Sports festival as seen from Canada

Summary:

The UA Sports Festival is aired internationally so how do others react to it. Specifically, the first-year class of Northern High get to watch to see if there’s anything to learn, what do they learn? Your quirk isn’t always needed.

“That’s a fucking statement.”

“Did he just win the obstacle course without any gear?”

“Oh come on!”

“The fuck?”

Work Text:

Keith Richards was not looking forward to today. His class had been told they were in for a surprise which was never a good thing, not with Frost Wave as a teacher. Of course, it was worse than he thought it’d be, he forgot his coat at school the day before and the bus got snowed in. Fucking winter.

“Sometimes I hate how much I love this country.” Keith hated the cold, which was unfortunate. Keith could only hope this wouldn’t be too bad.

“Hey, Keith!” That would be Thalia, the resident electromagnet, “We’re watching the UA sports festival from Japan.”

“Are you kidding?” Keith stared at his friend in shock, “That’s the surprise Frost Wave was talking about, no laps through the blizzard, no obstacle course over a fire, none of that?”

“No man, still terrified outta my fucking mind though,” That’d be good old Jackson, “He never gives something simple without a catch.”

“We are in Canada, not like we’ll ever have to work with the heroes from down there,”  That would be Nico. In a short while, all but one of the sixteen members of the heroics class were sitting at their desks awaiting the start of the festival. The sound was muted, for the most part, a translator was needed. Midnight gave her opening speech and called up the class representative up. A green-haired kid that probably looked rather plain in Japan.

“Wow, I can hardly believe it, I’m up here. The loser, the wimp, the one that stands no chance beating out everyone else for the top, why don’t we see if I can keep the streak?” There was scattered laughter at his joking tone, “Anyone else in heroics should be up here, their all better than me but I did score first on the entrance exam. Oh, that reminds me, one other thing you need to know, I’m quirkless so by our own standards no one who loses to me deserves to be in heroics right? Wrong, I’m going to win but let’s enjoy the race for the second shall we?”

“That’s some confidence right there,” Keith had to admire someone that confident in their abilities. Jackson scoffed at that.

“Wrong, that’s a fucking statement,” Jackson leaned forward, “He’s looking for a challenge, so he’s painting a target on his back and yelling ’COME GET ME’, the worst part? It worked.”

Keith looked back at the screen just in time to catch the looks on the faces of a few students. The students weren’t happy, the group that this Midorya came from though looked like he was a goal, something to strive to. This Class 1-A was something to watch.

“Oh god, he’s going to destroy them isn’t he?” Thalia, despite her kind attitude, was the most violent and aggressive person in the class, “This’ll be fun.”

Her tone, as it usually did, sent shivers down Keith’s spine. No one should be that terrifying, at least not casually. This kid in Japan wasn’t something to underestimate, too bad his class was the only one that wouldn’t. The first event was an obstacle course. Keith kept his eye on the gree haired kid.

“The hells he doing?” Keith watched Midoriya as he snagged a panel of armour from the giant robots. He had an idea but Keith couldn’t figure out what. UA was crazy, giant robots, massive pitfalls, is that a fucking minefield?

“No fucking way,” Jackson has never looked more in awe than at that moment as he watched the quirkless member of 1-A work. Thalia giggled, her giggle slowly transitioned into a full-on cackle as more and more mines were placed in the small hole that had been dug. There was a bang as the kid jumped onto the pile.

“Holy shit,” None of the students could believe what they were seeing. Midoriya had used the mines to launch himself past the competition and won the race. No one in the class could believe it, the quirkless teen had beat out people with quirks almost tailored to this kind of thing.

“Did he just win the obstacle course without any gear?” Keith heard Rick mutter behind him. Keith had to agree though, what the fuck. The cavalry battle started and it was clear from the start the quirkless kid's team would be almost unstoppable. The Quirkless kid was the rider while a support course kid, a brown-haired classmate of Midoriya and a guy with a bird head made up the horse.

“Oh come on!” The bicolour haired kid had for some reason made the choice to not use his fire after activating his quirk. One of the classes early lessons was about quirk use and how as hero’s they didn't have the option of not using part of them. To not use your quirk was to needlessly endanger innocent people. Keith didn’t know what was going on with the kid so he’d stay out of it. UA usually lacked a class 1-A so either their standards had dropped or the kid was having issues.

“Hey, Keith you're the resident quirk expert, what do you think’s up with that kid?” Keith was by no means the quirk expert of the group, that’d actually be Thalia. Keith just happened to spend enough time around the girl to pick up on it and the class just happened to be terrified of her.

“I don’t really know Jace, could be past trauma, issues with her parents, hell it could just be that she doesn’t like fire.” Thalia snorted at that, she knew something. The class turned to her as one, each of them wanting to know the story.

“Alright, so you guys know my father is Pulse right? Well, we had a thing In japan years ago, meet the kid, her father had a fire quirk and seemed genuinely surprised to find out I wasn’t trained into the ground as soon as my quirk popped up.” Thalia leaned back in her chair, both front legs lifting, “Kids got serious daddy issues.”

“Trained into the ground? At what four, the fuck?” Jackson was protective of kids if Keith recalled correctly, something about being a late bloomer with his quirk. Keith was on Jackson’s side with this one, which to be honest he usually was. The door slammed open and their last classmate ran in, late as per usual.

“Oh god it isn’t a swimming contest through acid again is it?” The only recommendation student to get in was bent over and panting as she made her way into the room, “Cause we all know I can barely swim and- Oh… The sports festival, right that’s a thing.”

“Seriously Casie, you know what the school board said last time he dropped us in acid.” most of the class laughed at Rick. Nico decided to step up and actually mimic the board.

“Ah, um F-frost W-wave would you maybe consider probably, maybe not using acid for training? It’s just the parents worry sometimes…” It was nearly perfect, the right tone, stutters in place and the wince every third word was just right. The class absolutely loved it when Nico did these things.

“Guys the tournament is starting!” The first set of matches were rather dull, the only standouts were the purple-haired boy with some kind of mind control, the pink-haired girl turning it into an ad and Midoriya’s fights, each one showcased something different about his gear. In one he showed off his standard weapon, a quarterstaff that could be split into a pair of batons with tasers so stole that from Nightwing. Another had him using various grenades and a third showcased a deployable exo-suite.

“Is there anything he can’t do?” Kristan was usually rather quiet, it had something to do with her quirk. She had a point, the kid had pulled so many tricks out of his sleeve that anything wasn’t truly out of the realm of possibility. The finals of the tournament were between Midoriya and Todoroki. Midoriya had spent most of it toying with Todoroki, he had many opportunities to end it and he used none of them. Keith wasn’t sure why or at least he wasn’t until Todoroki’s left side lit with fire. A pair of disk pulled from Midoriya’s backpack and launched up.

“What’s he planning?” Jace was leaning forward, his interest had clearly peeked. A blast of flame surged forward and caused a massive explosion in the arena. Thalia’s manic grin spread further as the dust cleared and Midoriya hadn’t moved. Once the dust settled a series of explosions rocked the field.

“The fuck?” Jackson looked as confused as Keith felt while the rest of the class looked on in shock.

“That little bastard just carpet-bombed the field!” Thalia was roaring with gleeful laughter as she watched the devastation. Keith watched as Todoroki was forced out of the arena and came in second place.

“Now kids time for the real surprise!” Frost Wave had entered the room, “Obstacle course over flaming acid outside!”
