and with the gentle sound of crashing waves from the open view of the sea hitting against the cliff the meadow is connected to.
It’s almost serene with soft beauty.
Yoongi follows Jimin’s lead, trusting the alpha’s knowledge of how this works, as Jungkook’s parents, Taehyung’s mother, Namjoon, Hoseok, Jin, and a few other faces Yoongi doesn’t know but they speak with an island accent lilt to their voices, as they make a circle around Jungkook, Taehyung, and Jin’s mother.
Everyone has equal view of the couple, and Yoongi can’t help the tightness in his chest at seeing how much Jungkook and Taehyung are desperately trying to keep their cool, even as they tightly hold their hands together, standing in front of each other, never taking their eyes off each other.
“We’re gathered this evening to witness the love and adoration that these two wolves have for each other to grow into a full Mayt bond,” Jin’s mother speaks with soft, but beautifully articulated, her spicy scent stronger than Jin’s own.
“A Mayt bond represents a connection so right, so true to your soul, that the love grown from nurturing a Mayt bond is the completion of two wolves uniting their spirit into one.”
Yoongi blinks at that, feels Jimin gently tighten his grip on Yoongi’s hand, and a quick glance at the alpha reveals the wolf has a fierceness in his gaze that makes Yoongi’s heart stutter at the silent intensity.
“Both come from different backgrounds, wild and city, but here on Gutenvell, they found home,” the female alpha continues, and Yoongi swallows at how deep his heart takes those words that aren’t even aimed at him, but still feels himself connect to them.
Jin’s mother reaches into the delicate-looking bag that hangs across her body and is made of layered rope, and pulls out a delicate-looking piece of aged wood.
Yoongi watches as Jungkook and Taehyung place their left hands onto the wood, their fingertips touching, but not overlapping, as she holds the wood between them.
“From the bark of the oldest tree on Gutenvell, a tree that spans the years of when stories of Lura came to us, I bless these two wolves with the protection of the moon, and the love of the sun,” Jin’s mother speaks softly, almost in a whisper, and the hair on Yoongi’s body stands up as the wind shifts, feeling a touch too cold for the current humidity.
“You may exchange vows,” Jin’s mother smiles gently at Jungkook and Taehyung.
Yoongi isn’t the only one to softly chuckle at the little sounds of excitement that leave the couple.
“Age before beauty,” Jungkook teases softly, making Taehyung bark out a laugh as they both grin at each other, their hands still on the wood, and also holding each other’s hand.
“Alphas go first,” Taehyung teases back, smiling so lovingly at the alpha that Yoongi feels like he should look away to give them some privacy.
“This alpha didn’t when he first met a beta that stole the air from his lungs,” Jungkook says softly, and Yoongi’s the one tightening his hand on Jimin’s, feeling himself choke up as tears prick his eyes as he listens to the wolf speak with so much care.
Taehyung bites his lower lip, his eyes becoming glassy-looking as he nods for Jungkook to continue since he had paused at seeing the build-up of tears.
“I vow to continue being there when you’re tired from a hard day of supporting another, sharing yourself in such an emotional way, that when you’re the one that needs supporting, I’ll be right there to hold you and give you it,” Jungkook vows thickly, his own voice full of tears and love. “I vow to be there with you on long runs through the forests, no matter how far they are, I’ll be with you every paw of the way.”
Taehyung doesn’t wipe away the slow trailing of tears that fall from his eyes as he smiles at Jungkook’s vows, just sniffs softly as he takes his cue to share his own.
“Maybe I should’ve went first,” Taehyung jokes, sniffling harder, and again, they all smile and chuckle at the wolf’s humour.
“From the moment you sat your ass inside the jeep, I knew right then and there, you were the one for me,” Taehyung begins, clearing his throat a little to make it less rough. “I knew that this alpha from the capital, smelling of honeydews, and looking like a couture model, was the one for me.”
Jungkook shakes his head in denial of the model comment, grinning despite it.
“I vow to continue protecting you when you think that you don’t deserve it. I vow to sink my claws into every wolf that dares to try and belittle what you mean to me, what we both mean to each other,” Taehyung passionately vows, and Yoongi can hear that threat of violence loud and clear. “I vow to be by your side, always and forever. You’re stuck with me now, love.”
Jungkook lets out a wet sounding laugh, and Yoongi loses the battle of holding back his own tears as he sees the alpha’s cheeks wet with his own.
A quick look around, and Yoongi sees that there isn’t a dry eye in sight.
