They’re lazing in bed, the late morning light coming through their fucked up blinds and painting the room in a soft glow. The house is quiet, the usual chaos already dispersed for the day, and Ian’s staring at his husband so hard he’s pretty sure Mickey can feel it from where he’s fucking around on his phone. Ian’s been doing that a lot lately, just looking at Mickey. Trying really hard to ground himself in the moment, or whatever the fuck the therapist at the clinic told him to do when he gets overwhelmed.

Summary
In the 90s and early 00s, they were distant neighbors on a long, dirt road out in the middle of vaguely Georgia farmland. Ian and Mickey: two poor, closeted Southern kids with similar financial situations but very different families, harboring secret crushes that felt illegal and that manifested themselves as sharp words, punches, and self-loathing.
In 2021, Ian, a high school teacher in need of a fresh start, returns to his childhood home after nearly 20 years to find himself once more sharing a lonely dirt road with Mickey, the boy he once knew and the man he's desperate to get to know.

ch. 13: As they stand outside the Alibi, Ian shrinking into his coat like a turtle retreating into its shell, Mickey feels himself waver. Feels his resolve crumble on the spot, because — fuck. Ian looks exposed, vulnerable, heartbroken. That was never the plan. (OR an 11x12 anniversary party fix-it)
ch. 14: It's been three days of this, and he just wants to be there. But Ian had curled away from his touch for the first time in a long time, so he left. Retreated out to the living room, found their coziest blanket, and grabbed his sketchbook. (OR Ian's low, and Mickey keeps his hands busy.)
ch. 15: Beautiful, Ian had called him, in the heat of their mingled breath. His hands had moved along soft, smooth skin, and he’d called him beautiful. But maybe it was the wrong word to use. The wrong time. The wrong day. (OR some body image hurt/comfort)
