The smell of ozone and the smell of cigarette smoke and the smell of a cramped, used bookstore. The people we love, and the people we don’t know, and the people we argue with at two in the morning who end up drinking in different rooms alone.

You kept the chatter up. Vaguely amusing anecdotes, nostalgic recollections, the sorts of things that softened up the edges of John’s temper most of the time. You all had to live with one another for another four months, and if things were going to get worse before they got better, it was as well that you eased what tension you could. You’d just got into your stride, preparing another anecdote behind your teeth, when Gideon exploded.
Granted the soup wasn’t very good, but carrots or no, that seemed an overreaction.