“With the blessing of the sun and the moon, your vows have been heard, and you now may proceed with marking each other as your mate,” Jin’s mother states softly as she takes the wood away from them, and places it back into the dangling down at her hip.
The circle shifts at that, and Yoongi watches as Jin steps forward with two, extremely sharp, knives, both small enough to comfortably sit in your hand, as Taehyung and Jungkook take off their white blouses.
“Where will your bonding mark lie?” Jin’s mother asks as she takes the knives from her son, and Jin returns back to the circle.
“The left side of our necks, on top of the bite, over the scent gland,” both of the wolves say at the same time, perfectly rehearsed.
“First, bite each other, but do not draw blood,” Jin’s mother directs, and Yoongi watches, completely enraptured by this part of the ceremony as Jungkook tenderly embraces Taehyung and bites down to Taehyung’s neck first, causing the beta to make a low sound in his chest as he wraps his arms around Jungkook’s waist, holding him close so that he can do the same back.
“Now, while you both are still feeling the rush of the bonding instinct, lightly scar your bite into each other,” the female alpha orders as she hands them each a knife.
And, at the same time, both wolves moving as if in some sort of trance that is magnetizing them to mimic the other so perfectly, they raise the small knives up to the side of each other’s neck, and presses the blade lightly into the skin.
A collective hush falls over the clearing as both wolves’ hiss as blood is drawn, both following the imprint of teeth they feel lingering over the skin of their scent gland, their scents rising, spilling out, as does more of their blood as they carve the mating mark into each other’s skin.
Jin’s mother supervises them, making sure the knives don’t dig in too deeply to be dangerous to their safety, whispering encouragements as they near the end of scarring each other.
And as their hands drop to their sides, silver blades slightly coated in blood as it trails down the back of their hands, their bonding marks bleed as both wolves share a euphoric smile.
“Congratulations, you’re now officially mated,” Jin’s mother announces with a blinding smile, and as one, the entire clearing erupts with cheers and howl-like sounds made around cupped hands.
From there, it’s all a blur of excitement and movement as the knives are taken away, healing balm is given to the newly mated couple, and cheers for them as Jungkook and Taehyung run off into the forest, hand in hand, to complete their ceremony with a run in wolf form.
Parents are crying, the pack members and unknown friends are chattering about how soft the ceremony was, the mood light and celebratory as bodies return back to the support pack’s pack grounds where a small buffet is waiting, as well as alcohol suitable for a wolf’s tolerance.
The air is filled with a blanket of soft joy and excitement, completely infectious, and when the mated couple return with blood crusted bonding marks, the celebration truly kicks into high gear as everyone fusses and congratulates the couple.
By the time Yoongi and Jimin stumble up to the alpha’s porch, both giggling and leaning on each other as they still feel the effects still lingering in the air of love and joy, the moon is high in a star-filled sky.
“Careful,” Jimin huffs out fondly as he helps navigate the way through the curtain that separates his den into two, the soft glow of the light from the living area enough to help appease Yoongi’s discomfort of the dark.
“How much do you want to bet that in the morning we’re going to find Namjoon and Hoseok in the office, looking highly guilty,” Yoongi says as he sways a little as he pulls off his shirt, the stiffer material irritating his skin after wearing it outside in humid air and then going inside to a cooler building.
“I’m not making that bet; I know for a fact those two are going to fuck, ‘scuse my language,” Jimin snorts out in a laugh as he turns on another lamp in his bedding area.
Yoongi throws his shirt onto his closed suitcase, as he swallows back a yawn. “Jin is going to kill them.”
“Probably, but the alpha saw them with his own eyes too, so it’s not like he’s going in there blind tomorrow,” Jimin says as drops down onto his bed with a long, tired, sigh.
Yoongi climbs onto the bed, lying down beside the alpha, and inhales the male’s scent with an agreeing hum.
Jimin turns his head, and rolls onto his side so that he can slip his fingers through Yoongi’s hair, pulling him close for a soft kiss, without straining his body.
Yoongi links their legs together, and makes the kiss a lot less soft.
Jimin’s lips lift up into a small as he breaks the kiss, nudging Yoongi’s nose with his own. “You smell good,” the wolf murmurs, inhaling softly to prove his point.
“I always smell good,” Yoongi retorts with, grinning against the male’s lips.
“You really do,” Jimin’s voice drops a little, allowing more of the wolf’s deeper, lazy, drawl-like accent to come out.
Yoongi may have developed a thing for Jimin’s wild accent.
Just a slight thing from their late-night calls to each other where it comes out more noticeably.
