‘Four sixteens…’ Mipha mutters. ‘Four fifteens is sixty, then four times… four times six? Four times one?’
‘You shouldn’t listen to your brother, you know.’ Ruta says, peering angrily out from underneath Mipha’s dressing rack.
‘What do you mean?’
‘You should be keeping up with the news. You should be ready to launch into action at any moment.’
‘Did you eavesdrop that from in here with your big ears?’

Mipha - student, classmate, sister, friend, magical girl - has a problem. Well, several, actually. There's the matter of her shambling social life, courtesy of her transition to high school. And her insecurities don't seem to be getting any more managable.
Oh, and the ancient evil terrorising her city that only she can stop... that's a problem too.

‘No…’ Gwen says, though she doesn’t know which part she’s disagreeing with. Alice continues on, unbothered.

Link can’t think about what might happen if it doesn’t work. If they’ve desecrated one of Mipha’s last surviving possessions, one of Link’s last reminders of her. One less thing to lay next to him in bed in a wretched reconstruction of their life before their Calamity. One less thing to worry with his thumb when he gets nervous, when he starts to fear that he might be about to forget again. One less thing to succeed her.
But it will work. It has to. And then Link won’t need a tunic of dead scales. There’ll be the real, live – alive, alive, alive – thing, Mipha restored to warm flesh and cold blood.

With the help of friends, Link makes a plan to revive Mipha. But if it even works... will she come back the same?

Summary
After ten years, Link had just begun to accept that his best friend was gone. She’d been missing for so long, there was no chance of her returning. But then he sees her face, all airbrushed and idealised on the lit up screen of a billboard. Being the sort of person he is, he's not willing to think of it as a coincidence, so he sets out on the first important job he’s ever given himself: Find Mipha, and bring her back home for once and for all.
It doesn’t go as expected.
