Summary
When Tommy lived in Pogtopia, he swore to himself that he’d never smoke.
The smell of cigarettes stuck to the walls, the fabric of his clothes, the water that became polluted with it. It was like the walls were never originally gray; only made that way by the rolled-up paper that constantly sat in Wilbur’s mouth.
The smoke followed the man like some sort of shadow, even when he put the cigarette out, even after he washed himself off in the river. It stuck to his very skin, making it duller than the once lively soldier that led their rebellion.
Tommy knew, when he stepped out of the ravine and coughed at the fresh air, that there was no room for him to smoke. Wilbur was doing it enough for the two of them.
Tommy swore to himself, after seeing Schlatt maneuver his cigar around just to take a swig of whiskey on his dying breath, that he would never let smoke invade his lungs again.