“Dunno if I’ve ever shared with you that you sound hot whenever you stop biting back your accent,” Yoongi hums out fondly, as he lightly rubs the inside of his wrist along the material of Jimin’s blue cotton shirt, scent marking him, and causing Jimin’s nose to flare slightly as he kisses Yoongi again.
Yoongi feels a tentative hand run along the bare skin of his shoulder blade before it skitters away.
Yoongi breaks the kiss to redirect Jimin’s hand to the flushed skin of his spine as he curls his leg over the wolf’s hip to bring him closer.
“You can touch,” Yoongi softly assures the wolf as he lightly nips at Jimin’s parted lips.
“I shouldn’t, we’ve both been drinking,” Jimin says, even as his fingertips lightly press into the skin of his back.
Yoongi pauses nipping at the wolf’s lower lip. “You want to stop?”
Jimin lets out a soft exhale as he nods. “Yeah. I don’t….I feel like I’m taking advantage.”
Yoongi backs off, and goes to uncurl his leg from over the wolf’s hip but is stopped by the Jimin’s hand.
“No, I don’t mind cuddling, just…nothing more, not tonight,” Jimin whispers reassuringly, nuzzling Yoongi’s jaw with his nose and cheek.
Yoongi nuzzles the male back. “Got it. Snuggles only.”
“Snuggles only,” Jimin echoes fondly.
Yoongi swallows back a yawn, making Jimin giggle as he sags more into the wolf’s nest.
“Go to sleep, old man. You’ve had a long day,” Jimin teases affectionately, curling his arm around Yoongi so that they’re nice and snug.
“You’re lucky you’re cute, no other wolf would still be breathing if they called me old.”
“I know, it’s why I use it all the time.”
Yoongi rolls his eyes at the smug expression on the wolf’s face, and shuts his eyes.
“Night, babe,” Yoongi sighs out, much too comfortable not to brush his teeth or anything else other than fall asleep in Jimin’s arms.
He feels a light nuzzle against his nose.
“Sleep well, babe,” he hears Jimin whisper back, tone achingly soft, it makes Yoongi’s chest thump with it.
He was supposed to tell Jimin something tonight.
Wasn’t he?
Yoongi jerks awake with a bursting bladder, an alpha clinging to his back, and drool slightly against his nape.
But, Yoongi doesn’t mind the latter, the former very much needs to be taken care of.
After managing to wriggle himself free from Jimin’s koala wrap, Yoongi relieves his bladder, brushes his teeth, and squints at his reflection as he tries to tame the bird’s nest that is his hair.
Quietly entering the bedding area, and seeing that Jimin is still passed out, Yoongi searches for his phone that he left inside his backpack yesterday before they left for the Mating Ceremony.
And freezes when he sees the white folder paper inside.
He forgot.
He fucking forgot to tell Jimin that he’s moving to Gutenvell in a week’s time.
“Shit,” Yoongi hisses, and almost jumps out of his skin when he hears a, “what’s wrong?” come from the bed.
Yoongi’s head snaps up just as Jimin forces himself to sit up, blinking hard to wake up as he yawns, squinting over at where Yoongi is sitting on the floor beside his suitcase and backpack.
“What’s wrong?” Jimin repeats himself, face puffy, wavy black hair a mess.
Yoongi’s heart aches at the adorable sight.
And then it races with nerves.
Since nothing so far has gone according to plan, he may as well just come out with it.
“I’m moving to Gutenvell next weekend.”
“I’m moving to Gutenvell next weekend.”
Jimin shakes his head, tries to wake up faster, because he could’ve sworn his boyfriend said something that doesn’t make sense.
“Say that again,” Jimin asks as he rubs his eyes and face, forcing blood to his brain to help achieve coherence.
He hears a soft rustle, the sound of paper unfolding, and then, “I’m moving to Gutenvell next weekend.”
Jimin freezes as he hears the same thing again.
And then peeks through his fingers at the omega that is holding out a stapled form to him.
Jimin drags his ass off his bed, onto the floor, and takes the papers from his boyfriend.
If he was confused before, he’s even more confused as he stares down at the title of the form that reads:
Proof of Residency
Jimin snaps his stunned gaze at Yoongi and blurts out, “what?”
Yoongi immediately shuffles close to him, gaze anxious and nervous, as he gently grabs Jimin’s hands that are fisting the paper.
“I got a job here, at the visiting centre, and it comes with rented accommodation in the Pack Velli,” Yoongi rushes out, brown and green eyes frantic as Jimin’s jaw drops open. “I applied for the job on a whim, I didn’t think I’d actually get it.”
