Summary
Right now, Damian is not Robin, and father is not Batman. They're dressed in black suits with gel in their hair and wearing ridiculously colourful ties that Grayson had picked out for them.
Damian is dying, there's no question about it. But as father leans down to place a hand across his pulse, counting the slowly depleting thumps of a heartbeat, his expression horrified, Damian realises he needs to tell his father that Jason Todd is alive. He must.
He absolutely can not die letting Bruce Wayne think he has lost two sons.
(Damian joins the family early, and harbours a secret he almost carries with him to the grave.)

Damian did not sign the letter. But then, he didn’t need to.
For several long moments, Dick stares at the curled handwriting. He has to blink vigorously to keep his vision clear.
Then, carefully, he folds the letter into fourths. He presses it to his chest. It almost feels like a second heartbeat beneath his palm.
I don’t want to go back, Damian had said.
Dick can’t let him stay there.
Or, alternatively, Damian is taken to Nanda Parbat. Dick brings him home.

Damian had been many things in the eight years he had been alive. He had been a trainee - eager for knowledge and advancement, he had been a loyal son to the al Ghul lineage, and he had been a merciless assassin.
He had never been the son of a billionaire warrior.
He did not know what was expected of him when he arrived in Gotham city, not exactly, but he did know that his mother had given him all the tools needed to figure it out. He had his training, his knowledge, and the sword that hung heavily on his waist.

Or, Damian is dropped off (cough, abandoned) by his mother and sent to live with the Batman to continue his training. He thought he had the perfect plan for proving himself worthy of being the one true Robin (defeating Tim Drake), that is, until Grayson forbids dueling and his father refuses to train him.
