Summary
At the precipice of losing a war to a king who would see her country decimated, Queen Athena forges an unexpected alliance with a neighbouring country - an alliance that is to be secured through the marriage of Princess May and the crown prince of Porcanta, Prince Thomas. Buck is one of the best knights in Colliva, so it comes as no surprise when he is sent along as May's personal guard for the duration of the trip.
The problem is that May has no intention of marrying Prince Thomas. How, then, can Buck ensure her safe return to Colliva without angering the Porcantan king and risking the start of another war?
---
Athena looked at Buck, her eyebrow raised in a private challenge. ‘Is that so, Sir Evan?’
She’d been hesitant when Buck was first appointed to the Elite Guard. Claimed that he was too brash and irresponsible. Maybe she’d even had a point.
But they knew each other well now. She knew that she could trust him with the life of her children. And she knew that he would never say no to his queen.
So Buck nodded reluctantly. ‘Yes, your Majesty,’ he said, bowing again for good measure.

Summary
Our take on a Tommy Begins episode.
It’s easy. Easier than any other relationship he’s ever had, or tried to have. Thinks Evan feels the same way, because sometimes he catches Evan watching him with a kind of wide-eyed wonder, like he’s not sure he’s allowed to have this. Admits one night, in the safety of bed, and the honesty that comes with the cover of darkness, “I didn’t think it could be like this. I thought it always had to feel like work.”
But it’s not always easy. It can’t be. They both come with baggage (and god fucking damn Rent, because he can never think those words without getting the song stuck in his head for three days after). They've both got hidden tripwires that they stumble across; IEDs buried in the sand waiting to explode.