“But…you have a job,” Jimin stupidly states, feeling slow.
“I do, but I finally felt that it was time to let it go. My heart wasn’t in it anymore, no matter how hard I try it to be. I want a change, and seeing the job listing for here….it made sense for me to try out for it since I already know the island, and have connections here,” Yoongi explains calmly, soothing himself and Jimin at his change of tone.
“You….when did this even happen?” Jimin wheezes out, still completely stunned by the news that his boyfriend not only decided to uproot his entire life to move to Gutenvell for a new job, but he did so without any hint of it coming through their calls and text messages to each other.
“Two weeks ago?” Yoongi says tentatively, and rushes on at Jimin’s wide-eyed gaze. “No one knew a thing about it. No one. I…I didn’t even know what I was doing. It was all very spontaneous; I don’t recommend ever doing this, the stress will cause you premature aging.”
Jimin can’t help but snort back a laugh at the ending remark.
He looks back down at the paper in his hands, at seeing the stamp that marks it official, and the signatures on it too.
“You’re really moving here?” Jimin says in a quiet voice, his heart pausing as it waits too, despite the proof in his hands, he needs to hear it again.
He feels a finger gently lift up his face, and he meets the warm gaze of his boyfriend.
“I’m really moving here, Jimin,” Yoongi confirms in a tender whisper. “I’m going to be up the road from you, starting this time next week.”
Jimin sucks in slow, harsh, inhale as his heart ricochets around his chest, and his vision turns blurry.
He hears Yoongi moves, scents his boyfriend tug him against his body, cradling Jimin.
“These better be happy tears,” he hears Yoongi gently tease as Jimin clings to his boyfriend’s body, wrapping his arms around the wolf’s back as he buries his face close to Yoongi’s scent gland.
“They’re tears of disbelief, but I am happy too,” Jimin chokes out as he feels them run down his cheeks and onto the bare skin of Yoongi’s shoulder and neck.
“Why disbelief?” Yoongi questions in a soft hum.
“Because a part of me has been waiting to wake up and realise this has all been a dream.”
Yoongi stiffens at his reply, and Jimin swallows thickly through the vulnerability he’s letting Yoongi see.
He feels a hand cup the back of his nape, lightly squeezing, as Yoongi tightens his arm around Jimin.
“This isn’t a dream, babe. This is real, our bond is real. It’s time you fully start allowing yourself to take it, be greedy with it,” Yoongi whispers thickly, tone firm.
Jimin pulls back and meets Yoongi’s serious gaze, and cradles his boyfriend’s face with his hands.
“Be greedy with me, Jimin. I’m yours, and you’re mine, the sun and moon saw to that,” Yoongi murmurs, tucking hair behind Jimin’s ears.
Something deep inside Jimin just….lets go at hearing that.
The part that he locked away at such a young age, tightly protected and buried deep within him so that no one can take it from him, he feels those tightly wrapped chains let go, allowing him to breathe easier, to feel the full extent of his longing and adoration for the wolf he’s cradling with his hands.
From such a young age, Jimin was told he’d be alone, unmated, unloved.
And yet, here he sits, not alone, bonded to a wolf that he knows will be his future mate, and loved.
Yoongi’s throat makes a soft, comforting, sound as he thumbs away Jimin’s silent tears.
“It’s time for you to break a cycle of your own,” Yoongi whispers as he wipes away Jimin’s tears.
“It’s time that you believe that you’re worthy of being loved, Jimin, and I’ll be right here helping you in building that confidence, just like how you have been with my own.”
Jimin crumbles at the vow-like tone to his boyfriend’s words, clutching tightly at the one wolf that broke down all of his walls so that he can help rebuild Jimin with a healthier mindset towards himself.
Yoongi is right.
It’s for Jimin to break away from his past, to stop allowing it to control of he views himself.
It’s time for growth.
It’s time to heal.
“Watch me get lost as soon as I leave my den,” Yoongi says as he walks back into the living area of the cabin that they’re in.
Jimin smirks at his boyfriend, because it’s a very likely thing to happen, as he wanders around the single-living cabin, checking out the corner where the kitchen lies, fully stocked with a decent sized fridge, cooker, and adequate counter space with a deep sink too.
“Do you want me to mark the trees?” Jimin teases as he moves from the kitchen area, through the living area, to where Yoongi had just come from dumping his suitcases in the room that is the bedding area.
“Tempted, ask me in a few hours,” Yoongi retorts back with as he follows after Jimin, leaning against the doorway as he watches Jimin pull back the freshly washed curtain to see how big the bed is.
