Chapter 58: Cocktail for Trouble

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

The Mayor was torn and confused.

His wife and his Food Soul were arguing again.

**

"...and so I came to you, in hopes of getting some advice." The Mayor, sitting opposite Master Attendant, seemed shaken.

She hummed, seemingly thinking.

"I have an idea," she said, "but here's what I want you to do while I get it going…"

The Mayor dutifully did as she said.

**

Mojito and Steak sparred.

"I don't know why she- ugh- has it out for me!" Steak disarmed Mojito with ease, and huffed.

"She doesn't." Steak shook his head. "If she wanted to hurt you, she'd use her hands."

"Then what's going on?"

"She's- look, maybe observe what happens before she gripes at you. Might be something in common. "

**

With a huff, Master Attendant put her gathered materials on the table in front of Black Tea. It had taken her a week of scrabbling to do it.

"Master Attendant, I still am not sure what these would have to do with the Mayoress' concerns."

"She's concerned about the bond between her husband and his Food Soul, and is jealous." Black Tea suddenly understood.

"You wish me to persuade her to use them."

"Sometimes, humans find it impossible to understand something unless they've experienced it." Master Attendant shook her head. "The bond between an Attendant and their Food Soul, especially so."

**

The Mayor waited nervously outside the room with Mojito and Steak.

"Hey, Steak, do you really think this will work?" Steak let out a harrumph.

"Depends. But I trust my Master Attendant."

There was a powerful wave of energy billowing from the door, an indication of a successful summon.

Master Attendant came sauntering out a few minutes later, with a grin on her face. She turned to the Mayor and Mojito, and gave a thumbs up.

"Don't be too harsh on her, now."

**

"You know," Dornes said, "they're actually doing better now they both have Food Souls."

"Yeah. Of course, it also helped that she summoned a Rum."

"Oh." Master Attendant laughed.

"Yeah. Turns out the fact he summoned a Food Soul really threw off their marriage because of the bond. And their power dynamics, because of Mojito's personality and skills."

"Huh. And now her Food Soul is more powerful and connected to his… I guess it evens it out."

"More so than before. Now it's a much stronger marriage." Master Attendant grinned. "Confirmed by the Cafe Gang, and Chocolate's expert eyes." Dornes laughed.

"You're a little shit, Ophelia."

Notes:

There's a lovely reference in this chapter of one of my favourite exchanges.

"Are you trying to kill me?"
"If I wanted to kill you, I'd use my hands."

...from a movie called Fried Green Tomatoes at The Whistle-stop Café.

Notes:

The hardest part about this for me is splitting it up into chapters.

But interludes? Those I can do.
