Work Text:
At five years old, Koyuki Himekawa saw her first magical girl. She was pretty, smart and compassionate, and from that moment on, Koyuki decided that was what she wanted to be.
Being only a small child, everyone she told smiled and said ‘of course, you can be anything!’. With their encouragement, Koyuki let her imagination soar. She imagined her future adventures as a beautiful magical girl, and was content.
The next year, when Koyuki started Elementary school, she was excited to be able to have friends who she could talk to about magical girls, and she found that her expectations were met.
Many other children loved magical girls, and they were all happy to talk to Koyuki about them.
There was one child, however, that Koyuki enjoyed talking to about magical girls more than anyone else.
That child was called Souta Kishibe.
Souta was one of the rare boys who showed an interest in magical girls. Even as they grew up, Souta never called Koyuki childish or immature for still loving and believing in magical girls. Instead he listened to her talk, offered ideas about her magical girl self, Snow White , and let her borrow old magical girl series from her.
Koyuki truly loved the time that she spent with Souta.
However, nothing good can last forever, and as they lived in different catchment areas, the two were forced to go to different middle schools.
Koyuki still thought about Souta sometimes, but whenever she saw him around he was with other boys their age, or playing football. Koyuki was forced to accept that her childhood friend had moved on.
Time passed, and Koyuki’s patience was rewarded when she was chosen by the mascot of the game Magical Girl Raising Project , Fav, to become a real magical girl. As she stood in her bedroom, dressed in her frilly, flowery white magical girl outfit, Koyuki couldn’t help but think of Souta.
Sou-chan , she thought, Look at me! I did it! I really became Snow White .
Still, that thought left a bittersweet feeling behind. Even if she was allowed to tell Souta what had happened to her, she wasn’t sure if he would’ve cared. By now, he probably thought of magical girls as being silly.
That thought was proved wrong atop a steel tower, when a beautiful, regal magical girl looked over to her and said, “I’m Souta Kishibe.”
To say that Koyuki was shocked would be an understatement.
After only one day, however, her surprise faded and she started to become used to La Pucelle.
Regardless of whether her old friend was Souta Kishibe or La Pucelle, Koyuki cared for them.
As she spent time with La Pucelle, Koyuki found her old bond with her returning. She began to enjoy her company more than anything else, and while these feelings were new to her, Koyuki soon recognised it as a crush.
Before she was given the chance to even consider telling La Pucelle about her feelings, Fav revealed that the magical girls of N City would be cut down by half. In a few weeks, half of them would be dead. Koyuki was too afraid to think of the future.
Koyuki still loved Souta, and Snow White still loved La Pucelle, but how could she admit that while death was staring them in the face?
You can’t say you want to spend your future with someone if you have no future.
So Koyuki held her tongue, and if La Pucelle felt anything for her in return, she held her tongue too.
When La Pucelle died, she had no idea how Koyuki felt for her.
Years in the future, that remains one of Koyuki’s deepest regrets.