“The bathroom is right there for you to state your territory,” Yoongi taunts playfully, highly amused at how Jimin is unable to stop how…loud his scent is at the moment as he heads for the door that does indeed lead into a bathroom that has a tub, toilet, and counter space area for the sink.
His instinct as an alpha will settle once he makes sure that Yoongi’s new den is safe and secure, despite knowing that the Velli pack are nothing but warm and friendly, his instinct still needs to be sated because it’s Yoongi.
“I’m stating nothing, I’m just jealous at all of this space you have,” Jimin sniffs as he closes the door behind him.
“Ah ha,” Yoongi drawls, not believing him, as he smirks knowingly. “At least I like sharing, so you’ll have plenty of space to roam here.”
Jimin wraps his arms around the omega’s waist, inhaling cedarwood deeply into his chest as he makes a low hum in the back of his throat.
“Boyfriend approved?” Yoongi murmurs, wrapping his arms around Jimin’s neck.
“It’s been cleaned well, I can’t smell the other wolf,” Jimin answers with instead with a soft smile, making Yoongi snort.
“Well, time to earn your keep – you have to help me unpack since Taehyung and Jungkook are still away on their mating moon, and Jin is still busy making sure that Namjoon and Hoseok suffer by cleaning every inch of your pack grounds in punishment for stinking up the office.”
“It’s pack rule – don’t fuck in the communal area, and they both stuck a middle finger up at it and fucked in the office,” Jimin giggles, still amused from last weekend’s events after the Mating Ceremony finished.
Not only did Jin get the surprise of his life in smelling that when he went to clean the kitchen from the night’s festivities, but also when Yoongi broke the news to all three of them.
Yoongi’s news had muted Jin’s reaction to the sex scent lingering from the office and the two wolves layered with it, but once Yoongi’s news waned after his departure, Jimin couldn’t stop giggling through the phone as he gave Yoongi a running commentary of Jin chewing out Hoseok and Namjoon for fucking in a communal area.
“It still amazes me that even though Hoseok is the High Alpha, Jin is the one in charge,” Yoongi chuckles.
“Jin is just mouthier compared to Hoseok. Hoseok can be terrifying when he needs to be.”
While the alpha is the most chill High Jimin has ever met, Hoseok isn’t afraid to put his foot firmly down when need be.
So, while any other High would’ve taken offence at the way Jin was reacting to Hoseok and Namjoon having sex in the office, Hoseok and Namjoon took the scolding with genuineness, even if it was slightly layered with teasing remarks of how this is something Jin played a part in happening which had helped make the entire scene more comical than serious as all three feed in to the pack’s natural dynamic of bickering and playing with each other through teasing remarks.
Yoongi looks past the Jimin to stare at the suitcases waiting for them to unpack, and pulls a face, making Jimin laugh.
“Come on,” Jimin says, tugging for Yoongi to follow him to the cases.
“I’d rather not,” Yoongi grunts, stubborn.
“The first wolf to pack away a suitcase doesn’t have to lift that monstrosity from the trailer that is supposed to be a storage shelf,” Jimin bets, and Yoongi immediately dives for a suitcase that probably has barely anything in it.
Jimin tries to fight him for it, and loses.
“You’re lucky that you’re cute,” Jimin sniffs playfully as they work together to put away Yoongi’s clothes into the grand-looking wardrobe that is definitely handmade, Jimin can’t stop appreciating it.
“Right back at you,” Yoongi says with a smug grin, hitting Jimin’s rear with a pair of jeans, and causing Jimin to fondly roll his eyes at the wolf.
Now that Yoongi is here, on Gutenvell, Jimin is excited for how the future will go for not just them as a couple, but how the wolf will respond to island-living.
He’s done living in the past, allowing it to restrict his present.
For once in his life, Jimin anticipates what the future has to bring his way.
“Oh yeah, this reminds me,” Yoongi suddenly says, drawing Jimin’s attention to where the wolf is raking through a blue folder.
Jimin abandons the suitcase he was unpacking as Yoongi comes over to him with the folder.
“What is it?” Jimin questions as Yoongi hands him the entire thing.
Yoongi’s smile is gentle, his gaze supportive, and it takes Jimin a moment to hear what the wolf tells him.
“It’s about your brother, Jinho.”
As soon as those words stick in his brain, Jimin is yanking open the folder, eyes desperate as he scans the first document.
And feels his knees go weak as he slowly sinks to the floor with Yoongi’s hands guiding him by their grip on his elbows.
