Lance McClain is a normal junior at Garrison High School. Ordinary built, average talent, pretty good academic results. Nothing too special. Except his big gay crush for the top celebrity of the school: Keith Kogane.
They're worlds apart, but it's okay. It's not like Lance can have any chance with Keith anyway. A prince is destined to be with a princess, not just some... vague commoner lurking in the dark. He gets it, really.
But it doesn't mean he can't help his crush woo the princess. That's what friends do! All he needs is a white board, a copy of The Great Gatsby (for aesthetics, duh) and a new, non-traitorous heart. Easy peasy lemon squeezy.

“How did you know you were in love with this person?” Lance asks, blurting the question out, almost frantic, face glowing a faint red.
“Oh,” Keith says, frowning, “Uh, I guess…”
Desire is a destruction, a death, a star, snuffed out like the butt of a cigarette. I would die for you, Keith wants to tell him. I need to die for you. Keith doesn’t know what else to do but die for Lance.
“I just… knew, I don’t really know how to describe it,” Keith says, lamely, “I mean, it’s - it’s when someone means the world to you. You - you feel warm.”
“Oh,” Lance says, voice barely a whisper, and Keith can hear the thunderclap of his heart, rattling heavily in his chest.

“I like you,” Lance says in a rush.
Keith blinks.
“That is—” Lance clears his throat, shifting his weight uncomfortably. His hands are still in his pockets, his shoulders still hunched. “I like you—I like-like you. Like, in a more-than-friends-way like you.”
For a long moment Keith can only stare at him, astonishment and disbelief and cautious delight warring for dominance. And then, because he’s an idiot, because he spent a whole goddamn year in a goddamn shack in the middle of the goddamn desert and has no idea how to be a socially competent person, because he’s Keith, he says, “That was a lot of the word ‘like’ in one sentence.”
In which Keith has about a dozen chances at happiness, and sabotages (nearly) all of them.

Another scrap of parchment shot out of the cup, a fourth scrap of parchment, which made no sense at all, and the Headmaster grabbed it from the air, unrolling it and reading it quietly.
The entirety of the Great Hall remained silent. It was as quiet as a tomb.
“Lance Álvarez?” The Headmaster whispered, and then again, louder. “Lance Álvarez.”
Wait, what?
// Lance and Keith have always been battling it out: on the Quidditch field, in the duelling club, for the best marks in Defense Against the Dark Arts, and Keith always manages to come out in the lead.
Now, the Triwizard Tournament has been announced and Lance knows that Keith is going to beat him for the only open spot, even if he pretends that he thinks otherwise. But it doesn’t quite go the way that Lance expects, and everything changes from there.
