“It’s 9 am, Yu; get up. I made the kids breakfast already and did the laundry.” Masayuki prodded her shoulder, leaned over her, and cupped her cheek gently after a few pats...and just lingered.
“Mmmff” she mumbled unintelligibly, stretched out her arms and blindly reached up to pull him down awkwardly into a bear hug—and every single darn time, Masayuki wondered why he didn’t dodge.
It wasn’t the most comfortable position either; he had one knee tucked under him, leaning on the edge of the bed and the other dangling over. His elbow was pretty much the only thing that kept him propped up under Yu’s arm as he laid almost diagonally on her. But, by the way she was slowly nuzzling his face, still with her eyes closed, he couldn’t find the strength or will to pull away. A...few minutes couldn’t hurt. The kids were watching television quietly.
As he kept still, feeling her chest rise and fall in a really lulling sort of way, he felt all the energy he had spent that morning melt away and he almost wanted to go back to sleep himself.
But there were a lot of things to get done today and he was no stranger to time creeping up with this little family of his.
Just as he was contemplating that, Aki’s voice broke his tranquil state.
“Papaaa, where are the chocolates uncle Ume brought yesterday?” She asked, strolling into the room with Ren in tow. Clad in patterned pajamas and star shades on her head, it was the look of lazy Saturday mornings when uniforms, punctuation and rousing sleepy children, took a break.
With Yu’s arms still around him and the girls catching him off guard, the only thing that leapt into action was his heart, but thankfully only for a second. He had learned to just let things happen. Mostly.
Without looking back at her again, “it’s 9 am, you can’t have chocolate.”
“But mama said I could have one ‘tomorrow’ and it’s now tomorrow and I ate my breakfast.” She stated but he could tell she was getting a little upset.
“Me toooo,” his three year old chimed in at the edge of their bed, flopping her arms on top. “I want choc-late too!”
Masayuki wiggled out of Yu’s grasp. She sighed displeased but let go.
“Mama, can I have a chocolate?”
“Sure.”
“Yu.”
“...a little later, princess.”
“But that’s really not fair. It’s tomorrow.” She reasoned diplomatically.
Yu rolled over and sat up, tousled hair and crinkled pajamas and all, “the day is still young, princess,” she smoothly drawled, elbows on her knees and cheeks in the palm of her hands.
Aki abandoned diplomacy. “Not fair,” she pouted and Ren repeated her, “not fair, not fair.”
“Why can’t I have chocolate now?” She asked.
“Yeah, why?” Yu whispered to Masayuki.
He resisted the urge to roll his eyes. “Let mama have breakfast first,” he said instead, knowing fully well what was going to happen next.
“Yeah—” Yu began, beginning to agree with him until her sleep fogged mind caught on.
“Mamaa, get up, get up!!”
“Up!! Up!!”
Both girls climbed on the bed faster than she could react and Masayuki couldn’t stifle his laughter entirely.
Yu didn’t have time to shoot him a look before two sets of tiny hands pulled away at the warm blankets and her little princesses both chattered much more animatedly than she looked at that hour.
But she glanced over at their faces right then and smiled.
She drew them both into a hug, and they squirmed a bit, but she managed to nuzzle a kiss onto each of their heads. “Okay, okay, I’m up, I’m up.”
Masayuki considered it a win.