“He…got away,” Jimin wheezes out as he reads the document with fast blurring eyes.
“He did. A change of High happened six years ago due to a sudden heart attack that killed your old High. The High Beta that was voted in, turned his back on the pack system, and summoned in every Monitor near your birth pack area to arrest the alphas that have been abusing their mates,” Yoongi summaries clearly for him as Jimin sobs from relief.
“From what I could find, Jinho left your birth pack a year later, and drifted from social packs,” Yoongi continues, and Jimin’s chest aches at how similar he and his little brother lived after leaving the birth pack.
Jimin flips the page over to read the one underneath, and freezes as Yoongi continues.
“It took me awhile to find him after that, but I did. Your brother mated again,” Yoongi says softly as Jimin stares at the word. “He married a human.”
“And he’s living in a city, not that far away from the wild region we were born in,” Jimin whispers as he reads the address.
“He visits the birth pack, there is a form there that shows him being present at the time of the visit, and his explanation why,” Yoongi prompts, and Jimin flips to the next page.
Jimin sucks in a sharp inhale, and snaps his gaze up at Yoongi in shock.
“I’m an uncle?” Jimin wobbles out, gaze blurring once more as tears pour again down his cheeks.
Yoongi gently shushes him as he pulls him into a soft hug.
“You’re an uncle to a niece and a nephew, both under the age of five,” Yoongi reveals softly, and Jimin clutches at his boyfriend as fresh sobs break from him.
He’s an uncle.
Jinho not only managed to escape an abusive relationship, but he was able to move on, to fall in love with a human, and to have pups of his own.
“This is his most recent up-to-date information. He’s still at the same address,” Yoongi tells him as he flips to the page in question, and Jimin wipes his face clean so he can look down at the contact information.
“Thank you, you…I don’t think you’ll ever know how much this means to me, Yoongi,” Jimin thickly says as he meets Yoongi’s understanding gaze.
“I told you that I’d help you, I’m just glad that I was able to give you a happy ending, instead of a bad one,” Yoongi says softly with a small smile.
Jimin looks back at the documents, notices a lingering one and pulls it free.
His breath catches in his throat as he sees his own name staring up at him.
Based upon new founding’s related to case #BH9867L, the following request has been approved.
From here on in, the wolf named: Park Jimin,
Social Security Number: 945663832894W,
is no longer classified as a Banished Civilian, but as a Standard Civilian.
Change of Status: Approved
“Your birth pack caused quite a stir down in the region when the Monitors were brought in and the abuse was reported, so it was easy for me to submit my own evidence of a wolf that was unlawfully banished, a wolf that is related to one of the victims. A perk of being a Monitor was being able to stick my nose into places like that,” Yoongi says lightly with a playful shrug as Jimin stares at him.
“I…I literally can’t think,” Jimin blurts out, feeling too raw, too overwhelmed.
“You don’t need to thank me or anything, Jimin. It was my job to report correct data, after all.”
Jimin swallows thickly, and wraps his arms around his boyfriend, the folder falling off his lap, as Yoongi embraces him back.
“I’ll never forget this, Yoongi. Never,” Jimin whispers, close to crying again, and Yoongi kisses his temple, his hold grounding Jimin from losing himself completely to his raw emotions.
“Let it all out, remove the mental pulp,” Yoongi whispers soothingly, bringing back Jimin’s own supporting words from when things were so new and fresh between them, a time where Jimin was the one consoling and supporting Yoongi.
Jimin laughs at the reminder, fondness squeezing tightly around the love he has for the wolf.
Jimin is even more excited and nervous for what the future holds.
Maybe, one day, he’ll be able to meet Jinho, to reconnect, to bond again as brothers.
The future is wide open now.
Jimin just needs to go exploring.
Yoongi hears that announcement three times a day, he can recite it in his sleep now that he’s been living here for two months.
A solid eight, whole, weeks.
Yoongi smiles as he breathes in the sea air, leaning on the stone wall outside of the visiting centre, his usual cup of matcha latte from the café in hand, as he watches the port go about its daily routine of hustle and bustle.
The weather is crisper now that fall is slowing giving way to the pulls of winter, meaning that the sea breeze is a lot bittier now, causing for thicker layers, as the gusts of wind build throughout the day.
Adjusting to living on an island has gone a lot smoother than Yoongi originally gave himself credit for.
He’s a lot more active now, his car only being used to drive him to the port or to the support pack, because he has frequent shifts with the guys, learning more of the island’s running trails, learning more of its calm, serene, beauty that still takes his breath aback.
