Anima are mystical spirits that inhabit young children who have the strong need to survive, the Anima are drawn in by their will to live and enter them granting them the power they withhold inside them, sometimes they are drawn in by the desire to protect either themselves or someone they care about. These children have the characteristics of their Anima, they also have a marking on their body that signifies what type of Anima the are. Though not all Anima transform because of a traumatic event some families pass on their Anima spirits to the younger generation as a tradition. As common as Anima are now they aren't always treated as equals, most Anima keep the fact that they are an Anima a secret as to not complicate things for themselves. No matter how common Anima are they aren't always seen as humans by regular humans, which is exactly why they tend to hide their existence. Of course, nothing can always stay a secret forever.
Nagisa Shiota is an Anima, a crow Anima to be exact. Which means he has the ability to fly using his black wings, while he tries to see the beauty in having these wings he finds it hard to when all people see are the color they are and not the person they're attached to.