Yoongi’s neighbours helped him learn the pack grounds, help integrated him into the birth pack by never making him feel like the outsider he technically is.
It also helped that his Zentt bonds with Jin and Hoseok spread through the birth pack like wild fire, further making wolves – especially of the older generation – fuss over Yoongi whenever he was at the local pack shop, or in the canteen sharing a meal with the pack members.
Yoongi watches as the bodies from the docked ferry slowly enter the port, looks of awe and curiosity on those that have never visited the island before, and some looks of familiarity as they go about their business to the stores in the port.
Yoongi straightens, and heads back inside, his break nearing its end.
His job is a lot slower compared to when he used to be a Data Collector or a Monitor, but Yoongi likes that he doesn’t have to travel so much, that - for the first time in his life - he can actually start planting roots down, settling in one place without having to leave it for weeks at a time.
He’s become used to seeing familiar faces, learning names instead of just mindlessly forgetting them due to the sheer volume his workload had been in the past as a governmental worker.
Yoongi likes the disconnect from the mainland, considering the rising tensions from wild regions demanding independence, a governmental body of their own.
For once, Yoongi prefers to be a bystander than stuck in the middle, learning too much, feeling lost amongst the tide of problems far bigger than his working position.
The island communities are doing the same thing he is – watching both sides, and sighing because city wolves and wild wolves share one common trait that is preventing peace to succeed.
Stubbornness.
Whereas, here, on the islands, Yoongi has learnt that life is treated equally, and if you see a neighbour in need, you offer help because you see the other as an equal, and not because they are above or below you.
Island-living is amical. It’s not rigid with pack structures of rank and stereotypes, it’s not cagey with wolves struggling to figure out if they should follow a human style of living or not.
It’s free-flowing.
Yoongi read something a few weeks back, when he and Jimin were in his bed, in his cabin, both reading their own books as they lie together, something that stuck in his mind even more so due to the drama going on the mainland.
It was an extract of how wolf society has evolved, and how it needs to continue to evolve if humans and wolves can successfully live together, just like how the other countries around Dretna has succeeded in doing, despite them being smaller pieces of land.
It read:
In the name of Lura, our blessed teacher, we wolves can live.
All is blessed by the divine sun and moon, all share life, the space to coexist, a space known as Dretna, the home of wolf culture, a country that sits in the middle of a split world.
But, the sun and moon no longer parent the world, letting life dictate its course. The divine history of sun birthing life, and the moon elevating life, these stories of legends and old, they have become chains that bind tightly into rigid stereotypes for wolf kind. Chains that never once become lax, always rigid, stubborn, like the ones that cling to them. Now, a hundred years into a peaceful treaty of cohabitation with those called human kind and wolf kind, Dretna has become stagnant with no change.
The sun and moon bore the start, but now it’s up to humans and wolves to figure out the end together. An end that should be free from chains, both from humans and fellow wolves.
In order to make this future happen, to continue what our history has afforded us to have, we need to break chains, the cycles of repeated mistakes we continue to make as we all vie to find a way to live in peace.
In order to evolve, we must allow each other to grow, including ourselves.
That last part stuck with Yoongi so much, because this entire year of his life has been about him growing, healing from an unpleasant situation, and moving onwards outside the comfort zone his life had been back in the capital.
And he’s not the only one that has gone through a growth.
Taehyung and Jungkook’s relationship grew as they become mates.
Namjoon and Hoseok’s friendship grew into a relationship that shows no signs in being a mistake for the pair, much to the absolute smugness and joy of Jin who has been encouraging them years to get together.
And Jimin….his boyfriend has bloomed these last couple of months.
The alpha finally grew to believe his own worth, and he’s blossomed in such a way that it’s not just Yoongi that has noticed, but their pack has as well.
Jimin is much more comfortable in his skin, in sharing his love freely with his pack, and in accepting that love in return.
Sure, they both have their moments when old cycles try to snap back around them, but they both have nailed down their new routine of self-care and soothing whenever Yoongi has a rough night from a nightmare, or when Jimin feels the urge to restrict himself from affection and confidence as he second guesses his job, his place in their pack, and his bond with Yoongi.
It’s still a process, after all.
Healing, growing, letting yourself break habits and create healthier ones, and overcoming the bumps that try to push you back into those habits.
It’s all a process, with no quick fix.
Yoongi has learnt that now, now more than ever.
The wolf he was when he first came to Gutenvell was so tightly constricted to him defying how others saw him and his rank, of how he just wanted to push through his trauma without fully letting himself learn how to heal and move forwards so that he could continue living the monotonous grind of how he was living his life, to the wolf he is now that is much more relaxed, and isn’t afraid of showing his instincts and impulses.
It’s been a process, and not a fast one either.
Just like how the current politics on the mainland is a process, and not a quick fix.
Change takes time.
And now that Yoongi is living a much calmer pace of life, he’s got all the time in the world to truly appreciate his much slower way of living.
Especially now that he and Jimin are planning their future Mating Ceremony.
Yoongi takes one last sip from his cup before he places it on the desk where his computer is stationed, sitting himself on his chair as he waits for the visitors to the port to stroll on in.
They’re taking a page from Jungkook and Taehyung’s book of planning everything out first, and then triggering the bonding instinct, because they all saw how scatter-brained those two were during the two weeks before their ceremony.
Jimin and Yoongi, they know that they’re going to mate in the future, so they both saw no reason not to plan for it now, rather than later.
Smiling to himself, he recalls their latest development in their plans from their conversation last night in Jimin’s den.
Yoongi rubs at his chest over the material of his sweater, at the faint line of scars he still carries from his assault as Jimin flicks fast through the book on his lap.
“I don’t mind the knife,” Yoongi repeats himself, touched that his boyfriend is adamant in trying to find another alternative to scarring each other without the use of a blade.
“There’ll be another method, I just have to find it,” Jimin waves off, still not giving up.
“If blades bothered me, I wouldn’t shave,” Yoongi gently jokes, trying to reassure the wolf that he really doesn’t mind having a knife cut into his body again because it’s not in the same manner his scars were made in.
His scars were born from loss of control and misdirected hate.
His bonding scar will be born from love.
They’re both very different.
“It doesn’t hurt to at least look for a non-traditional means,” Jimin reassures, smiling at Yoongi.
Yoongi can’t argue that, even if he knows the origin of the thought anyway.
“We may as well have that as the overall theme – non-traditional,” Yoongi huffs as he drags the pad of paper to him, smiling down at their attempts of deciding on a mating scar.
“Have everyone wear white and we wear the colour?” Jimin huffs back with a soft laugh, before shutting the book he had been looking through with a twist of his lips as he looks through the next few books the male had brought from the office.
“Have the same meaningful vows, keep it simple.”
“All you have to do is bite me, and I’m yours for life,” Jimin says, testing it out, and Yoongi’s gut responds with a ripple of anticipation for the day they do just that.
“Romantic,” Yoongi teases.
“But very meaningful,” Jimin teases back, giving up on his books for now to crawl over to where Yoongi is sitting with his back against the sofa, legs stretched out on the floor, and sits next to Yoongi.
“We just need to decide what style of mark we want,” Jimin says as he flicks through their pages of attempts to finding a design they like on their skin for the rest of their lives.
“And where,” Yoongi adds with a hum. “If we go traditional, it’ll be the neck or inner wrist.”
“I’m all for flaunting you off, but I’m not sure how I feel about something so meaningful to us be just out there, for all to see,” Jimin admits in a soft tone, taking the pencil from Yoongi as he begins to sketch another idea.
They’ve learnt through doing this that Jimin is the artist out of the two of them.
“We’re still in the early stages, we have plenty of time to decide,” Yoongi assures softly, resting the side of his head against the male’s, watching the wolf idly sketch.
“Plenty of time for you to change your mind,” Jimin assures back, even as he lays a soft kiss to Yoongi’s hair, still sketching.
Yoongi gently grabs the wolf’s wrist that’s not moving and brings it up to his lips to kiss over the male’s scent gland there, marking him, as Jimin’s sketching hand pauses as he lays another kiss to the crown of Yoongi’s head.
“All you have to do is bite me and I’m yours for life,” Yoongi repeats the wolf’s words against the male’s warm skin, nuzzling with his nose, before he presses their wrists together, small scent glands connecting, mixing their scent more firmly than a kiss does.
Jimin links their fingers together, keeping their wrists pressed together, a heavy exhale leaving him as he nuzzles Yoongi’s hair.
“Right back at you, babe.”
Yoongi gently sniffs at his wrist, still catching a faint scent of peony musk, before he straightens in his chair as the automatic doors slide open.
Life on Gutenvell Island is a lot slower, yes.
But, there is nothing wrong with taking the slow lane in life.
You’ll still reach your destination in the end.
Yoongi smiles at the elderly couple heading his way, and stands up.
“Hello, welcome to Gutenvell, may I ask the reason for your visit today?”
